Electric Start Predator 224 Mega Moto with Ryobi Power

2 жыл бұрынMAX Performance Predator 224cc… In today’s episode of DIY Willy, I want to try and make my Predator 224 work with an electric starter kit from V Power Equipment and a 18v Ryobi battery. Does it work? I don’t know. Let’s put it to the test. I know this video is long but I really wanted to show the install from start to finish. I hope you all will watch till the end. So follow along as we make history with the Mega Moto once again making it just that much better than the rest…
I need to mention that the kit didn’t bolt on right out of the box as I had hoped. I actually used a 212 Non-Hemi Flywheel, plastic fan and short pull start cup to make it work. From my research the Hemi kit should have worked but as you’ll see in the video the flywheel taper was to big causing the flywheel to sit too close to the engine block, stopping the crank from turning.

Great job! I'm going to do the same thing with my Tillotson electric starter using a Dewalt 20v battery. Maybe play around with a zener diode or adjustable voltage regulator so the battery can power the headlight (LED) and tail light while getting a tickle charge.

Hey Willy, I just got this kit for my Predator 224cc. Everything was good. They should have included 4 of those spaces. I got 4 nice spaces from Ace for the modified case cover. Pretty happy with everything so far. Thanks for the great video that helped me so much since my generic kit didn't include any instructions.

Hello David, So when you say case cover.. Are you referring to the blower housing and pull start? Good choice for a battery. I will probably change from the RYOBI to a regular battery. I plan on building this engine again and I don’t think the current battery will have enough juice. Do you have any pix posted anywhere to see your build? Have you done anything to the 224?

Next time you get a mini bike with the electric start and is coming up short on space to put a battery use a RC car battery 6 cell they work excellent only thing is you need to get a RC car battery charger but those things can mount pretty much anywhere!!

Great suggestion! I chose the RYOBI battery because I have plenty of them and multiple chargers. The set up worked great. It could be done with any small tool battery and the correct adapter. Thanks for watching!!

Nice. But everyone needs to know that the 224 uses a stroker clone crankshaft. No Pred 212 parts fit on that crankshaft. If the flywheel you used is a Pred 212 it may seem to fit and should work but is not correct. The starter kit to order for the 224 would be one for a clone (196). Again, the 224's crankshaft has a clone flywheel taper. And you would still have to use a clone or 212 fan and starter cup if you want to use their blower housing. The 224 muffler is the best of this type ever made for a utility engine because it has a 7/8" ID inlet. You may be able to run a larger jet and open type air filter yet keep the stock muffler on. I may try that on mine with 34 or 35 jet.

You da man Willy! First electric start 224 I've seen! I ordered an electric start kit from Amazon "MOFANS" brand. It's supposed to fit a GX200 but it said specifically it "will not fit the hemi engine". I've not tried it out on the 224 because it's supposed to be for my generator but now I'm wondering what the taper will look like. I was planning on testing flywheel fit between these engines but I put it on the back burner until I get some of the other stuff done. I'm about 3 weeks behind on everything! Beautiful work Sir. Much respect!

Thank you that means a lot! That is the kit I originally ordered from Amazon for my 212 in my golf cart. For the 224 I ordered the Hemi kit and we’ll you saw that didn’t fit but the gx200 kit fit perfectly. Really like the convenience of the electric start and the battery should power lights later down the road. Again man thanks for watching!!

I just tore down my 224 to build. Never ran it but I can confirm mine had some wiggle to it before I popped it off so it was definitely loose on the taper

Yes that’s what I’ve heard that the flywheels are loose on the taper. Retorque it should solve the problem.

Take the stock flywheel to a machine shop, have then either make a starter ring gear, or remove the ring gear from the other flywheel, just be sure the flywheel will can still be engaged by the starter, as in the Bendix travels out far enough/ the ring gear is at the same location! And as for the charging. I'd get one of those tiny alternators from a small tractor, put a pulley on the front, I'd get two small 6v batteries, mount one on each side of the frame, or stack them on top of the starter in front,

Hello James, The flywheel is for a GX200/clone taper and fits the 224 perfectly. I will be changing to the billet flywheel with ring gear which will not support charging coils. I have already thought about an alternator but this frame is too small for accessory drive. The RYOBI fits and works perfectly for now. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching.

Use valve lapping paste to match the taper in the flywheel to the crankshaft. before bolting it up. Make sure to completely clean off paste after lapping, or it will wreck the crank seal. I bought an aftermarket flywheel from China with 3 magnets, and the runout on the face was 0.125", and the OD runout was 0.010" It took 4 long days of scraping, lapping, scraping and lapping, until I had it running out 0.002" on the face, and 0.0005" on the diameter. The smoothest running Predator 212, ever. The non hemi Predator is made well, with good quality control, but the hemi factory uses guesswork, and bad witchcraft, instead of QC. Many of those hemi engines won't even pull over because the connecting rod hits the camshaft, or the engine case. They don't even pull them over, just stuff them in a box, and let the customer figure it out. Junk, though I can't say the same for the non hemi, night and day difference.

Also, rotate the pull start 120 degrees clockwise. Remove the 3 screws. Easy!

This is so neat! I keep watching your video and I am sure I will try to make my next 224 Predator electric start! I also watch your video that you add the $$ ARC elec start flywheel and other parts - wow hope my wife doesn't catch onto this? Haha... Hello, Glad you liked it. It is fun and I really like just turning the key to hear it run. It can get pricey but worth it in the end. Just make sure that when you decide to do it, you get the right kit. I bought the wrong kit first but luckily I had the right flywheel from another build that work with the kit. From DIY performance I bought a balanced 58mm crank 125 then a Tillotson 72mm block with double row bearings for 140. Ec carbs designed the parts I just mentioned, while Harbor Freight is China's attempt at getting into our performance market. Just saying my 236 will stand straight up at 50. All said and done for about 750 my 20 degree Tillotson hemi is why I will never waste money on a HF engine.

I’m assuming your talking about adding shims to the back of the flywheel? No the taper was too much and would not work out. The smaller 212 flywheel was just right.. Thanks for watching

Some of the motocross bikes have electric start, and their batteries are small. They work great.

Hello Trailmixbilly, These MM80 frames are small. Once you install a larger engine there isn’t much room for anything else. I’m in the process of extending the wheel base and that will make more room for things like batteries. Thanks for watching!!

Hello John that’s a great suggestion and would probably be able to charge with the charging coils. I chose the RYOBI battery for convenience. I have plenty of them ready to go and there just plug and play easy to change when needed. I can try the AGM next time. Thanks for watching.

Would it be safe or even possible to charge the ryobi battery, if you had 2 coils? Think it would need a rectifier to convert the current.

Hello Dave, It would be possible to charge with coils and rectifier but I don’t think it would be safe. Lithium batteries are very particular on how they’re charged. The charge from the coils is small and would take a long time. If you want to use charging coils than I would suggest a different battery. Thanks for watching!!

Hello Beto, yes you can depending on what Predator you have. You will loose the billet flywheel on a 212. There is a billet flywheel with the ring gear but only fits 224 and clones. The regular 212 will not fit.

@@DIYWilly I seen red beards video thing smoked Tillotson 225 I'm debating on if I want to mount it or a 212 non hemi I have laying around I don't plan on trying to go 70 on this 62 bird duck it's a 60 year old mini bike I just want to putt around on it 30 is as fast as I want tongo just enough to get out of its own way lol

@@heathenprojects2639 I will most likely build it but definitely later. Right out of the box and with my big bones it went 34mph no trouble. And possibly more but I kinda backed off on the throttle a bit. My bike is 12t at the clutch and 54 at the wheel. 👍

@@DIYWilly doing a 10/60 clutch set up I should restore my Tecumseh or Briggs I've got a original comet that I cleaned up but they will not fit a Honda or clone because of extra brace on back plate but rebuild kit for one is almost as expensive as a new predator

@@MrRogrod1 I appreciate the offer of the carb. I use a NIBBI 24mm carb and I think the fuel went bad and messed the carb. I have it apart now but haven’t had time to really check it out. Hopefully I can get it done Sunday.

24:10 Mark : I've gotten this far in the video. While the flywheel for the 212 motor fits...isn't it weighted differently than the flywheel for the 224? Also..would a shim from the shim kit have fixed the back spacing issue of the 224 toothed flywheel? Wasn't that the point of the spacer kit? I'm going to continue from here and see what happens. Fun video so far. I have been watching a ton of these mini-bike videos recently and it's making me want to get one and start tinkering so I can have different options for "Shuttle Craft" on my Bus when traveling.

How are you doing so glad you have taken an interest in minibikes. They are a lot fun and can become an addictive hobby with the performance add on parts never stop.. I have fun building them and talking with other builders to get ideas or to help out. The flywheel I use is actually a GX200 flywheel which should have the correct taper. I was using it on my 212 build and it worked good enough. As for the weight, we’ll I believe the weight in the same. I should put the on a scale. I plan on doing the billet flywheel due to the performance mods coming in the future but that flywheel with the ring gear is $$$. You wouldn’t want to shim the flywheel because that would not allow it to seat properly on the taper. Thanks for watching and get a minibike to ride, it’s fun.

Mr. Steel honestly I don’t know. I’ve never owned a gx160. But the Hemi has a different tapper on the crank then the non hemi. I had a GX200 flywheel work on my non Hemi. I would have to say no.

He’s talking about shimming the crankshaft end play..... take the side cover off and adjust the shim washers. .

You can install an electric start on any of the Honda/clone engines. You just need to have the correct kit for your application. The difference between the engines is the crank shaft taper for the flywheel.

No I had no issues with the adapter. Just had to install a larger fuse for the load the motor was drawing. I believe I went to a 40amp fuse. Did you do the same set up? Make sure the valves are adjusted correctly to not have kick back. The kick back will cause the engine to be hard to turnover and blow the fuse.

@@DIYWilly Was your fuse blowing at 30 amps? The engine has no kick back. I put the wires directly to the battery and they were hot. I belive the starter seneloid or starter switch is shorting out. Thanks for your fast response

My wires do not get hot. Everything works great. The starters are cheap to replace. Maybe try another and see if that is your problem. Also make sure you have quality wire (Correct gauge) and everything is including good solid grounds are tight. Also try a larger ground wire or jump to another spot on the engine/frame. No it will not. Turned out the HEMI taper was still wrong. I purchased the kit long before I did the video and I thought it would. But I actually used a GX200/clone kit and it worked perfectly. Sorry for the confusion. I thought I mentioned it in the video when I had the 3 flywheels to compare. Thanks for watching..

Honda GX160 GX200 5.5HP 6.5HP... www.amazon.com/dp/B01CK30NEC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share You may want to add another charging coil or purchase the dual charging coil. Also there is no instructions so you need to put google to work. I’ll try and answer any further questions you may have, but it can be difficult to help this way.

@@MojoBarbeque I used this set up on my Ez Go few years back with a push button start and battery with solar back up to run LED lights front and back. Worked perfectly. I used a reverse box to the CVT and a solid axle. What I had problems with was the brake and making it stop. The 212 would get that golf cart to 21mph. I even used it to pull my Suzuki Samurai down the street

Starters are usually made more for your higher compression engines, plus battery and wires, for me, it's just more that can go wrong! Cool for a hobby/project Love the M,Moto are you happy with it??

Flywheel torque is 54 ft/lbs. that was NOT torqued. Is that a hemi? I rest my case. Junk.
