Electric Tractor: Testing RPM of Motor

Just a quick test of an electric forklift motor to see if it has an appropriate speed of rotation for the tractor.

After I shot this, I tested what the PWM output voltage was, and it looked like it was around 20V or so when the motor was at 1800 RPM.
A 36V (but high capacity/high current) battery pack should work fine with this motor in the tractor.

Might advise a very easy to reach panic button to cut battery power, just in case you hadn't already thought of it. Can't wait to see the final result! Would a local machine shop be able to straighten the coupler? You said you were going to do it yourself, and I'm sure you could, but just curious.

So just drop the voltage to reduce risk of to many RPMs? Or use a mechanical limit on the potentiometer

That's exactly what a DC PWM motor controller does. It takes a battery pack voltage of, for example, 48V and outputs the equivalent of a variable voltage by simply turning the circuit on and off many times per second. If the duty cycle was set to 50%, the motor would spin as though it were running on 24V - half the speed.

@@BenjaminNelsonX Just remember when you lower the voltage, you also lower the power of the motor. Also if you half the voltage you only get quarter of the original power so keep that in mind! I'm waiting for next update!

Higher voltage for more torque and less wiring awg. There are tons of ways of putting a potentiometer into a range of resistance.

That's what I'm thinking. Probably a 48V pack, as that's good for affordable and easily available parts. I'll probably re-use the physical throttle lever on the tractor and have some gearing connect it to the potentiometer. Have the full range of the physical throttle match up with however much of the range on the potentiometer I want to use.

not sure what it takes to build a tractor, but is it possible you want the higher power/torque but just convert it to lower RPM with some sort of gearing? thanks for sharing.

Additional gearing really starts adding a lot of mechanical complexities into a project like this. A PWM speed controller allows for maximum torque, while varying the speed.

Can you explain the pre-charge resistor across the solenoid? It would seem that it would maintain power to the controller 24/7. My Farmall 300 conversion made the trip back to the farm from the local high school last Thursday. I made it a mile and a half before needing to get towed the remaining mile. The batteries had not been fully charged before the trip but I now have charger working.

A pre-charge resistor allows the capacitors in the motor controller to fill up more slowly. Without it, capacitors can fill up nearly instantly when the main power circuit is completed. Do that too many times and they can blow out, destroying the motor controller. Projects like this typically have some sort of manual disconnect which is left open when the vehicle isn't being used. Otherwise, the pre-charge resistor could be set up on something like a push-button momentary on switch.

Those old 300s could put out 38hp at the PTO, how close do you think that combo will get you? Asking as someone who rebuilt a Farmall 450 right when you kicked off this project and the engine parts for those old tractors are getting hard to find and expensive!

I still have the engine. I figure it will be useful to somebody else. I think horsepower should be fine. This is a 13” diameter forklift motor. It’s a beast.
