Paul I agree with your point that EV's are almost always more expensive than their ICE counterparts, but I actually feel this point doesn't apply to the Tesla Model 3. I bought my Model 3 performance because there was no ICE equivalent at the 100K price level that could beat it in terms of value in my opinion. If I wanted a similarly performing sedan I would have had to spend 150K+ minimum. Add in no fuel and virtually no servicing costs, it was a no brainer for me. Sure the equivalent BMW or Merc would have a more lux interior, but I still think the model 3 has a really nice interior and an amazing screen. A V8 is lovely but I couldn't be happier with the Model 3. Cars like the Kona EV make no sense to me in terms of value. It's just a Kona which now costs 25K more because it's electric. It doesn't feel like a 70K car, so not sure who would pay that for one!

Yes that's right. The more expensive they are, the closer they are to their ICE competitors.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells work similarly to a Hybrid EV: Essentially, instead of having a massive, heavy, Li-Ion battery on board, or a huge engine and fuel tank, you replace the engine with a fuel cell, and the battery with a gas cylinder filled with highly compressed hydrogen (which theoretically has an extremely high energy density as a fuel, but the process of actually creating the fuel is very costly and inefficient, again shifting the energy problem elsewhere to fossil fuels in the grid.) The hydrogen is then sent from the tank through a hydrogen fuel cell when needed, which acts like the "engine" of the car. It comes into contact with oxygen and chemically combines with it creating useful energy, and as a byproduct, pure water. The energy is then sent to an electric motor and the car drives like an EV. They usually also have small batteries on board to regenerate energy during braking and to power the electric motor to improve efficiency. The water produced is simply dumped onto the road through an "exhaust" as it is nothing more than pure H2O. The easiest way to think of a Hydrogen car is to think of it as a Closed-Circuit Hybrid, with a lot of the same pro's and con's. The key difference being a Hydrogen tank instead of Petrol, and a Hydrogen Fuel Cell instead of an engine. The principle of operation is the same. When the tank is empty, simply stop and fuel up like you would with Petrol. As for Pro's and Con's: Hydrogen is difficult and expensive to work with. It is not readily available like other fuels, nor is it easy/cheap to refine. It also adds to the complexity and cost of the design and therefore higher purchase price and maintenance costs. In theory, Hydrogen could be used in an internal combustion engine, however the design would be similar to a 4 stroke engine, and needlessly complex when a Fuel Cell / EV hybrid is a simpler solution. Hydrogen is also theoretically better than batteries due to its much greater energy density, however a Pure EV is a much simpler design again. Personally I feel Hydrogen vehicles are a good idea, about 30 years ago. In this day and age, I feel the technology is too late to make a difference. - Are they better than internal combustion vehicles? If we had the infrastructure in place like we do for other fuels, costs were similar, and the extra complexity in maintenance was negated, then yes, they are better. Investing in this tech would have been a smart idea during the oil crisis when batteries were awful. - Are they better than electric vehicles? Only while battery technology is expensive, inefficient (low range), and slow to charge, otherwise no. It won't be long until those problems are overcome and we've already seen huge strides in this field. I see Hydrogen Fuel Cells as a Hybrid vehicle, and frankly I see Hybrids are a stop-gap measure between Internal Combustion and Full Electric vehicles - which once they are available to the masses in a cheap, efficient, environmentally friendly manner are simply the best design. I hope this helps. TL;DR: Hydrogen Fuel Cells work like a Petrol Hybrid EV, but are more complex, expensive, and 30 years too late. Full electric is the way cars will go in future, but for now consider everything but Hydrogen.

Just to point out, the BMW PHEV's battery won't be completely depleted just by normal driving, even if you never plug it in. Unless you pound the throttle in full for minutes without letting it go (which is highly unlikely on public roads as you will reach illegal speeds in a matter of 10s with full throttle), you will always have around 20% of your battery reserved for your electric boost. That being said, even your screen shows no full electric range left, you can still drive it like a traditional hybrid without completely relying on the small 2.0 engine to pull all that weight, and yes, it still give you better fuel economy than a petrol model even if you managed to have used all electric range and never plugged it in. A lot of American or European PHEV owners get their cars way before the wallbox is installed, and a lot of people drive their first few weeks or even months without ever plugged in charging. The car will still work like a traditional hybrid where the car itself will use braking, cruising, or the engine to charge the battery and maintain it at a certain level without any problem, and it will still gives you all the electric torque and power when overtaking. A 2.0 petrol model may take around 6.5-7L/100km, and the PHEV will get about 2.5-3L/100km, but if you never plug it in, I personally still able to get around 5L/100km for a mixed of city and highway driving. Indeed you don't get the full capability of the PHEV without charging, but even so it still works better than a full petrol, both in power and economy.

Hi Paul. I’m a bit confused to choose between Palisade diesel and Petrol. I want to buy a palisade on test driving other vehicles. Cons with petrol is Milage and no AWD. I am hearing Diesel engines will be banned in the cities by 2030. And I may travel around 15000 kms a year. As I want to retain the car for long run (10 yrs - 15 yrs), how wise it would be to go with the diesel car. Need your advice!

It works in a similar way to the DPF. The big difference is that the burn temperature in a petrol vehicle is around half that of the DPF. So it means it can achieve a particulate burn in a wider range of conditions in comparison to a vehicle with a DPF.

@@CarExpertAus with a diesel (Volvo in my case) the car needed to run uninterrupted for example on a freeway for the DPF to regenerate. Are you saying that PPF does not have that requirement? Would it regenerate at lower temperatures and shorter runs? I thought a PPF would operate in the same way as diesel - jump on a freeway, set cruise control on and drive for 20 mins.

Some other pros/cons. Gas/Petrol: One con is that even though they produce a lot less particulates than Diesel, they create a lot more CO2. Diesel isn't perfect there either but it still makes Gas/Petrol the worst for climate change. One pro is that they can be modified for Propane or Methane. Diesels can as well but it's a bit harder and Hybrids are more complicated and it's easier for something to go wrong if you aren't a professional. Diesels: A con is that in some countries like the US only about 1/3'rd-1/2 of stations have Diesel as an option. A pro is that many can be modified for vegetable oil, which while currently more expensive than anything else (unless you know a restaurant willing to give you their waste), is more stable than the gas or diesel you would get from a station and pollutes less. Hybrids: A con is that you have both a C *and* D-class fire hazard, while all other car types have one or the other. A pro when driving long distance is that some cities (especially in Europe) have emissions-free zones. You can go through those rather than around. Electric: A con is that the battery *will* degrade over time and unlike ICE engines there is no way to replace parts without paying a mechanic so lifetime ownership is hard. A pro is that even using coal (and you *will* be using coal even if you have a *green plan), the power wasted from that is less than the power wasted from all cars using ICE's. *Those solar/wind/hydro plants exist and generate electricity whether you are paying for green power or not. You using them means other's can't which makes them use more coal and balances everything out.

what about a non plugin hybrid for long distance driving? is it more expensive to maintain?
@CarExpertAus

There are more parts in a hybrid over a non-hybrid. But it'll be less net weight than a PHEV due to a smaller battery.

Last thing I’d add for diesel vs petrol is that diesels can’t produce the same peak horsepower or rev as high as petrol engines. This is also due to the longer distance a diesel piston travels, which means a diesel piston at 4000rpm is travelling about as fast as a petrol piston at 6500rpm as it has to travel further each revolution.

Great video Paul, Im all for EV, can’t wait for Rivian in Australia. In answer to the debate about where the power comes from, anyone can purchase 100% certified green power (wind, solar,etc) in Australia, you just need to tell your provider that is what you want - don’t fall for the ‘carbon offset’ argument that’s just offsetting dirty energy.

Eventually they will tax electric cars causing their running cost to equal a normal car. They don't last as long as a normal car. I have a car from 1925 and it has it's original engine. I don't think you battery will last that long. My advice stick with diesel with push rod engines no cams.

I love to have an electric car, but the deal breakers are 1. tooooo expensive 2. no (or not enough) infrastructure to support interstate travelling
