1B Umpire Ramon De Jesus ejected Rangers 2B Marcus Semien, pitching coach Mike Maddux, and manager Bruce Bochy for arguing a check swing strike call during the inning break following the strikeout. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2023/...
The Rangers broadcast thought the umpire got the call right and that Semien did strike at Angels pitcher Chris Devenski's 3-2 changeup, while the Angels broadcast thought the umpire got the call wrong and the national broadcast was entirely unsure. There was also a strike one call earlier in the Semien at-bat that could have been balled but no one seemed to remember it.

The problem with this I think is the myth of breaking the wrists/the zone etc. I'd say if you're talking about "striking at the ball" he nearly hit the ball with how close his bat was to it (the first base angle makes it look even closer to hitting the ball than it was). Most check swings aren't that close to touching the ball. This had to be called a strike.
@transcendkira
@transcendkira Жыл бұрын
You're right, he aimed for and struck at the ball almost all the way to it passing by him, is absolutely a reasonable strike call. That's most of what matters in some of these types of calls.
@phobos258
@phobos258 Жыл бұрын
I concur, that was too much of an attempt to hit the ball. But I don't mind leeway on a checked swing call if a ball comes up and in at a batter that thinks about swinging and then earnestly tries get out of the way.

I don't understand why mlb doesn't just change the rule so that if the bat crossed the plate its a swing. That seems to be what everyone refers to as "went" anyway and also seems to be what umpires are looking at.

@Starpotatoes someone suggested adding the word fully, so if any attempt is checked by pulling back, it's a checked swing

@XXelpollodiabloXX Жыл бұрын
@@arley2246 Ick. As others have pointed out, he very nearly made contact. Deciding not to swing when the ball is exactly where it would be if you had chosen to fully swing seems a little silly. And what constitutes a full swing in any case? I'd rather it be like, "If in the opinion of the umpire, the bat reached a point where it was at an 80° angle from the batter..." or something. Then the base ump would have a compass and go down and, using a complex system of lasers, mark the location of the head of the bat, then verify via satellite.

This is why I'd love to see broadcast teams have a former pro umpire (not necessarily an MLB one, just one who knows the rules in and out) as an analyst. The insight that someone like that could offer would benefit the fans as well as the announcers. "Hey, Bart! Can you tell us why this or that was called or not called?" "Hey, Bart! What is the manager yelling about down there? What kind of things might be be saying if they were translated to PG?" "Hey, Bart! To address Mr. Semien’s argument that it was a ball, he is partially correct. The call of the pitch, based on location, was indeed called a ball. However due to Mr. Semien’s attempt to strike at, and miss, a legally pitched ball the call changes to strike three. I would like to hear Mr. Semien’s argument for why that should not be a swing, because unfortunately player’s intention does not factor into the rule, and the video evidence appears to support U1.

Looks like the technology of being able to look at it’s with an iPad didn’t help the situation . Get rid of all this technology bs and get back to the “ pure” game as it was meant to be. But as you know , $$ matters these days; not the beauty of the game as it once was.

Ramon is just like Carapazza. Love nothing more than being the Center of attention and puffing out their chests by tossing players.

All of those ejections were totally justified. Idiot players and coaches earned their ejections arguing a correct call by the umpires.

It's almost like you think umpires are REQUIRED to take abuse. The worst part about the player and coaches arguing is that it wasn't even in the immediate action after the strike call. Therefore they had INTENT to create the altercation.

Weak from the umpire. No reason to eject Maddux that quickly or Bochy. Just eject the whole team so the game can be over and the fans can cheer how great you are. Pathetic.

Maddux has no business arguing with the umpire, that is the managers job. He should be ejected as soon as he walks leaves the dugout.

@@alanhess9306 Where is the rule that says a pitching coach should be ejected the moment he walks out of the dugout?
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 Жыл бұрын
@@roymauler It is the job of the manager to talk to umpires. Assistant coaches have no such authority and will be ejected immediately. The coaches coach players, the manager manages the team and interacts with the umpires. 8.02(b) If there is reasonable doubt that any umpire’s decision may be in conflict with the rules, the manager may appeal the decision and ask that a correct ruling be made. Such appeal shall be made only to the umpire who made the protested decision. Notice where it says manager, an assistant coach has no such authority.
