In this video. If you watch the game and all the calls, much much different. And Baltimore manager upset with ump’s comments to their dugout. Why are MLB umpires so much less tolerant of "chirping" than NFL or NBA officials?
@BillsFan-nw8nn2 жыл бұрын
NHL officials as well. NBA refs are definitely somewhat less tolerant, but not to the extent of MLB umps.
@VisibilityFoggy2 жыл бұрын
This might sound silly, but I'm wondering if the ambient noise in an NFL stadium or NBA arena drown things out, as opposed to relative quiet on the field during a baseball game in between any dramatic moments.
@teebob212 жыл бұрын
They are extremely tolerant in professional baseball. Tell me you've never umpired a single game without telling me. The amount of F-bombs thrown their way will blow your mind. However, by rule, leaving the dugout to argue balls and strikes is an immediate ejection. Unlike other sports, baseball does not have a penalty for poor conduct such as the penalty box, 15-yard personal foul or a technical foul. The penalty for conduct unbecoming to the game is removal.

Local sports announcer heard what started the issue. He didn’t expand on what happened, but was surprised he was umping 3rd base in the next game. @@alanhess9306 Because the issue wasn't visual it was verbal. Hyde said he thought there was a disrespectful exchange between the ump and his bench and the club is pursuing it "through channels". If it was just the normal heated exchange that would not be happening, so it seems there might have been something said beyond the usual back-and-forth. If you watched the whole game, the strike zone was inconsistent.

I don't think this had anything to do with the pitch call; my guess is that De Jesus got rabbit ears about something and was chirping at the dugout (for whatever reason) and that is what Hyde was upset about. Telling him to stop chirping at his dugout. I didn't see any pitches that the dugout would be upset over; maybe something that happened in an earlier game, or possibly an interaction at the plate during an earlier at-bat etc. I feel that Hyde probably thought De Jesus was instigating some sort of confrontation and he just didn't want his guys getting ejected; so he went out to take the brunt, get ejected and defuse his team.

There definitely may have been chirping from the Orioles dugout, and would be rightfully told to knock it off by the umpire. But who knows what De Jesus actually said to warrant this reaction? Just like when there's quick ejections, the player/coach said something very disrespectful or personally insulting. Based on history with De Jesus, that would not be surprising if he did that, as he's had a couple of similar run-in's previously. Look at his ejection of Chase Utley in 2017 as a prime example.

I've seen ~100 closecallsports videos. This was the worst, and by a wide margin. The latent hostility and condescension is childish & out of place, especially when you have no idea what prompted Hyde's anger. Historically, he is a manager that gets angry when he should (i.e. when his players are getting thrown at or when an ump destroys a game with a consequential terrible call). Please do better with future videos, @CloseCallSports.

If I cared enough I'd look up what the actual cause was, but Lane M's guess is as good as any: de Jesus was staring into the dugout Kulpa-"I can do anything I want"-style, and as with that infamous incident the manager was telling him to watch the game. It's sad enough to allude to but minimize the actual cause (the usual), but it's _really_ sad to pretend there was none. Let alone to betray such obvious bias as to say it's a matter of "How do you like it if we came to *your* job and yelled in your ear". Last I checked... baseball isn't only the umpires' workplace territory and the players aren't customers. They're coworkers (or vendors if you prefer) who usually deserve at least minimal respect... and de Jesus is one of the worst umpires there is for showing obvious contempt on his face. He does it so often that it's even present in this video's version (2:19). I imagine that actually endears him a great deal to some people - but definitely not the people he regularly shows it to.
