The late Wilf Gibson was ELO's best violinist bar none, and the late Mike Edwards was a brilliant and entertaining cellist. May they both rest in peace.

and now, Former ELO Cellist Hugh McDowell Dead at 65 ultimateclassicrock.com/hugh-mcdowell-dead/
@davidmacgregor51934 жыл бұрын
@@BoltRM Yes Artie, I believe it was cancer that killed Hugh in November 2018. The second cellist in this clip is Colin Walker, he was soon to be replaced by Hugh who'd returned to ELO from Wizzard. Colin wanted to spend more time with his family, ELO's arduous touring schedule was taking it's toll on Colin's home life, so he decided to leave the band. Hugh felt that he didn't get the chance to play enough cello with Wizzard, Roy Wood had him playing more Moog synthesiser than his beloved cello so he decided to return to ELO to get more cello work. R.I.P. Hugh McDowell.

I think they got the idea for the Beethoven's 5th Symphony string intro when they played at Reading Festival. The crowd wanted an encore and the idea was to use the strings as an intro to Roll Over Beethoven to fill out time....... and the crowd loved it! Great version here.

This is possibly better than the original classic from 1956 by Chuck Berry. I know that sounds radical, but I think it is probably a better song than the original, and I LOVE Chuck Berry.

ELO kind of took it and made it theirs. But they must bow to the true Daddy of Rock. RIP-Chuck Berry
@monkeySkeptic5 жыл бұрын
What makes this performance special, I think, is that they make no effort to copy Chuck Berry. They use his words and melody but the song is immediately identifiable as an ELO production. No reason not to love both versions (as suspect most people post here do).

And Jeff once said he wasn't that good with the guitar. Yeah, right, Jeff. I wish I was that "bad". If Rod Stewart can get a Knighthood for services to music, then why hasn't Jeff got one. He's a thousand times better than Rod. He writes the songs, plays the guitar on them, does the vocals and then produces the music. What more does he have to do to be Sir Jeff??
