Electric compressor motor that isn't starting by itself. Quick and easy no cost repair.
If the motor Hums, buzzes, or trips the breaker this will generally solve it.

I do try to be considerate of people's time when I'm doing the final edit on my videos, but I'll admit it's an art and a delicate balance between providing enough detail and knowing when to cut out redundancy (or stupid parts). I'm definitely still in the infant phase of content creation though, so I'll take my lumps on the comments, if needed. For real though, my ultimate goal is content (even if long sometimes) that people can refer to with their own projects, plus not be too awful to watch.

Very nice. Got the original motor or my Atlas Bandsaw, (Model 912, about 65 years old), and it's doing exactly what you're describing. KZfaq is the place you go when you didn't listen to your dad enough!

This was the perfect fix. I bought my Sandborn air compressor and motor 35 years ago. I was having 'hard start' problems, motor humming, buzzing on startup only. I was considering a new $150 replacement motor, but thanks to this video I fixed the problem in 15 minutes with a little piece of sandpaper. My compressor now starts up like it was new again!

Botta Bing. Heya i gotta elect motor starts to spin but SLOW then stops. I tried yer method of helping it by hand but it wont take off n run. Same fix?

I'm an electrician, your description of how a centrifugal switch operates is text book, very well done on a clear simple explanation that totally non electrical folk should be able to understand. You also show how easy it is to save machinery from the scrapper with just 30 minutes of time and a bit of DIY. My only suggestion would be to include the unplugged mains lead in camera shot so people can see clearly the machine is disconnected and safe, I have found over the years a couple of mis wired house sockets where the return wire is switched leaving the machine 'hot' even when turned off. Just dropped by to say thank you for the insightful video. Exact same problem on my 2hp motor, same fix, fired right up after countless times humming. My only issue was getting the cover off, set of pliers, a firm grip, ever being so careful and it came off. Life safer!

"update " after watching your video again..I took it back apart,found that my wire going to my circuit breaker was rubbing on my motor finns,causing a short..in my hurry to put it back together,in didn't pay attention to the wires,in tie rapped them to the housing vents...THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO SAVED ME 500.00 BUCKS!!!!

Old motor started buzzing and rotating very slowly in reverse direction. I found and watched your video and followed the steps you've so clearly described. The winding contacts were a bit of a devil to get to, to clean but after blowing all the dust out and reassembling.......BINGO it starts and runs perfectly. Thanks for the really informative video. Professor on the compressor. You know Quincy, Illinois is the compressor capital of the world, right? All the major players hail from there. Employees leave...start their own biz across the street etc lol kinda like Solingen, Germany was the blade capital back in the day. The take away is u 🎸 and so does Quincy and everyone else who never ceases to hone and share their craft. It's becoming rare to see. I got Much 💘 and appreciation for that

Thank you so much for the video! We’ve had an old air compressor in the barn that hasn’t been used in many years - because the motor “buzzes” but won’t turn over. I watched your video, went to the barn and pulled the end cap off the old motor. I cleaned the points - making sure they made proper contact with the motor off - and checked that the points fully disengaged by pushing the clutch in. I reassembled it and - Yahtzee! - it works! Thanks for the direction and motivation to make it happen!

Well, I am clueless about electric motors. this video helped me take apart my bandsaw electric motor, clean out the TONS of sawdust and sand out the contact points, etc. Put it back together and it works like a charm. So to some (me) this video was totally worthwhile. Thanks for posting the video.

Thanks for the video. I had recently been given an old Sears Roebuck 4" wood jointer and the original motor would just hum unless I gave it a quick spin to help it get going. I watched your video and cracked the case open, dumped out a cord of sawdust from the 1950's, took a file to all the contacts, and lubed up the clutch like you said and she started right up!!! I've probably tossed 20 motors in the trash over the years, DOH!!! Thanks again and keep up the good work.

to get it in your room is it possible if we can go back out for dinner tomorrow morning if you're still the the guy you would like for me and the other guy who too will I be home and will let them get the vaccine if we have the time and then I guess he can come back up with them but I don't want them coming in tomorrow and we can do that and then we'll be back tomorrow but I guess they have them on Monday so they are waiting to go out for it to put them out tomorrow but I think I have them tomorrow and they have a truck going and then they are not staying there till tomorrow but we are headed there right there will you have to put the trailer and tires you need them put them together correct right and when we put ours in and then I will call him tomorrow but I will have them let Pam put ours back and put ours back and they just want it put the dogs and chairs and roads and roads have to have ours and I will have him call him but we need to get them put Cindy he's not staying the day we just got the paperwork we got it went well we have plenty and we have plenty but ours timeroads up the house they put the one out from

@sixtyfiveford thanks so much for your video. You saved me $250 on a new spa motor. My motor would hum like yours then the auto thermal shutoff would kick in a few seconds later and the motor would click and shut off. I checked the start capacitor and it tested at about at 56 micro farads so that was not the problem as this was within the acceptable range. The motor also made the same humming noise with the capacitor disconnected. I have a model BN51 A.O. Smith 2 speed 3hp spa motor and I drained my hot tub and disconnected the pump and noticed that the contacts for the on position were kind of welded together. I was able to pull them apart and sand the contacts just like you did in the video and the motor and pump work good as new! Thanks again I owe you one!!!

Saved Big Bucks on my 35 year old Sanborn air compressor with a Century motor... Unloader on Pressure Switch was sticking and caused motor to overheat kicking out thermal. Over time the points on the start switch also became a bit non-conductive. Oiled the unloader valve, cleaned starter points and runs like new. No doubt the life expectancy of the motor will be diminished due to the overheating, but for a garage compressor will occasional use it should provide air for years to come. Thanks!

I was troubleshooting the hell out of my compressor. I don't know a ton about electrical issues, but I tried everything. I was about to give it away to someone who could actually fix it, but this saved me. Thank you. Although I'm not good with electronics, I am good at fixing things. And not fixing this compressor was really bumming me out because it seems so simple. But it's handled, which strangely is almost more rewarding than having my compressor working again! Thank you for posting this video!

I was in the middle of a pallet wood project on my lathe when I was not able to restart the motor. I suspect the problem is dust that got in there. Will open up the motor and follow you instructions. You gave me the confidence to play with something electrical, I will leave the motor disconnected for 24 hours before doing anything. Thanks for the video, you may have saved me an expensive lathe motor repair.

Check the reset switch(if it has one) as this is the most common thing to trip on a sawdust filled motor.

Replaced starting capacitor and this did not fix problem. I was very close to spending $225 for a replacement motor when I saw your video and you suggesting problem was with bad contacts. Did what you said, fixed the problem and saved me some money...thank you!

Hi sixtyfiveford.I had all the knowledge I got from your video and then I thought of first oiling the shaft of the motor and the pump by cleaning it thoroughly at first and giving it a go. Then I noticed a switch above the motor which contains the two capacitors.I pressed that switch and probably re set it in the process.I then took off the belt connecting the pump and motor and turned the motor a good 2 minutes manually and then put it on.It went beautifully. Did the cleaning of the pump as well and then same thing turned it a full 2 minutes along with spraying WD40. Then connected the pump and motor and it went beautifully. Went to work to town.Came back and tried it on again.It turns and feels like it wants t go.Turns over quite well but then after about 10 seconds the switch above the capacitors pops off and it stops.

+Tarsame Lal “sam” Tangri That is your built in circuit breaker. It can go bad and trip by itself easier than it should but generally it means the pump itself is too difficult to turn. Make sure the air pressure switch isn't trying to make the compressor pump too high of air pressure into the tank. It should be shutting off the electric motor at 125psi or so(maybe lower or higher depending on compressor)

Small xaw bench motor 50 years old plus. Just removed it and blown forty years of dust out of it. Cleaned up centrifugal switch Back into working order. (Stalled and humming 2 days ago) no capacitor required! Cheers mate happy days!

Im glad I found your video. Really helped me today. Ingersoll rep told me the service tech doesn't work 8n the motors just replaces the for 560 dollars! I only paid 1000 for the compressor. Made no sense to me so 7 fixed it myself. Saved my day sir, good lookin out

In addition to increasing the starting torque, the motor rotation direction is also determined by the start winding. To reverse the direction of rotation, swap over the two windings to the start winding!

Thanks for the vid. I'm troubleshooting an electric hydro pump for an automotive lift. I'm a pretty advanced mechanic (self proclaimed) but still so much I dont know. That realy makes it easier to understand what is going on inside the motor housing for an a/c motor.

That's a nice assortment of Fords. At the present I have a '59, '65, '66', '78 and a few newer ones. I need more space to accommodate my desire for more.

Not bad-Quincys usually use Baldor motors, but that didn't look like one. As far as cleaning the contacts-think points on one of your Fords. Those old point files are the best for that-and never ever grease the phenolic on the centrifical switch. PS-I own a electric motor repair shop. PSS Also have a '55 Caddy Ambulance, "71 Ranchero, '53 Studebaker and a '67 Firebird.

You sound confident in your ability,, might subscribe. I h ave fought with centrifugal induction motors alot. Usually washing machine and swamp cooler motors. Now however, its my 30yr old speed air two stage with a BALDOR,, very good if not the best built. I have almost the same set up. I took it apart twice already and it was a lot of trouble. Did all you describe already still no run, just hums and throws the reset or breaker. And no, its on the bench,, not on the compressor anymore

Gotta love the KZfaq helpers... Fantastic video, I'll give it a try. Thank you!! My compressor was stored over a yr and now starts very slow but then stops running within seconds. This sounds like it may be the issue? May be run capacitor? fwiw- If the motor is bad, although they're more expensive I always replace my motors with a Baldor brand. Worked most my life in plastics and all our machines big/small had Baldors, they are absolute brutes. We'd have operators locking grinders up weekly just to stand around doing nothing and the Baldors set there humming for 10-20+ minutes at a time before operators even tell us it stopped and we free up the grinder and off it runs just like new again. Amazing how tough they really are. I can remember replacing only one motor but that grinder was over 25 yrs old doing that all the time, it was there before I even started. Over 15yrs ago I used a Baldor as an attic fan motor in my old home to put an end to junk attic motor replacements every few yrs and I know its still used there today. It runs 9am to 9pm in summer 90-105 deg. Very tough! Thanks again for the video. Peace

I would turn the compressor over by hand a few times to make sure the pump is moving freely and not stuck.

Thanks for the tip! I was given an old 42" Heat Buster drum fan today and the motor has the same problem, hopefully it's not shorted out and just needs a cleaning.

Thanks. I'm good at lots of stuff. Very understandable and discusses things like I do. Down to earth in simple language. Looked like me when he goes .... a little grease would be good and dabs some off the rear bearing and onto the rubbing tabs. Thanks for the help.

Fixed my issue. I suspected this was the problem on my wood shaper that I picked up for free. The old owner said it would no longer start and he moved it to the back yard to rust away. Thankfully I got to it before it was beyond repair. I cleaned the whole thing up and when I fired the motor it just hummed. Not as loud as this one though. Anyway, I did the same thing you did here and it works flawlessly now. Thank you for your videos!

+sixtyfiveford I phrased that awkwardly. I meant to say that I suspected this was my problem but was unsure of what exactly to do. Quite serendipitously your video popped up in my subscriptions and I followed your video exactly. Doing this allowed me to fix the motor. Sorry if I was unclear earlier. Thanks again.

I looked at the photos at some of these videos and most everybody was talking about capacitors,the motor was struggling to start,sometime it would throw the fuse,but when it started,it would run until tank was full.So I decided to skip the capacitor test and go with the start switch first.Pulled the cover back,run a little contact file a few times between the contacts,oiled the centrifugal clutch shaft and put it all back.Flipped the on lever,and Hot Diggity dog,it never had started so easy and instantly before.It run smoother than a licked titty.Thank you,and didn’t cost me a penny.What I like about your video and others of this kind is ,I want to see how to fix it,to the point without too much unnecessary talk.Thanks again.

Great info! I never had one of those apart. My compressor is 220 but It has a very long recovery. It must be a one lunger. Love them vanup trucks.

The humming that you hear is NOT coming from the "start" winding but from the "run" windings which stay engaged all the time (as long as the pressure switch is calling for air). The "start" windings cannot be the source of the humming because the start switch is not passing current. So the start switch does not transfer power from the start windings to the run windings.

Pointers for this excellent video...Before you remove those through bolts that fasten the end bells to the stator body...mark the top of the end bells with witness marks, usually one dot punched on with a center punch on the shaft side end bell, and two dots on the other end bell, and do the same on the stator body. Align these marks together during reassembly and you wont have any through bolt issues. I use crocus cloth to clean contacts. Quincy compressors have an oil pump for pressure lubrication instead of a splash ring. They also have a gauge and a screw adjustment to set the pressure (all the ones I've worked on had them). That's the magic bullet they have.

I've heard of Crocus Cloth but have never used it nor seen it readily available. I assumed it was just finer emery cloth.

Sweet fix. If you can wire the motor for 240V you get less shop light dimming when the compressor kicks on. Plus they really kick on. Burn right through that start contact oxidization.
