It was definitely in play, but the thing that still baffles me the most, is that Welke (HP Umpire) called it a homerun when A. he was the farthest away and B. it was the 3rd base umps call to make, which like CCS said in the video, an umpire is not supposed to overrule another unless the calling umpire asks for help..

That is exactly what I would have done by the time he goes out there the replay is 100% clear, simply ask the umpire what the rule is? NOT the call, then he only has two choices he either states the rule correctly and which point the evidence is CLEAR and they ruled incorrectly or they misstate the rule at which point it is clear they don't know the rule under either situation you should win the protest. Protests are never about judgement call and this is no longer a judgement call once you have replay the ball CLEARLY hits the pad, the pad is NOT above the rail which is what is required for a home run.

I was at this game sitting right behind the red sox dugout, was looking right at Morales when he gave the signal, he first pointed the ball fair and then immediately went to the home run signal, without ever looking back to the infield. Gabe Morales made the call himself and then Welke got the crew together and they decided to make it a crew chief review.

In my opinion, safety fencing should consistently be an out-of-bounds home run. It's a different design from the outfield walls and doesn't go across the entire outfield like the outfield walls do. I think back to the May 2013 game between the A's and Indians in Cleveland, when the A's tied the game on a solo home run in the top of the 9th, but upon review was wrongly reversed as a double, despite hitting the safety fencing. (The A's then lost the game in the 9th.)

@@mptr1783 Except that a home run is not a judgment call. Mistakes can be made (as they were in this case), but it is NEVER a judgment call. It either hit somewhere that is considered in play, or it hit somewhere that is considered a home run. The problem in this case was that the replay officials did not take into account specific ground rules concerning the stadium. The stadium rules (established by MLB, not by the team themselves) state that for it to be a home run, it must clear the short safety fence around the outfield. The padding which the ball hit in this case was below the top of the fence line, and therefore in play. Even a ball that hits the top of a fence and bounces back into the field is considered in play, unless the ball hit something which is definitely considered in home run territory. 1. The pad is NOT at the top of the wall. It is attached to the foul pole which is behind the fence. It all depends on what they decide to call that pad. It is not, in fact, any part of “ the wall” but I suppose you can call it what you want and then determine the action based on whatever rules apply to the thing you decide to call it. If you call the pad part of the wall, whether it actually is physically part of the wall, then the ball is in play since it did not go over “the wall”.

You can quote rules as the day is long guess what that doesn't mean umpires actually follow them You had the umpire getting in the Giants dugout yesterday because they were doing the fist pump to the head which is a military signal which has several meetings and why the dodgers were doing it I don't understand but he ejected or wanted to eject some player for unsportsman like conduct and goes over to the Giants dugout screaming and hollering and gabe Kaplan who really defended himself because the umpire does not go over to the dugout like that you call gabe out and you have the conversation but they do what they want because they can

My guess (and could well be wrong) - umpires weren't sure where to place Perez if they ruled it fair/in play but not a home run (correct) -- do they place him on third or do they think he would have scored with a throw from the outfield/cut off throw?

Cora, for pay reasons, needs to have the ejection reversed MLB. Welke needs to by fined and or suspended for 1 game for breaking MLB rules for umpires. The job the rest of the crew did was overshadowed by an overreaching umpire, who clearly doesn't know the ground rules or rules and roles of umpiring.

@@MattZRJSRoxy This is why protest need to come back to baseball. The home umpire did something against the rules of an umpire, The call stood, not confirmed, not overturned. Welke needs a suspension for 1 game, Cora was justified in his complaint. It wasn't about replay, it was about them not knowing the ground rules, replay was lazy, Welke is a power hungry moron, and it overshadowed a great umpired game by the other umpires.

You’d think the umpiring crew in New York has the ground rules at their disposal to review all of this. They should have 1) understood where the fence line was for a home run, 2) reviewed which umpires call takes priority in that situation. What’s the point of the call to New York if they don’t even do any of that?
@russell4788

Unless Wilke screwed up the call so much that trying to figure out where the runners were and where to place them was deemed to difficult, remember it was called "stands" not "confirmed" or "overturned".

@CloseCallSports, Your analysis is incorrect. The 3B umpire DID indeed rule it a home run, Welke did not overturn it. He signaled for a fair ball, and then immediately after that motioned HR. The announcers in your video are incorrect. I live in KC, there was much discussion of this play on sports radio and numerous people who were there said they all saw Morales signal HR before Welke even did anything. Your analysis of the ground rules at Kauffman Stadium are also not relevant to the play. The ball did not hit the fence. It hit the padding on the foul pole above the fence. The safety fence 5 feet to the right of the pole is completely irrelevant to this play. What IS relevant is the padding on the foul pole above the fence. If it hits that above the wall (which the padding is above the wall), then it is a HR.

I can see why Welkie thought it was a home run. In every other ball park, if the ball hits the foul pole, it is a home run. He was probably trying to protect the third base ump from missing a homerun call. Stupid ballpark design, move the foul pole behind the wall like every other ballpark.

The only thing I can think of is Welke overruled the call of fair and in play to “home run” thinking the ball hit the pole itself (which as we see from the left field camera it hit the padding in front of the pole, NOT the pole itself) given the action of the ball after hitting whatever. Worse, if you picture where the ball hit from the left field camera and look at where it hit from the closeup shot from behind the plate that ball actually hit to the right of the yellow line and the foul line on the wall--in other words the third base umpire’s call should be fair not a home run, ball still in play. It would be interesting to see if the third base umpire even made a call in the first place; that also might explain Welke calling fair, home run even though as HP umpire it’s not normally.

Freeze frame at 3:42-that ball should have been fair ball-in play, no homer. It hit in front of the pole, in the green padding just to the right of the yellow line, below the top of the wall or railings.
