The Dravidian languages are a language family spoken mainly in southern India and parts of eastern and central India, as well as in Sri Lanka with small pockets in southwestern Pakistan, southern Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, and overseas in other countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The Dravidian languages with the most speakers are Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. There are also small groups of Dravidian-speaking scheduled tribes, who live outside Dravidian-speaking areas, such as the Kurukh in Eastern India and Gondi in Central India.
Though some scholars have argued that the Dravidian languages may have been brought to India by migrations in the fourth or third millennium BCE or even earlier, the Dravidian languages cannot easily be connected to any other language family, and they could well be indigenous to India.
Epigraphically the Dravidian languages have been attested since the 2nd century BCE as Tamil-Brahmi script on the cave walls discovered in the Madurai and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. Only two Dravidian languages are spoken exclusively outside the post-1947 state of India: Brahui in the Balochistan region of Pakistan and Afghanistan; and Dhangar, a dialect of Kurukh, in parts of Nepal and Bhutan. Dravidian place names along the Arabian Sea coasts and Dravidian grammatical influence such as clusivity in the Indo-Aryan languages, namely Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati, Marwari, and Sindhi, suggest that Dravidian languages were once spoken more widely across the Indian subcontinent.

UPDATE - August 2018. The DNA analysis of a 4,500-year-old male skeleton from an Indus Valley site (Rakhigarhi) has revealed that the population was most closely related to the Irula (a south Indian tribal community). The paper also suggests that the area's ancient citizens probably spoke an early Dravidian language. www.indiatoday.in/india/story/rakhigarhi-excavation-indus-valley-civilisation-irula-dravidian-language-1328959-2018-08-31

@Hare Krishna The early Proto-Dravidian language could be spoken by the ASI people (Hunter gatherers,AASI × Neolithic Iranians)! The Neolithic Iranians likely spoke an Elamo-Dravidian (or Proto-Zagrosian) language.

@@bharathikthevar1891 "In some 3rd-1st century BCE Tamil inscriptions, words of Kannada influence such as 'nalliyooraa', 'kavuDi' and 'posil' have been introduced. The use of the vowel 'a' as an adjective is not prevalent in Tamil but its usage is available in Kannada. Kannada words such as 'gouDi-gavuDi'transform into Tamil’s 'kavuDi' for lack of the usage of Ghosha svanain Tamil. Hence the Kannada word 'gavuDi' becomes 'kavuDi' in Tamil. 'Posil' ('hosilu') was introduced into Tamil from Kannada and colloquial Tamil uses this word as 'Vaayil'. In a 1st century CE Tamil inscription, there is a personal reference to 'ayjayya', a word of Kannada origin. In a 3rd century CE Tamil inscription there is usage of 'oppanappa vIran'. Here the honorific 'appa' to a person’s name is an influence from Kannada. Another word of Kannada origin is 'taayviru' and is found in a 4th-century CE Tamil inscription. These are some examples that are proof of the influence of Kannada on Tamil before the common era and in the early centuries of the common era." -Iravatham Mahadevan Tamil Scholar Another Tamil research scholar K Appadurai has proved in his research work and book ‘The place of Kannada and Tamil in India’s national culture’ that Greek dramatists of the 5th-4th century BCE, particularly Euripides and Aristophanes, appear to have been familiar with the Kannada country and the Kannada language, and had actually used Kannada phrases and expressions in the dialogues of their characters along with Persian and Punic in their skits and dramas. This shows a far more intimate contact of the Greeks with Kannada culture than with Indian culture elsewhere. There is ample evidence to show Kannda's antiquity with regards to Tamil. I agree, Tamil developed it's literature faster than Kannada. That's the only. Both languages are mirror images of each other. Infact Kannada has more Dravidian words and many words which are lost in Tamil are still in use in Kannada. Tulu is a different strain altogether, it might have been the first language to have seperated from the Dravidian family chain. Even before Tamil-Kannada. People are still debating that. But as it stand Kannada and Tamil have the oldest and closest relation with the Dravidian. Both in literature and speech.

vignesh poojari Karnataka region has acquired it's name from KARU NADU. KARU meaning cow , Nadu is place, city. So derivation is from KARU not KAAR!! The place has it's mention in ramayana too as Karnata desha. Human Civilization in this areahas been recorded in Ramayana (This let's us know language usage was prominent in this place) The birth place of God Hanuman is in Karnataka(Koppala,Bellary region) called Anjani Betta. RishiMukha where sugreeva stayed for sometime is here! The word Mukha meaning face in Kannada will give an idea of language usage involving Kannada roots! Now coming to discussion about which language came first in existence,we must understand history research is difficult job and there will be no assurance that any findings will be final as research is never ending. As we know all South Indian languages are grouped as Dravidian Language! More precisely there was a time when language used between godavari to kaveri river region was called as Proto Dravidian. Kannada,Tamil is believed got separated from proto Dravid language and developed independently. It is suggested that the language was spoken in the 4th millennium BCE, and started disintegrating into various branches around 3rd millennium BCE. However it's interesting to note that KANNADA as SPOKEN LANGUAGE is said to have separated from its proto-language source earlier than Tamil and about the same time as Tulu. Now coming to written inscription Kannada is seen written in brahmagiri inscription dating back to 300BCE. This brahmagiri inscription raised by ashoka describes Kannada word ISILA and states the ancient site of brahmgiri inscription ,present day chitradurga had a locality named Ishila. This is also the place of sage Gautama Maharshi. Now we can know kannada was being used long back by a society. This record dating back to 300BCE itself shows that the ISHILA locality formed and dated long back.Written Kannada word Ooralli(city) is also found in Alexandria on a wall erected by Alexander. He ordered to erect a wall on which he could write the remanant words found out of 36k palm writings. (Which got fire accidentally).Greek dramatists of the 5th-4th century BCE were purportedly familiar with the Kannada country and language. This would show a far more intimate contact of the Greeks with Kannada culture than with Indian culture elsewhere Now looking at early written inscription of Tamil ,the old Tamil is found written in pots and caves during 2nd century BC So now written words of both kannada and Tamil (that are found) date back to 3rdBCE. Now seeing this we can draw a conclusion that Kannada Tamil came from proto Dravid language . Good written form of Kannada and Tamil are found to be in India around 3 century BCE. But the fact Greeks used kannada in their script for drama during 5 century BCE accounts slight early emergence of Kannada over Tamil. Seeing the fact that cave painting and rise of early human traces dating back to 10-20 thousand years old found in Anigundenda region( Kishkinda Region) ,one can understand Civilization was growing much faster in Karnataka region thus supporting researchers (of proto Dravid language ) fact that spoken Kannada was first to emerge out of proto Dravid language!!

@@aikyabharatha288 actually yes it did, when Karnataka fell to the Pallavas during the Mauryan age, Pallavas court Language was Sanskrit, yes they aren't Tamil people like Tamils claim, during that age Pallavas tried to make the general population speak Sanskrit during that time some people only took up some words of Sanskrit and Added in their Tamil which later developed into Different south Indian Languages we see today, as Pallavas were unsuccessful in making south India Sanskrit states. they later lost to the Santavahanas (Marathi's, Kannadigas and Telugu's) and the Cholas (Tamil) they lost control and started an alliance with the Cholas and later adapted Tamil as their court language. before that, even the whole of South India only followed a single script which was called Circular Script which was given as a gift by Pallavas then we developed it much further. then due to conflicts among the Santavahanas, they divided themselves into 3 different dynasties at first Rastrakutas (Marathi's yes Originally Marathi people are South Indians as well.) then the Chalukya dynasty (Kannadigas and Telugu's), and Gangas Dynasty (which has 2 routes one in Odisha who later became Kalinga and one in Karnataka who spoke Tulu). During this age is when people started developing their Languages and clash of power began n South India, even Cholas who were Tamils as well were seen as Foreigners by Cheras and Pandiyas that sparked a war among them then Chalukyas consent struggle with Rastrakutas, after some victories Chalukyas became stable and they divided themselves into 2 sets of people Western Chalukyas and Eastern Chalukyas which became the first Telugu Kingdom on its own. then when the Western Chalukya Kingdom started attacking the Eastern Chalukyas the Cholas intervened and helped the eastern Chalukyas to secure a victory that is how Eastern Chalukyas and Cholas became Allies, then later on Cholas even started integrating with Chalukyas of the west and Rastrakutas and Gangas as well that is when for the first time Southern Empires came under one banner under the Cholas that is when the foreign expeditions began and then even captured Odisha and West Bengal under the Chola banner. then the inner struggle of the Tamil made the Chola empire fall because of the Pandiyas. then Delhi sultanate Turks started their conquest against the southern Kingdoms and many fell under its control. that came to the rise of the Vijaya Nagara Empire who took advantage of and got rid of Delhi sultanates in return they conquered the whole of the South just like the Chola empire did. then again due to inner struggles and countless invasions from other parts many parts of south India fell Delhi sultanate captured Karnataka which is known as a Mysore Province under Tipu Sultan then the rest happened. well, South Indians literally are related by blood. why Tamil does not have Sanskrit words because during the 1900s Tamil started removing Sanskrit words from Tamil while Kannada Telugu and Malayalam did not that is why the Sanskrit influence is still there that is all thanks to "Pallavas".

The material remains found from Keezhadi is dated back to the last half of the first millennium BCE whereas the sites of Indus Valley civilisation go back to at least 3000BCE. So many people have answered here on the basis of preassumed notions of Dravidian vs Aryan etc. However there is no material evidence to establish these racial differences from the archaeological records of the Indian sub continent.

stavros343 Sino-Tibetan speakers first originated in the Yellow River Basin situated in the eastern part of what is known in Tibetan as Amdo (ཨ༌མདོ) on the Tibetan Plateau, and in Chinese as Qinghai Province (青海省), from the largest lake in the province Qinghai Lake (青海湖; “azure lake” translation from Mongolian: Хөх нуур Khokh Nuur, Tibetan: མཚོ་སྔོན་པོ། Tso Ngonpo). From there, the ancestors of modern day Han Chinese people migrated east along the Yellow River towards the Central Plains (中原地區) of China. Meanwhile the ancestors of the Tibetans migrated west further into the Tibetan Plateau (西藏高原). The ancestors of various Burmic speaking tribes like the Bamar, Yi etc. migrated south along the Irrawaddy River into Yunnan and Upper Burma (Myanmar). Ancient Sino-Tibetan speaking tribes worshipped sheep/goats as their totems as the ethnic Qiang (羌族) in China still do today and it is still visible in Chinese characters today that the sheep/goat played an important role in livestock. “美” (Beautiful) = “羊” (Goat) + “大” (Big) “養” (To raise) = “羊” (Goat) + “食” (Feed) “鮮” (Fresh) = “魚” (Fish) + “羊” (Goat) “義” (Righteous) = “羊” (Goat) + “我” (Me) The ancient Chinese character for “窯” (House) is a pictograph depicting a lamb under a roof. Over time however, the Chinese began using the current term “家” instead which shows a pig under a roof, and this term has lasted until today. The ancient form of Chinese housing on the Loess Plateau of Shaanxi Province today however as still referred to as “窯洞”. In terms of agriculture, they grew and consumed wheat and millet. However, as the Han Chinese expanded south towards Southern China they also picked up the domestication of pigs and rice agriculture as well. In China today there remains a strong geographical divide in which Northern Chinese tend to eat more wheat and millet products whereas Southern Chinese tend to prefer rice products. In both ancient Chinese and Hmong mythology, it is stated that the Chinese were not the indigenous inhabitants of the Central Plains, but rather they came somewhere from the west and under the leadership of the Yellow Emperor (軒轅黃帝) and Fiery Emperor (炎帝), invaded the Jiu-Li tribes (九黎); believed to be Hmong-Mien speakers under the leadership of the god of war Chiyou (蚩尤). The Chinese won and settled in the Central Plains whereas the Hmong-Mien tribes migrated south into Southern China where Tai-Kadai speakers lived. The family name of the Fiery Emperor is “Jiang” (姜), which is made up of two characters: “羊” (Sheep/goat) and “女” (Woman). Most Chinese family names in the past contained the radical for “woman” eg the royal family of the Zhou Dynasty had the surname “姬” etc.; either way it seems to suggest something about the ancient Chinese worshipping goats / sheep as totems. It is believed that the ancient Chinese are descended from the ancient Qiang people (古羌人), with the word “羌” being a combination of “羊” (Goat) + “人” (Person). Genetic evidence of sheep and goat husbandry in East Asia seems to suggest that they were first domesticated in the region of NorthWestern China as well. The Karen of Myanmar have a myth known as “Htaw Meh Pa” which states that they once lived somewhere in the far north where it was cold and there was a river of running sand (the Yellow River Basin is pretty much full of silt). Furthermore it is stated that on their migration south towards where they are currently living (Myanmar, and more recently Thailand in order to avoid the military junta in Myanmar), they came across the Chinese who taught them how to get meat out of shellfish (if for no good rhyme or reason why did they mention an ethnic group that lived so far away unless they once lived in close proximity).

arunrchaturvedi Karnataka region has acquired it's name from KARU NADU. Kannada,Tamil,Tulu is believed got separated from proto Dravid language and developed independently.

No development, no proper infracture and no Tamil cannot able to be government employee like police, army etc.., The exact same thing is happening in Tulu region in karnataka.Tuluvas never be a part of Karnataka before British government even in British government it was under Madras Presidency..Kannada majority people almost deleted the original Tulu script by implementing the Kannada script..and they imposing Kannada in schools..Others Indians and world don't know about Tulu language, Tulu people.Tuluvas can't expose their own identity under the shadow of mighty Kannada government even though Tulvas population is nearly to 1.5 crores.Tuluvas should be recongnised to whole India and across the global.Because they have their own culture, tradition, foods etc.., I don't want to happended like that Srilankan Tamils to Tuluvas.

I would be interested to compare Dravidian languages and Aboriginal languages of Australia as often the resemblance of people of Southern India and Aboriginals is very close. Even hearing the languages sounds similar. Have not looked into haplogroups.

Not really. I think the aboriginals languages sounds some what similar to Tamil. But listen to Telugu language, it sounds very different to Aboriginal languages. And as for looks the average person in south India look nothing like Aboriginal Aussies lol. The skull shape is way too different. Again few Tamil people I’ve seen slightly look like aboriginal but most of them don’t. I read somewhere that people from southern India moved to Australia around 4000 years ago. And some aboriginals have indian DNA or something.

its not much really, the connection is very vague though. Recent genetic studies of 2019-20 have shown that ancestry of modern dravidians is from neolithic iranian farmers and indigenous indian hunter gatherers along with minor indoaryan genes. The indigenous indian hunter gatherers are speculated to have been related to Andamanese tribes who by distant connection are related to papuans and aboriginal australians but their genetic separation had taken take very long time ago of almost 20000 years ago. So the genetic connection looks just about possible distantly but for the languages to be related it has be proven that languages existed back 20,000 years ago

Bhaasha is a Sanskrit word. The language is called "Nudi" in Telugu. Most of us do not know the difference between Andhra Language Telugu and Sanskrit. Andhra language is a combination of Telugu and Sanskrit. Sanskrit is a wonderful language. The vocabulary in Sanskrit is infinite. This is its feature. Telugu is vowel ending Ajanta language ..no language could beat and surpass Telugu in beauty. Greater than Telugu Sanskrit in this regard. For example to know the feature of Ajanta language "రాముడు ఒకడు ఉన్నాడు అని అనుకున్నాను అని అనుకున్నావేమొ......." can be written in one sentence as "రాముడొకడున్నాడననుకున్నానననుకున్నావేమొ................................" This can be written without stopping anywhere in a single piece. Hundreds of thousands of sentences can be written in a single sentence. If you add infinite vocabulary to it (that vocabulary belongs to Sanskrit) it is wonderful. That Wonder is the Andhra language that we think is Telugu today. Example: In English In Sanskrit In Telugu(classical) In Andhra Language Bhaashaa Nudi Bhaasha Wheel Chakram Gaanu/Tiragali Chakramu Mind Manas Ullamu Manasu Salute Namaskaarah Dandamu Namaskaaramu Thanks Dhanyawaadah Mangideelu Dhanyawaadamu

Tamil and Proto Dravidan language are similar of about 80%. Some even say Proto Dravidan language is just ancient Tamil. Shiva worship of the Indus Valley is the original Dravidan religion. The only sad thing is that very few knows and speak the proper Tamil language. We are using the casual slang these days and claiming its Tamil. The pure Tamil language is super beautiful. 👌🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾
