Electric Mistress shootout.
The Past FX Elastic Mattress and Retro Sonic Flanger are both clones of the 1976-80 18V Electric Mistress. The Elastic Mattress is slightly brighter, with less low end. The Flanger is slightly darker, with retained low end.
The Mooer E-Lady is a clone of the 1978-99 Deluxe Electric Mistress. It has a darker tone, with more midrange and a jet-like character similar to the MXR.

Thanks for making this comparison video for us all! The ThorpyFX Camoflange has a treble knob that allows it to cover a lot of the territory these pedals live in. The Mix knob is also supremely useful when you don't need a massive amount of flanging.

It's very close to the late 70s Electric Mistress. I've owned several of those and they all sounded different. Probably due to old parts and the fact that EHX had very bad quality control back in the days. The original units had a lot of hiss and a nasty volume drop. IMO it's a nobrainer going for one of these clones. Still though, when it comes to vintage gear, there's more to it than just the sound :)

Really love your videos. Best guitar and effects videos online, in my opinion. Always short, fun and to the point. Strangely, for me right now, the e-lady (which I have) sounded perhaps the nicest to me, especially on the rhythm. They are all nice, but the e-lady has a very nice rounded sound and a bit more of like a “rotation” effect and mids, the way you had it set.

Thank you! The Deluxe and E-Lady is smoother sounding and blends better with high gain effects like the Muff. The Mattress and Flanger, like the original 1976 Mistress, has more character, which makes the effect unique compared to other flangers but it's perhaps a more required sound too.

Just recently discovered Past Fx through your channel and was delighted to find they even have the ever-growing Spectrum collection dedicated to Mr Gilmour, among their other fine pedals. Imagine my surprise when I ordered a TD-Y to find that Verlie from Past FX builds them just up the road from me in Brisbane Australia! :)). I think my next purchase will be the Mattress, I think it absolutely slays the newer EHX Mistresses. Thanks for all your helpful reviews and advice, I love your channel and website! For my money, the Matress sounds the best and is the most versatile in this video. Nails the Gilmour tones but I use mine subtly for nearly everything. @gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes it has a volume drop but not nearly as much as the original Mistress. I think the main issue with the E-Lady is that the top end is rolled off significantly so the drop is more perceived as you'll lose top when it's engaged. I've used a 1999 Deluxe since I bought it new in 99 so I'm so used to it but you could loop it with a booster or volume mixer. Still though, I think the best way to deal with it is to accept the volume drop as part of the Mistress' nature.

I own the Mattress and the Retro Sonic. Both are very nice, and i agree the Mattress is definitely brighter. For my setup (Strat/Marshall) the Retro Sonic sounds better to my ears because of the extra thickness, but i can see how the Mattress could be better with a darker guitar or amp. As a side note, i also have the PastFX Reticon, and this is a beautifully lush flanger which also sounds great - a little thicker than the RetroSonic.

Unfortunately my E-Lady broke. 😥 I was only using that sound occasionally so have chosen not to replace it with anything until I really need it. I have a BF-3, a couple of phasers, several chorus pedals, and more univibes than is probably healthy so I'm not missing that specific flanger tone. At least not yet. 😎 Nice demo as always. Hi Bjorn, i hope you can see my comment. I've started playing guitar again after playing keyboard for years, and wanted to get myself a "jazz-fusion" inspired pedalboard. Gain wise i have a powerboost clone (that i had from my Gilmour yeahs hehe) a mooer overdrive (ts9) and i wanted to get a old MXR Distortion+. I wanted to get a modulation pedal to get watery tones for my leads. Got myself a boss ce2w but it doesn't give me the sound i want. So i guessed i'd return to flanger because, as gilmour uses it, it sounds more than a deep chorus rather than a jet flange. The real question is, do you think the mooer E lady might pair well with pedals like the Mooer overdrive and the MXR Distortion+? Thank you beforehand.

TIP: everyone seems to have a stereo modeler pedal: run effect and direct singnal at the same time left right. you get nice pseudoacoustic stereoeffects on both ears. now put the cheap clone after the mistresses direct out: uhhhhh, stereo mistress heaven! when i was using it live i had a booster behind it to compensate for the slight volume drop. sad i´ll have t0 give her back... what a flightdeck of a pedal. still in love.

“Gotta admit, I am a little bit confused”, because even if I like the Elastic Mattress more than the RS, this PastFx brand seems to have a strange story. Same fonts and conception of Buffalo Fx, which disappeared after the reticon-based flanger deposits disappearance; then, after they disappeared in the darkness, this PastFx brand came to light, with similar pedals, fonts and graphics. Also this Elastic Mattress looks a lot like the RS, to me. Really Don’t know, albeit to my ears the PastFx sounds the best in all the demo I listened to.

Not a mystery. After Buffalo capitulated, many pedal enthusiasts enquired if PastFX could make clones of the Buffalo pedals (which were already improved clones). PastFX already had their own line of retro style pedals and seemed like the ideal maker to take up the challenge. They’re unrelated to Buffalo.

They're all good. But, to be honest, I think the Mooer sounded the best, then the Retro Sonic, and then the Mattress.

I have the V3 Elastic Mattress and also the newer version of the Retro-sonic Flanger. In comparison the Retro-sonic is far superior in sound. The V3 Elastic Matress is so thin and bright, and it affects the dry signal too when using the blend knob. And the stereo outputs are out of phase, which means it sounds terrible unless you get another device to fix the phase issue. Retro-sonic is the better choice

It’s important to note that all Retro-Sonic Flanger pedals from serial number 400 up are tuned to allow more highs, resulting in a brighter tone. So it would probably bring the comparison between it and the Past FX pedal even closer.

While it is always possible that your inferences about the sonic differences between the pedals *are* accurate, when the tolerances of capacitors (that play a significant role in setting the overall bandwidth) come into play, I am often skeptical about whether inferences about a *single* example of a given pedal can be reliably generalized to ALL other pedals of that particular model/brand. If ten examples of each pedal all have the same sound characteristics, then we can have confidence in the conclusions drawn. But such KZfaq "shootouts" - and this one is not any different than the hundreds and hundreds available on KZfaq - are often based on a single pedal of a given model. Again, this is absolutely *NOT* to suggest any bias or deception on *anyone's* part. It's a question of drawing *confident* and *reliable* inferences about a particular product in the face of what can be unit-to-unit variation in component values. A little over 15 years ago, Mike Matthews gave an interview to a business magazine, and stated that if one took any four consecutively made Big Muffs off the assembly line in the '70s, they would all sound different. Now, tolerances have probably been shrunk in the 40 years since, yielding greater consistency. But even if capacitors went from +/-20% of stated value down to +/-5%, when considering the number of bandwidth-setting caps in a pedal, that still leaves room for variation. The challenge is to be able to say, with confidence, what is ALWAYS true of a particular model of pedal, and not just the one you happen to have. Not a criticism. Just a source of risk for the consumer. Were it the case that pedal-makers hand-selected components to have identical values, that would be one thing. But the reality is that a pedal-maker orders X units of a given component from the distributor, and assumes they are equivalent. Any hand-selection involved would increase labour and overall production costs, so it tends not to be done (with the possible exception of germanium transistors).

I think you're missing the point. Of course these clones are based on one or a few original pedals that often sounded very different to each other. A clone of a vintage pedal is probably more a clone of a sound, rather than a accurate circuit. In this video I'm doing a comparison between three current Electric Mistress style pedals and I think that these are much more consistent than vintage gear. KZfaq will compress, I use certain gear and I play in a certain way. You will not be able to get the same tones as I do with these pedals but you get an idea of how they sound and how they compare to eachother.

@@gilmourishofficial As a long-time measurement guy, experienced survey designer/analyst and long-time friend of local Retro-Sonic maker Tim Larwill, I have no quarrel with the possibility that accurate reproductions of older pedals that were a little different in their design, or were identical but modified slightly for recent repros, can sound purposely different from each other. The Retro-Sonic *might* have a little less top end than the PastFx pedal as a matter of choice to keep clock noise or hiss out. That MIGHT be the case. But strong inferences about what will always be true of ALL units of a given product/model will require one of two things, and sometimes both: 1) multiple examples of each product to demonstrate *consistent* traits, 2) examination of the electronic design/circuit to note differences in component values. That is not a slag of *any* sort against yourself. You join a very long line of equally sincere and well-intentioned KZfaq pedal comparisons that also construe a single pedal of a particular model/brand as reflective of every single unit, or construe the location of an indicator line on a control knob as being a 100% accurate reflection of the actual electronic setting internally. My concern is with the inferences that *viewers* draw from such demonstrations, rather than the honesty of or accuracy of what the demonstrator hears and wishes to illustrate. I am absolutely confident you hear the differences you hear, and have presented them honestly. I'm just less confident that viewers can calibrate the confidence they place in such videos, whether here or elsewhere. Some understand sampling theory, but the majority seem to treat anecdotes as equivalent to a census. When I used to teach statistics, I would hand out envelopes to 2 students in the front row, and ask them to pull 4 slips of paper out of their envelope and write the numbers on those slips of paper on the blackboard. I would ask the class "Are these two sets of numbers - if they were two sets of research data - similar or different?", and they'd offer a response. I'd ask the students to draw 4 more slips of paper, then 4 more, and finally the last 4 (16 in an envelope). When the list of all 16 numbers was finally revealed, they would see that each envelope actually contained the identical numbers/data, and that what appeared very different at the start wasn't really, once the whole "population" of each envelope was considered. The size of the sample is always important. I don't expect KZfaq product demonstrators, or any musician for that matter, to be statisticians. I'm just saying that it can be risky to draw strong conclusions about products from single instances.
