Doing a power steering flush on a 2001 Toyota 4Runner.
My friend had her car inspected at a Toyota Dealer in Henderson, Nevada. One of the recommendations was a power steering flush because it was not the right fluid in it, they said it was a different color. It takes Dexron III, Automatic Transmission Fluid.
So she wanted me to do a power steering flush withe the right fluid.

Or...you could use the Toyota procedure which involves no drilling and fabrication or running the engine. Just turn the wheel lock to lock with the engine off and it will force the fluid out of the system. Just add fluid to the reservoir and you'll be flushed after 1.5 quarts. Retired technician here.

You Do Not need to start the engine. The fluid pumps through the system just by turning lock to lock. Do not agitate the fluid by running motor and jack up front to reduce stress on the pump. So much easier doing it manually

Awesome video angel. Those 4Runner man they are bullet proof vehicles. They are built to last. Sometimes you show us(the viewers) how many miles the vehicle has when your working on them. strange that you didn't show us this time. Really curious on how many miles that 4Runner has. Keep up the good work angel on showing us how to work on our vehicle and save money. Plus don't listen to what that just is saying. You have to look at the bright side. Look at how subscribers you have and all the positive feedback you are getting back. Respect.

I used a brake bleed kit to the hose flowing into the reservoir and vacuum the system that way while adding new oil to the reservoir. I plugged the reservoir inlet valve with a ear plug so the new oil won’t flow out while vacuuming the system.

You don't need start the motor... Just turn the key to the ACC position, jack the front up so the tires are an inch off the ground and turn the wheels lock to lock to cycle fluid through the system without running your 300 dollar pump dry or spraying ATF all over everything.

Lock to lock as in when the streering wheel locks after you rotate it a bit?
@cameronnorton5898
@cameronnorton5898 2 жыл бұрын
@@armandosoria7993 Naw, you have to have your key in the ACC position so the steering wheel doesn't lock. I mean cylcling the steering wheel to it's fullest travel to the left and then the right. If you wanna see exactly what I'm talking about, watch the the power steering flush video from a channel called 1ROAD. He uses a Chevy Suburban to show the engine off flush process, but it will 100% work on your 3rd gen 4Runner. I know because I've done it to mine and it worked wonders.

@cameronnorton5898
@cameronnorton5898 2 жыл бұрын
@@armandosoria7993 Yeah. Another great video that helped me do the job was Timmy The Toolman's power steering flush video. He actually uses the 3rd gen 4Runner, so you can see all the parts you need to adress and how, his only mistake if you ask me, was running the engine. The reason leaving the engine off is better, is that it's almost impossible to fill the pump reservior faster than it pumps the fluid out if you are running your engine. In the video you can see it sprays out the whole tank in like 1 second when he sarts the car, thus running the pump dry. Letting a high pressure pump run dry can be damaging, and will cause you to have to wait for air to bubble out of the sytem later. Doing the same process with the car off, you can control how much fluid is pumped just by simply spinning your steering wheel. The system cycling back and forth with the engine off genereates more than emough pressure to flush the sytem beautifully, and you can easily keep up with the rate of flow when filling the reservior with fresh fluid as to not run your expensive power steering parts dry. Also, no mess. Just a nice trickle into your drain bucket when you turn the wheel.

@@cameronnorton5898 Agreed. And that's why Angel had 4 or 5 quarts of free atf sitting there for immediate refilling. He probably was looking for as high a pressure as possible in this flush - thinking that the higher the flush pressure, the cleaner the system.
