When both are pronounced correctly, Elam sounds _remarkably_ like the endonym Iran; so much so that if spoken fast enough one might mistake one name for the other. I think the peoples of the Persian Plateau have for a long time called their land ایران and for an even longer time before that ایلام. This, to me, is a much more natural and plausible explanation for the origin of the name Iran rather than “land of the Aryans”...
