PLEASE NOTE: This old video had annotations explaining the parts, but because of KZfaq changes they no longer appear. Sorry!
I rigged a scrap electric window mechanism to some boards and connected it to power to demonstrate its action. Apparently, it was scrapped because the connector was faulty (I just cut and stripped the wires), and one of the arms was bent.
חיברתי מנגנון של חלון חשמלי ללוחות עץ ולחשמל כדי להדגים את אופן הפעולה שלו. החלון הזה היה גרוטאה מכיוון שהמחבר שלו לא היה תקין (אני פשוט חתכתי וחשפתי את החוטים), ואחת הזרועות היתה קצת עקומה.

Hi, there's nothing here to "make"... I got the mechanism from a car repair shop, fastened it to a wooden board with screws and simply connected it to a 12V power supply. Just remember to be careful with the electricity, these currents can be nasty.

this mechanism became lethal when put electric moters on. them more modern cars use thin wires presumably so they will snap if something/one gets caught in them.

I sure wish they still used this system to make fixing windows simple. Some of the newer cars have cables and pulleys that are not easy to repair. If the newer ones are better, why do they cost 3X more to fix???

Let's say the window glass support is in the very lowest down position and the motor breaks. Will i be able to manual (by hand) lift the glass support and window up to close position? Will the motor's transmission and the gear arc prevent me from lifting it? My guess is I won't be able to lift it. For the same reason, a window can remain stationary any where between fully open and close and yet won't fall. Thanks! Great video!

The transmission will probably prevent you from raising the window manually (also, your car may have a different mechanism than the one in the video). It's best to go see a professional about this... thanks!

The motor just needs 12V DC with sufficient power (like from a car battery or, in this video, the yellow and black wires of a PC power supply). Mind you these currents can be dangerous, don't touch anything while it's "live".

How is the motor being connected to power ? Are you using alligator clips ? I tried hooking my same exact model with alligator clips to a power supply but I did not get any movement please help !! Do you need some other kind of wire to make the connection to power?

Any wire that's not too thin will do just fine. You need a power supply that can provide enough current in the required voltage (that depends on the motor, for car stuff usually 12V), and the motor itself has to be in working order, not stuck mechanically etc.

What causes the motor to hold? Is there a failsafe holding off-brake attached to the stepper motor?

+Zxenmusic This is not a stepper motor but a "simple" DC motor. I suspect it holds position thanks to the gear: there's probably a worm drive in there or something similar.

It sounds like a worm drive. That explains why car windows are super slow. I wonder if it would hold well with a steeper thread. It would definitely be faster.

+Zxenmusic A stepper will not hold position properly unless it's powered, and that's not really an option in a parked car. Perhaps there are also safety considerations in regard to window speed.

I said 'steeper'. Holding a position is essential in nearly all robotic motor set ups. But speed is also important. I'm glad I learned that stepper motors cannot hold any better than my robot servos. I was going to replace them all. Now I'm thinking that I'll replace the gears with spiral threads.

+Zxenmusic Right, I misread. I guess there's only so much room for play between speed and accuracy (too steep, and something may slip or rotate back). But to be honest, most of my knowledge of gears is from LEGO sets, so I'm not an authority on this matter :-)

When the window is fully up or down but your finger is still pushing the button, how does the motor not burn out. Is there a microswitch in the groove that disconnects power to the motor?

Oh wow, that was 8 years ago, I can't remember... basically the geared arc on the arm limits the motion range mechanically, I'm pretty sure there was no switch in there. I guess the car computer can test the motor current and stop when it's too high for too long.

Most older car power door windows are manual all the way. What stops the motor is the window hitting the door frame, if you keep holding the button then yes it will burn out.

I have manual windows that work just like these regulators. If I buy a motor, will it work to just replace the manual cranking or do I have to buy the whole replacement assembly?

I'm not an authority in these matters... please consult a certified car mechanic. A replacement motor has to match both the mechanism and the car's electric system, and neither is obvious.

This basically provides linear motion, so it'll require some more work to make is suitable for a tracker... perhaps a windshield wiper mechanism would be more suitable :-)

how many ampere in your 12vdc(yellow)? i also using power window motor to my project but my PSU turn off when i connect the motor. my PSU rated 500watts (yellow)12vdc 25ampere.

+Junior CoE Try making a solid connection before you turn on the PSU. If it still shuts down, there must be something wrong with the PSU or with the motor - 25A are more than enough (think of a car battery, which should be able to operate four of these + the other car systems...)

+Junior CoE No, sorry - thick wire is good, but what I meant was simply to have all the connections ready before you turn on the PSU. In other words, not to hold the wires separately and touch them together while the PSU is already working.

Note the structure of the geared arc (I show it on 0:20). I don't have it anymore for closeups, but it's built in a way that prevents further movement once the window reaches the end of its range.

But it doesn't need to reach the end of its range to hold. You can lean on a car window half way closed and it will hold. The brakes work in both manual and electric windows, so I still don't know the answer.

a screw shaped gear plus a spur gear makes a system called a worm drive. This is my best guess, but I need confirmation.
