I wanted to try this for a while. It was a very quick build, took maybe half a day.
The chainsaw is a Titan model, it was only £50.
Very cheap but powerful 2000wats. The only slight problem is that the end of the blade vibrates when I start the cut. But as soon as it in the wood about 3-4cm it stops vibrating.
The chain is just a standard crosscut chain, but it gets the job done.
The hole thing costed me less than £70, and I have a functioning chainsaw mill! Not perfect but, it does work.

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle kzfaq.infoUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

Great Job, simple enough. To improve your cuts you should consider a chain that is intended for ripping cut. Also you can hang a weight at the end of the saw minimize the end vibration, or make a "C" shape frame to support the end.

The saw may no like a 10 deg ripping chain, power wise, Might suggest changing angle slow in stages, see what works as saw isn't a dedicated miller. But an interesting Vid nonetheless.

A simple, elegant solution to a light milling problem. And one that will let one figure out the dynamics of a heavier mill using a regular chain saw. The only problem I see is that the light electric saws aren't burly enough to stand up to much use. If it's what you have, you go with it.

Both of you are off point. If you look in the description and search the product for description, it literally says 2000w - 230v. That is a bit less than 7amps. If converted to 120v you're looking at roughly 16.5 amps. They make 20 amp breakers everyday. Or just replace the damn AC motor with a brushless RC helicopter out runner with the drive clutch assembly running LiPo cells. That should destroy all that is holy in no time..

The chainsaw stopped working as it has overheating protection, most electrical devices use a thermal resistor. Once the chainsaw / thermal resistor has cooled down, the current will flow again to the motor.

If I may give a suggestion, consider making the rail (on which saw travels) itself can be movable up & down on another end rails. This enables you to adjust height of the saw from the top of the table. This way, log can be kept stationary between cuts.

Also if you made the middle bit wider where the log sits and made an identical cutter section on the other side so theres one either side of the centre section, you could cut logs double the max capaxcity of the chainsaw, working it fro both sides.

A second track is the best way..The type of chain is the other problem.I use super skip and file it at 10 degrees..the anti kickback chain the small saws come with is a joke.I have 9" between the teeth..cuts fast and vibration is minimal.have fun with it is the best way.remember you are ripping not cross cutting.a whole different way to look at it...good luck!

Great work. My suggestion would be just to regularly check for chain lubrication... when cutting on the side like this there is a strong possibility that saw dust will gum up a lubrication valve... also, ,check if it even shooting oil to the chain at all at this direction as it might not be lubrication the chain at all. I had that issue with older makita electric saw it ended up destroying th motor as chain heated, which dull it, which transfered more load to the motor... really did not saw that one coming :D
@szilardpinter
@szilardpinter 7 жыл бұрын
lutheduck thank you. That's a very good point. I was thinking about it as well. The lubrication tank did run out of oil, but the blade seems to be dry and a bit gummy. Probably it not designed for horizontal use.. I'm thinking to make some kind of external gravity feed lubrication system.. will see! Cheers!
@lutheduck
@lutheduck 7 жыл бұрын
You have 2 options - one to turn the mill to be on angle or vertical two to add additional lubrication - in which case you need to be sure that it will actually lubricate chain and not just fly of it because of the chain rotation and end up just shooting around or even staining the wood

Has anyone considered putting a longer bar on a Titan saw? If the mill was Alaskan style you wouldn't be cutting with the tip so perhaps the 2000W motor could handle the longer bar??? Its also easier to get a ripping chain in 187" than in 16"

couldnt you set it up with the bar at an angle so the tip is trailing? that might eliminate that viberation you had at the start (although it would reduce your width of cut a bit)

Larché Jacques Clarel exactly! The vibration stops as soon as the blade enters the log just a few centimetres. Might can be improved with a better quality stiffer blade. But I'm fine with that, as long as my logs becoming boards! 😊👍

Very cool. Two thoughts. And just that, thoughts. How about some wedges with the max thickness the width of the blade for the end where you start to keep timber from squeezing down on your blade. Send might be a hard cross brace from end of saw (some have holes already) at an angle in a hard ridged angle going back to your carriage to keep it from flopping? You might have to go up a couple inches before catting back to the carriage for clearance. Not sure without being there. ha ha! Just a couple thoughts. Very cool design! I finally remembered to Sub as well. ha ha, forgive me. Im old...and it sucks.
