I love that Sylvia’s doctor got down on his knees and looked her in the eyes when he gave her the difficult news that she wasn’t going to have any other option but to be made comfortable so she could likely pass away gently and without pain. She was clearly a very strong woman and raised a wonderful family that loved and appreciated her very much. 1 year, 10 years, 50 years or 100 years, it still hurts the same when someone dies.

My grandma passed away from falling down and hurting her hip. She went on life support on Christmas and kissed me goodbye and she died holding me. This brought back so much pain. I'm so glad that the doctor was so kind and honest to Sylvia

@@ShaunaShuford Right! I know first hand so many people that opt to not tell patients that they are likely to die and I don’t know that I would want to be lied to like that. I am so sorry for your loss, clearly your grandma meant so much to you xo

I also liked the part of him getting down on his knees. What I didn't like though was him not being very straightforward with the important information. At first he told the daughter they were going to operate on her because there would be now other way to geht her back up on her feet, without considering at that point that with such an elderly person an operation might just not be possible and tell her that. Or at least tell her they have to consider wether it'll be possible for her or not. And even Sylvia telling she might not be able to go back home isn't clear enough in my eyes, because that could as well involve a nursing facility. In my opinion it is very important to tell patients and their families very clear: I'm afraid you might not be able to survive this, while we will try our best to keep you as comfortable as possible... It is hard telling this to people as I know myself from years of nursing experience, but people do appreciate honesty... And they deserve it...

Editing made that time seem very short, but clearly things changed once the dr got the information that her heart wouldn't tolorate the spinal block. NTA

If I had an elderly parent or grandparent to take care of, I would make sure that they don’t need to use stairs. Their bedroom would be on the main level as well as a bathroom. Less risk of falls😊

I really feel for that doctor at the end who had to deliver that news to the patient and her family. Can't've been easy. edit: I should add that of course it's harder for the family losing the loved one, but I feel like the focus is always on them in these situations and the docs/nurses are often overlooked.

I don't know why they don't build homes on one level. No stairs. It can't be that hard. The stairs are too dangerous with a lift or not. It would cut down on the number of injured people. I live in Canada & a lot of our care homes are one story. Much safer. Yes we have apartment buildings with elevators, etc. When I see people coming in with horrific injuries from falling down stairs, I shudder. I love this series ❤️.

It’s very British to have row houses in the larger cities - very much like NYC. As such, they need to have multiple stories. Single story houses are a waste of space unless they’re stacked on top of each other. But who wants thumping above their heads, and where would the attic space go? She was probably living in the house her family grew up in. Why bother moving when the house is home? The better solution would to have a seat belt on the chair lift. An elevator would not work because the houses are so narrow - unless the stairs are permanently removed. Imagine the cost of the conversion plus the upkeep of the mechanical works. Far too much for the average family and worse for retirees.

Seeing Sylvia's story makes me feel sad for her and all the women who were and have been forced into lives they may not have wanted, simply because of "tradition". She was a bad ass who helped the war effort by working at freaking gun sites, and yet, when her time in the service was over, she was forced into the limited role of mother and wife. It's also pretty obvious that it wasn't a marriage of love, but it was a marriage that was done because of expectations. Her husband was clearly a "Mad Men" type jerk who was basically like, "Make my supper and take care of the children, female object I married." Notice how they had to go to the same place for vacations all the time, and the one time they did what she wanted to do, the sexist ass stepped in and made sure it never happened again. She would have never said it, but it was clear how much happier she was after he kicked off. She was free from him and the obligations society put on her, and she was free to become the person she always was inside. I'm glad she had that time to enjoy her life. Also, the doctor taking care of her was amazing.
