I'll soon be in my first year of beginning a homestead! Trying to consume as much knowledge as I can up until that point and I have to say, this has been incredibly helpful! Thanks for the great content!!

Thanks for the tip of running both wires if there's no adequate ground rod. I'm installing it on concrete.

That is why I was told to alternate ground hot so you don't rely on the hooves grounding, doesn't matter the hoof they will touch ground and hot and feel the full voltage

How do you convert the joules on a unit to volts? I have pigs to contain and concerned that I don't have enough joules. Also will be using a piece of re bar as a grounding rod, provided I can actually get it into the ground deep enough.

Can you not run a continuous wire for multiple strand heights instead of using a jumper from wire to wire on single pulls? Make first pull then with same wire drop down to next insulator and continue ?

3ft of ground rod per joule so a 15J energizer @ 3 ft per joule = 45ft of rod in the ground that would be if you are using a 1/2" diameter ground rod. This would be 8 x 6ft 1/2" ground rods. When using the Gallagher Kiwiah ground rods which is a 6" galvanized sheet formed into a W shape 7ft long as few a 3 maybe enought because of the greater surface area of this style of ground spike which is why these are recommend for larger output energizers. The ground rods are also an antenna array for capturing the current back across the ground to close the circuit when an animal touches the electric fence wire, this is why the ground rods are spaced 10ft apart the larger the array the better especially for larger energizers covering larger distances.
