(29 Oct 1978) The Cardinals gathered in Rome to elect a successor to Pope John-Paul I and for the first time in four hundred years they chose a non-Italian, Cardinal Karel Wojtyla of Poland. The new Pope took the name of John-Paul II and a large crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square for his inauguration.

It was great day for polish people and for the whole world.He was like Jesus full of grace and mercifull.He has been my hero for so many reasons.I can feel nothing but love ad thanks for this man,a true man of God.Thousand of years will come.I lived in time of John Paul II.

Im English and not religious But Pope John Paul II he was incredibly special, he's someone i look up to, he definitely deserved to be sainted . All of Poland's people should be proud of such a man

It kind of makes me sad to hear the announcer imply that Poland was communist by choice. My parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, who lived in Poland during this era all despise communism.

I think if ever there was a need to have a statue of someone to look up to, then Saint Pope John Paul II needs to have statues put in every country that has a cathedral, right outside as a beacon of hope for all people
