I had a electric car for 9 months sick of going for charging at garage and out of order or sat waiting for 40 minutes to start charging, now just gone back to a new ford petrol

Yes, we're fans of Vicky, no doubt. Unfortunately there's a bit more details involved when attempting to install a charger for your EV. Mounting the magical box on the outside is the final step really. How far are you from the main breaker point? How long was the run to the actual resting place of the box? All those things are the difficult part. While some might be able to attempt to do this on their own, it's best not to fool around with electrical power of this type. In my situation, my fuse panel was located in my basement about 50-60meters from where I would need the plug. A plug is all I needed. The same type of plug we use for our dryer (nema 15/40?). The most difficult thing was running the heavy duty cable from the panel, somewhat disguised along the wall, thru the top portion of the ceiling, drilling a whole thru the concrete into the cellar, from the cellar into the garage. And then running the cable along the top portion of my garage towards the furthest side of the 1st door. So yes, about a 50-60meter length of cable. Installing the wall plug was super easy for the electrician. Another major concern was making sure your current fuse panel is able to take the added amps for a 2nd dryer plug. Most newer homes nowadays only come with 100amps for the fuse. Enough to run 1 stove, 1 dryer and a fridge. Adding an EV charger would obligate you to upgrade your entire fuse panel. An additonal cost for sure. Thankfully my place is over 35yrs old and came with a 200amp fuse panel. Enough to run 2 EV ports along with all the usual home appliances. I could get really fancy and purchase one of these wall boxes but thankfully Tesla's already come with scheduling built into the main app. 🙂

Wonder how the outside unit works when -30c , or when when covered in ice and snow? That same unit can be installed inside also I recon. I do have 3 car warm garage also, but it would be nice to have an outside unit also.

I’d like to know what makes this charger at over twice the price of others so special. Surely not the box. I could just get a cabinet to cover one that cost £450 instead of £1100.

I don’t understand why using a 3-pin socket puts a strain on the electricity of you home. This is a slower charge than a dedicated charging point, so the current and power going to the house at any one time will be less. Also, a 3-pin charger can charge up to about 3KW, which is about the power of two kettles. While it would be painfully slow, I would certainly expect to be able to reliably charge an electric car this way.

Here in Au the whole EV thing has turned out to be an absolute faff. Unlike the UK we all have driveways, how the street parking mess that is the UK is going to sustain charging baffles me no end.

I feel sorry for anyone who has jumped on the government bandwagon and already got an EV where as realistically we still have 30 years before you really need one (buy a petrol one in 10 years time) then keep that for 20 years but by then they will probably be hassle free

You missed one really important thing you need - a house with a driveway. Such a shame you are pushing the EV BS.
