They're commonly called eels, but they aren't eels at all! Electric eels are more closely related to catfish than true eels - shocking, isn't it? Electric eels are found throughout northern South American freshwater waterways and spend most of their time along the bottom of the water. Electric eels can produce enough voltage to knock a horse off its feet, and they've developed a way to concentrate their shock!
Scientific Name: Electrophorus electricus
Range: river basins of northern South America
Size: 6+ feet (1.8m)
Diet: invertebrates, fish, small mammals and herptiles
Lifespan: unknown in the wild; 10-20 years in captivity

I'm actually suprized more fish don't breath air. there is almost 20,000 times more o2 in the air than in the water, so breathing air can be a major advantage.

I guess it could depend on the pros and cons of exposing themselves to get a gulp of air from the surface versus not having to do so. I'm sure other factors are involved but that was the first that came to mind.

Despite their name, electric eels are not eels at all, nor are they closely related, electric eels are members of the superorder Ostariophysi, which also includes the catfish, new world knifefish, piranhas, tigerfish, carp, minnows, milkfish, and beaked sandfish.
