I got the containers from the Toyota Detailers when I used to work there.
You can go to any Car Detailer shop and ask for the empty ones. Most just throw them away.
PLEASE READ WHY MY METHOD WORKS:
The tranny pump sucks oil from the pan and pushed oil to the cooler. On the return the oil is dumped into the pan, not sucked into the pan. This is why the gravity feed did not work so good.
There is no force that is sucking the fluid back into the transmission. It is all being pushed into the transmission. By removing the push part by disconnecting the transmission out line into a old fluid bucket, I have to use a pump to replace that push pressure, which this video is showing by pushing the new fluid.
FLUID FLOW
Normal operation:
Transmission pushes out to cooler, cooler keeps getting pushed back to transmission
Gravity assist:
Transmission push out to bucket /continuity broken/ From new fluid bucket, there is none (or not enough) gravity assist pressure to cooler thus nothing going back to transmission.
Pump method:
Transmission push out to bucket /continuity broken/push new fluid to cooler via pump, keeps getting pushed back to transmission

thanks for taking the time to post this video.. I've been doing the same thing on the "no dipstick" toyotas with a few small differences. 1.) i rig up a remote switch to the pump so i can turn it on and off while i am in the car. This allows me to stop and start the pump at pretty much the same time as the tranny pump. 2.) Before i begin the flush, i drain pan fluid and gently blow out return line from cooler to the pan, then use the pump to pump the exact same amount of new atf into the pan. (without the motor running) this fills the pan with fresh fluid for the tranny pump to pick up before the flush begins and makes for a better flush. 3.) I start engine in N and the pump at the same time..then cycles thru all the gears while engine and pump are running.. a few seconds in each gear. 4.) I position the waste oil pail so i can see it while i am in the car..i mount the good fluid pail to a pole (like an IV bag) so i can see it while im in the car as well. both the new fluid and the waste pail have 1/2 gallon indication marks on them so i can observe even drain and filling while i'm in the car. 5.) I use Valoline Max life full synthetic on most all, including the Toyotas calling for WS fluid.. the Valoline atf is a much better and less expensive fluid than Toyota WS. other notes.. 6.) i typically flush beyond the capacity of the tranny.. for instance is the tranny takes a maximum of 13 qts i'll flush 15 qts in total.. (but always have 13 in the tranny at any given time) this assures a real good flush and you can see it and prove it to your self by observing the color of the fluid in the fill and drain lines. I over fill slightly.. and then run the fluid check at the correct temperature (this procedure is outlined elsewhere on the web) and allow a little to drain out to the proper level. if you think you overfilled too much..no bigger just open the level check plug and let some out.. myth debunking... - "this method will not hurt the transmission".. not ture.. the pump is just pump fresh oil into the pan thru the cooler return line... just don't hook it up backwards and try to pump into the output line - "you have to use toyota WS fluid".. not true.. Valoline Max Life full synthetic is compatible with trannys that call for WS Fluid tips... the first time you use the pump.. flush the pump with new clean fluid into the waste pail.. the pumps are shipped with crappy oil ..flush that out.. if just takes about 2 seconds of run time

Angel, I am the one with the 2002 sienna like yours. I did as you advised. It had never been changed in 209K miles. I know, I was afraid of what is said about high mileage transmissions. Here is what I did. Dropped the pan and put on new gasket and filter and cleaned off magnets and pan. Put about 4 qts in and drove for 3 weeks. Took off plug and put in 3 more qts. Drove for about 3 months and undid both plugs (my wife’s grandfather told me about 2nd plug. This let out about 4.5 qts and it was dark, like a mud. I guess from cleaning off things? Today it shifted great and that 2-3 gear was pretty smooth. Van felt like it was gliding; I know it was new fluid for front axle due to being joined. Thank you for the advice. I now have 212.5K on mine

Unfortunately in here in Chile it is very difficult to find reliable designers who are honest. That is why it is so important for me to know these things. Thank you very much, I hope to continue watching your videos and please give my regards to your daughter is very charming, I hope to share my experiences with my two children just like you.

Could you list and/or provide any links to for fittings used to connect your system together (Other than the pump, pliers and container you did list)? Also, do you think you could use a 5 gallon bucket as the source for clean fuel instead of that container ? Also, if your transmission has a dipstick, could you just pour the clean fluid down it, or would this be to slow ?

If you were to just use the electric pump without the engine on, how would it pump out the fluid from the torque converter? Thank you for the comment.

I plan on doing mine almost exactly this way after watching this video. I have the pump, a GM trans cooler to hose barb adapter, just need fluid. Thinking Valvoline Dexron VI Full Synthetic..$40/case 6 shipped from Amazon..prime. My 4L60E is pre-Dexron VI..but VI is backwards compatible. I have the adapter to make less messy..GM has steel lines to cooler. He did it right..it won't gravity feed because the return line just "falls" into the pan. In normal operation, fluid is pumped (pressured) from trans, through cooler, and pressured through to pan. One thing I may do differently is suck fluid out of the pan through the dipstick tube using a vacuum pump I use for bleeding brakes and a vacuum trap. This will empty the pan. I may or may not drop the pan and do filter, clean, and magnet. Then fill the pan with fresh fluid to operating level, THEN start this process. That way I'm minimizing mixing new & old since we determined the pump will pump fluid that just "falls" into the pan..and mixes with the old. I have to pump out through dipstick tube because my GM pan has no drain plug/bung. This will be a good opportunity for me to add a weld-in drain bung if I do drop the pan. I don't trust the thread type bungs. Idk though because dropping the pan is a PITA on mine..especially when full. Think uncontrollable ATF waterfall. Good job. Thanks for the inspiration.

good but you could've topped up the fluid through dipstick as you were flushing the old fluid out with the car running and just waited until the fluid became pretty(new) handy little oil pump though
@FixItAngel

Then that would be mixing new fluid with the old. That's why you said, until fluid became "pretty(new)"
@johnsmith-uh1gs
@johnsmith-uh1gs 7 жыл бұрын
So how is it that this method does not intermix new with the old fluid? For those who think gravity feed does not work... 1.) Take the outflow hose off the transmission, and put a 10-foot extension on it... route that extension up and over the passenger door mirror so that gravity keeps the fluid in the hose instead of running out)... drop the open end of that hose in a 5-gallon bucket, and duct tape it to the side of the bucket so it doesn't jump out and douse your driveway. 2.) Take another 5-gallon bucket and drill/tap/TRV a bung into the bottom of it 3.) Connect another 10-foot extension hose to that bung, and place the bucket on the hood (on a towel if you have nice paint). Duct tape it down, too, for the same reasons stated above. 4.) Connect the other end of this extension hose to where the inflow hose connects to the transmission. 5.) Use a tube-clamp or a set of vice grips to clamp off the extension hose near the bucket. 6.) Fill the bucket with tranny fluid (Walmart has it in 1-gallon containers for cheap)... you want to use at least one-and-a-half times what the owners manual specs for your transmission to account for what's in the hoses. Me, I'd just drop the dime and put in two-and-a-half times the specified quantity to insure a thorough flush. 7.) Remove the pinch clamp or vise grips (this will start a slow gravity-cycle of the fluid), then start the vehicle, and cycle it through its gears. Keep an eye on the bucket fluid level and shut the vehicle off when you run out of feed fluid. 8.) Disconnect and drain the extension lines and quickly reattach the factory cooler lines -- any fluid you lose while doing this can be topped off shortly. 9.) Restart the vehicle, run it through its gears again, then top off the tranny fluid through the filler or dipstick. 10.) Cap off the 5 gallon bucket of used fluid and take it to a recycle depot. 11.) Wipe out the inside of the feed bucket, throw some paper towels in the bottom, then label and bag all the extension lines, clamps, etc. that you used, and put them in the bucket, too. Cap off this bucket and put in in the garage for the next time you want to do this task.

The big cap opening @3:07 was the vent, that's where the fill spout would come out of the cap when used as a gas jug (there's no rubber spout in it just the cap). He used the vent portion of the jug to get the fluid out. Just wow, use your head folks..

You dont have to do all that , just find the line that goes in and out of the auto tranny cooler . Its most likely in the radiator.. from the line that goes in the radiator take it out and put it in a empty 5 quart jug to catch the fluid coming out of the tranny. The out part of the line that goes in the tranny just put it in a new quart of atf. Simply just start the car and watch until what comes out is really pink. All you have to do is contiued feeding fluid ..same amount in as the amount that comes out.

Thanks for watching. So how much trans fluid do you take out with the extractor? What about the fluid in the torque converter?
@WizzRacing
@WizzRacing 2 жыл бұрын
@@FixItAngel I have a 10 liter Manual pump extractor..You can use any size you want..They make them in several sizes. Along with the hoses needed to get in them tight spots.. If the TC has no drain plug. You have to do what you did. Remove the hose off the trans cooler or radiator and pump the first few qts out...While blocking the return hose.. This gets 95% of it out...Then force the new fluid in. It will push the rest out. Some cars like the one you did. Don't pump to good. Once the system is open.. Why it had trouble pumping fluid out. They just seem to dribble on me.. So I force feed the fluid in with the extractor. Just dump the fluid in it. Then reverse from suction. To pumping...They were not designed to work that way. It was meant to empty it..I just make sure it's nice and clean inside the extractor..If your real touchy about it. Install an inline filter to make sure... I just got tired of getting oil all over my ass. While on hot concrete in Texas in the summer. So I bought one for oil changes. Transmission. Coolant removal. Rear ends etc... As I do a ton on them all week.. And I'm supposed to be retired..I work more now. Then I did with a full time job. As nobody can stay on top of all the new Computers. That people toss parts at. Only to find out after they spent $1500.00 for an AC job.. The coolant temp sensor was bad. So it cuts off the AC to prevent damaging the engine..I do them all the time..Even Car shops bring me their vehicles to repair.. It's crazy and getting worse. As most vehicles have 50+ Computers on them..Just fixed one today. They tossed an Alternator, Starter, Battery at it for a Charging issue.. The throttle body was dirty.. So the Idle speed was showing 30%.. It should read 0...Cleaned it out good. Did a relearn.. Problem solved. For a can of Throttle body cleaner and a nylon tooth brush....

This method is slight variation than what I do. Little more work and hoses but a lot more efficient old fluid change. I usually just drain via drain bolt on pan. Fill in dipstick what I took out..then unhook return cooler line and attach clear hose, turn car on drain until the fluid starts to sputter. Then fill again via dipstick. Repeat until I get about 10 quarts in or the stream that comes out the cooler line becomes red

that method seems plausible. But how can you be sure that your removing old fluid from torque converter and rest of the tranny and not just draining the sump of clean fluid every time. technically wouldnt you have to go through the gears to ensure that the fluid is circulating properly? and if so, would there be ample time to do so each time without running the pump dry?

in order for it to gravity feed, you'd need the hose inside the container, at the bottom of the container-not simply oring clamped to a nipple on the side like that. That quart you put in 'cold' will expand. The cost you see on your ticket is the price of 'convenience'. Not everyone has two large jugs, hoses, clamps, drain pan, time to hook it all up, get filthy in the process and hope they don't burn up their transmission in the process. So yes, the three 'T's'...'Time'....'Tools'...and 'Tallent'....if you got them, do it yourself. Good video though.

Absolutely. Bucket end of the Hose needs to be to the bottom of bucket and pre loaded to begin the siphon...as long as you keep the outfeed end lower than the bucket end, it should gravity feed no prob... Then use the clip to control the flow.

Thanks for the video... I have the exact same 4Runner, and I had problems last week. It was working fine in the morning one day, then at noon, it wouldn't work anymore; on cold, it would work fine, but after 10 seconds or so it wouldn't advance anymore. Do you think it needs a service? Also.... do the old and new oil mix each other? or you just stop when the top container is empty? I could do this myself. PS: I believe the "top" container needs to "breathe" in order to gravity feed the transmission oil. Thanks

Very nice video Angel. I am thinking to use your way to flush. My only concern... can that oil pump flow rate keep up with the transmission sent flow in order not to run your transmission dry in the process ?
@FixItAngel

Hi Terry, Thank you. The flush took less than 3 minutes for the old fluid to come out and the new in. So I don't think it would dry out the transmission in the process. I took the chance and it worked. I have been doing this with other cars for the past 4 years.

Use the pump like you did the second time that works but you are still doing half a job. What I do is disconnect the return back to the trans from the cooler as you did. Vehicle on level ground. Start the engine and watch the old oil coming out of the cooler to the point the old oil starts to splutter and turn the engine off. Fill the trans with fresh oil through the dip stick tube like normal and start the engine again but this time RUN IT THROUGH all the gears at idle. About a second in each position is all you need. Put it back in park. Turn engine off when clean oil starts to splutter. Do this till your oil is clean.You now have a trans with a almost empty oil pan. I drop the pan clean it good and replace the filter and refit the pan with new gasket or RTV for ATF. Reconnect all hoses and fill the trans with correct oil and the right amount. Run it through the gears as you correct the level then take it for a drive and get the trans hot and recheck and adjust if needed. NEVER LET THE TRANS PUMP RUN with a low flow of oil like you did before you used the pump. The pump is still supplying oil to the bearings, thrust washers, clutches and the likes with the engine running so the 10 minutes with a low flow was not a good idea.

When the fluid is coming out so slow you are very low on trans fluid and risking damage. First refill the transmission with the same quantity that you drained. Then disconnect the line from the trans to the trans cooler. Start the engine and let it run briefly; until about 1- 1.5 quarts is pumped out. Then add that quantity back into the transmission. Keep repeating until the fluid comes out clean. Then drive the car around for a while to get the fluid up to operating temperature. Then check the fluid level and adjust to fill.
@FixItAngel
@FixItAngel 8 жыл бұрын
+John Ferguson So you are mixing new trans oil with the used? Sounds counterintuitive. I have yet to experience a damaged trans from my method. The fluid is low but never without fluid. But what you said, "risking damage". I will take my chances rather than mixing dirty fluid with new.
@johnferguson7235
@johnferguson7235 8 жыл бұрын
Fix It Angel You will never get 100% of the old fluid out of the transmission no matter what you do. The damage to the pump can occur when running for extended periods with very low fluid levels. The transmission won't immediately fail. It's the long term durability that can be compromised. In addition, you can whip up the fluid like a milkshake. The anti-foaming agents in the fluid can only do so much. You can get air bubbles on friction surfaces that can cause localized friction and wear on critical components. Toyota red is the same fluid used in my Volvo; which has an Aisin (Toyota/Lexus) transmission. It uses Mobil 3309 (JAS 3309). Which is like Dexron but with added anti-oxidation and anti-foaming additives. It also has added pressure modifiers to protect gears. It is like super Dexron and it lasts much longer at very little additional cost.

Did the same thing with my son's 1996 T100 but we did NOT use a Pump. all we did was take off one cooler line the one that supply's the cooler with fluid . a piece of clear hose in a jug . start the Truck and run till the oil flow slows down in the jug. Don't let it run dry . shut the Truck off and measure how much is in the Jug and pour fresh fluid in . repeat until it runs clean in the jug and done his truck has 270,00 mile's on it with the original Trans
