I've been driving Teslas in Vermont winters for ten years. I currently own a 2020 Model S and a 2021 Model 3. They offer a superior winter driving experience compared to gasoline vehicles I've owned, including several Audis. For example, when I leave my home in the morning when it's 20-degrees outside, the interior warms up within the first mile of driving. Tesla's all-wheel-drive traction control system has digital torque control that responds instantly to snow and ice on the road. I've never experienced anything like it in a gasoline vehicle. Range loss in the winter can be vastly improved by preconditioning the vehicle while it's still plugged in at home, using the Schedule feature in the Tesla app. This will pre-warm the battery to its nominal operating temperature, preventing you from wasting energy during the first half-hour of your drive. Also, when driving to a Supercharger in winter, always use navigation to get there, even if you know where you're going. This will cause the vehicle to precondition the battery (if necessary), giving you the maximum possible charging speed when you plug in at a Supercharger.

@@KZfaqsucksballs Not a hassle at all if you own your own home and have a 240V outlet installed in your garage. I plug my Tesla in every night and it charges to 300 miles while I'm asleep. The energy costs me 25% of the cost of gasoline on a per-mile basis. I only use Tesla's high-speed public chargers when I go on trips. You are misinformed about the use of coal on the electric grid. There are only a few states where coal is the primary fuel source. But even when an EV is charged from electricity generated from coal, an efficient EV like a Tesla Model Y will create significantly less CO2 (via the power plant) than a similar gasoline car driven the same distance. And that's not to mention the CO2 created in refining and transporting gasoline. Catalytic converters help reduce hydrocarbons, but they do not reduce CO2 which is the primary cause of global warming.
@newsgeekus1216
@newsgeekus1216 7 ай бұрын
@@KZfaqsucksballs. This is demonstrably false. Check out Elon’s video where he talks about coal electricity. Because electric motors are so so efficient they produce 1/3-1/4 less co2 from coal electricity than cars. It is also much more easier (and cheaper) to clean up coal emissions. Given that 20% of the US grid is now non fossil fuel, it is actually much cleaner. Also, even after the catalytic converter does it stuff there’s still a lot of noxious, toxic elements coming from gasoline tailpipes.

I level 2 charge my M3LR at home. My voltage is 241v and my charge rate is about 45 mph. Be careful your 208/230 v drier connectors. Some of them are not meant for 100 duty cycles. If its not rated for that they can burn. Recommend the Tesla Wall Charger. Very controllable thru your app. You can charge to 100% as long as you don't let the car sit with 100% for a long period. Its ok to charge to 100% just before you leave on a trip. When traveling and supercharging you want to charge just enough to get to your next supercharger or home. Most of the time the car is ready before you get your coffie and use rest room.

Congrats on your purchase. The Model Y is a very good choice. Level 1 is enough if you drive less than 40 miles. Further you can use the weekend to charge up. I put in a level 2 for $600. In the trip planner, look for lightning bolts on left side, 3 lightning bolts is a filter to look for only level 3 chargers. 2 bolts for level 2.... If your not comfortable rolling in near empty; say "navigate to a superchager". There might be one closer. If not, slowdown of conserve energy. In desperate times, say "navigate to a destination charger", it'll give any charger (and could be a non-Tesla) near by. It's 900 lbs of batteries at the bottom of a Y, which is almost impossible roll over. A Y has one more inch clearing than the 3. You had to pay for the toll hitch? With the latest software update, the screen will be red if you signal and there's a car in your blind spot.

I've passed the local charging stations twice in the past 3 weeks. Both times there were tow trucks bringing in Teslas for charging. I'll stay with gasoline as long as I can, hopefully, the rest of my life. OR, Engineers, come up with something better. I know you can.

I've been driving Teslas for ten years. I've only seen that once. This typically happens with novice owners, who haven't learned how to use the car's navigation system to direct them to Supercharger stations before the battery runs low on energy. Driving an EV requires some planning ahead. You don't want to wait until the battery is nearly empty to start looking for a charging station. It is also important to know that battery miles are not always equal to driving miles. Range depends on a lot of factors, as it does with an ICE powered vehicle.

@@toddr.lockwood843 I think the future has to be hot swappable batteries instead of charging stations which would then make Tesla's charging station infrastructure obsolete. I already have anxiety whenever something goes wrong with my Mazdas or Hondas so even though I was contemplating Tesla, the quality and service issues as well as the insurance rate is what prevented me from making the change. The range doesn't really effect me at this time. I am considering the Volvo EX30 next year depending on the insurance rate for this.
@toddr.lockwood843

@@igloozoo3771 Tesla experimented with battery swapping on the Model S in 2013. The original Model S was engineered for it. They built one automated battery swapping station in Northern California to let Tesla owners try it out. The end result was that owners preferred Supercharging to swapping. Many owners were reluctant to trade their battery for a different one with an unknown history. Additionally, the cost of building the swapping stations would have been prohibitive-millions of dollars per station vs. $300K for a Supercharger station. Since then, the speeds of the Superchargers have increased dramatically. In a Model 3 or Model Y, it is not uncommon to see charging speeds of up to 1,000 mph. As a practical matter, if you have the ability to charge at home at night, that's where you're going to do 90+% of your daily charging in a Tesla. Most Tesla owners only use Superchargers when they go on trips.

Polarizing topic no matter who talks about this subject, we have elected to wait a few years to see how the whole car industry shakes out. We expect range to increase with all the effort that is going into batteries. For now, we are continuing to drive our 2013 Subaru Outback with 30 miles per gallon and adaptive cruise . We don't want to trade our tried and true car for something that we will regret spending about $40K on with either gas or electric. Again, the car paradigm is changing rapidly, we are taking the approach that the EV tech will level out in a few years. Loved your joke about the adult toy, certainly proves to us your are human just like the rest of us. Be safe out there Doc and Patty.

STRONGLY recommend having the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment - the charger) hard wired on a new circuit. The problem is that the EVSE is going to draw more power than anything your home has ever seen and is going to do it for hours on end. If there is something wrong with your dryer plug, the existing wire in the walls or the electrician installed a budget outlet or didn't connect the wires properly, you can have a heat spot form. There are many tales of plugs melting, walls getting hot to the touch and outright fires due to faulty, old or inferior installations. Aluminum wires for example tend to break down faster than copper, so EVSE manufacturers do not endorse connection to a circuit with those wires. Do it right and make sure you install a NEW properly rated and dedicated circuit. Even though the install looks really really simple, make sure to have a licensed and EXPERIENCED electrician do the install. Not only will they ensure that the latest code is followed, but they will understand the points where critical attention must be paid. Further, if something does happen, you have their insurance and the local inspector to dump the blame on. Yes, $1000 is a lot for an install, but compared to the cost of the EV, it's not really a big deal for the piece of mind. Proper copper cables of a gauge appropriate to your new circuit is not cheap. Just 100 feet of cable can easily run over $600 depending on the circuit size. This is not a place you want to "save money". Sure the budget wire might be just fine for a decade or so - but do you really want to have to do it again later just because the wire has had thermal breakdown? Again, NOTHING in your home ever moves as much power as these EVSE (chargers) do. You simply can't compare their install to anything else other than maybe a large solar system. In fact, your EVSE is likely to draw more than the average solar system can produce. Utilities here in Massachusetts limit new installs to 10kW. Common EVSE equipment can provide up to 12kW.

Excellent point! The forums have a lot of "home electricians" giving advice on how to wire these dryer plugs and I have wondered how safe these practices really were. When our electrician did the plug....I recall the wire alone costing a few bucks a foot (and that was pre-pandemic prices). So the cost is really relative to the quality of the components as well as the cost of the electrician....definitely cheap insurance to hire quality installation.

We bought my wife a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, new in 2018. Got full Fed/State credits. Had a range of 25 before the ICE kicks in. Now has about 20. It's perfect for her 12 mile round trip commute for work. We just use the 110V cord in the garage for overnight top off. She hyper miles the thing like a game. Something I can't do. Though about a Porsche Taycan, but decided to stick to my Audi A7 for the time being. The whole time you guys were talking, you could've been eating a dehydrated meal. Just saying.

Dehydrated foods....I know, I know :) ...Hopefully, we can bring some of that stuff back in 2024, but I'm picking up a bunch of extra shifts and the project/chat videos are so much easier to do. @@Springtailsolutions The downside to hybrids is that they are more complex and more expensive than ICE vehicles, and they do not have the reduced maintenance benefits of an EV. For many, a plug-in hybrid will serve as a transitional vehicle prior to buying an EV. It's a way to get used to the routine of plugging in at night. But data has shown that the vast majority of plug-in hybrid owners rarely plug them in.

More motors is more efficient because you can use different types of electric motors at the same time. One is good for high torque and regen (rear motor) to get you moving and one is better for cruising once you get to speed (front motor). I may have gotten that reversed but you get the idea.................Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken. Drive in CHILL mode, tires last longer and u still have plenty of acceleration for the average person.

Hard acceleration, braking and turning will wear out tires faster. One I'd make is Tesla service goes to the customers/ Rarely customers go into the service center. When I swapped out Summer tires to Winter, I booked in the app. Tesla service swapped the tires in my garage. No hefting tires and waiting in a garage. Finally, Teslas are the safest cars. Not one of the safest, they are the safest.

I was contemplating trading my Honda Accord Hybrid for a Telsa 3 or Y before the end of the year because I had won $13K in Vegas and the tax credit would help when Tax Time comes, but I have anxiety with the quality and service of Telsas in general and also the higher insurance rates.

@Springtailsolutions
@Springtailsolutions 7 ай бұрын
Actually....I did spend a lot of time researching EVs (And on youtube with EV Dave and Ryan Shaw) but there are some things that can only be learned through experience such as the massive gaps in the charging network in the midwest. That every third party charger requires its own app and loaded credit card, none of the third party chargers can be counted on to work and that currently charging still adds a large amount of time to long distance travel. I hope it changes by the time my CT comes available....OR it lives up to the range that Elon originally predicted. The Model Y did not fulfill our needs, I remain optimistic about the Cybertruck.

I am not sure what your aim for this video really is. You kept saying: "when we had our Tesla", so what are you driving now and why did you not even try to compare to an ICE vehicle? You made it sound like all you do is travel. If that is the case you would buy a long-range version of a Tesla and not care about the local superchargers as you would have something like 370-400 miles in your battery every day you start the car, charging at home. If you're really traveling a lot, would it have been so hard to describe a typical trip? With a long range vehicle driving 300 miles between charges or even 250 miles you have traveled about 4 hours +, take a break, go to the rest room and maybe get something to eat and your car is filled up again. If you had an ICE vehicle the food options are just as horrible unless you charge/fill-up and then drive to a place with better food. Overall, this is not helpful for beginners. I rarely do but in this case I gave it a thumbs-down.
@Springtailsolutions
@Springtailsolutions 7 ай бұрын
We do travel a lot (usually with a trailer as well)....We talked about attempts to travel into Kentucky and Tenn...these are 10+ hour trips with a fair number of choke points in between. At the time Louisville was the worst as it had no supercharger and required a 100+ mile diversion to Cincinnati to find a charger or we could sit at a level 2 charger for 6 hours. Things have improved a bit since then....but for long trips....300 mile range is not enough when you start factoring that charging to 80% (now 240 miles) and factoring in a buffer, rolling to a charge station at 15% (now effectively a 195 mile real range). It's just not remotely optimal of an option yet. My take away was that I would not buy another EV until there was a truck with a realistic 400 mile range or until there were more reliable charging stations. Considering that Elon is a pathological promise breaker, the latter will probably be the option we will wait for. I am sorry that we did not earn your "thumbs up" but I think that we bring up a lot of good points (both positive and negative) especially for people in the middle of the country that don't have the luxury of a supercharger every 10 miles.

@@Springtailsolutions Is there any chance you would state how long this has all been as you keep saying: at the time? I guess, with 400 miles range pulling a trailer and the current charger system (outside of Tesla) you will keep using ICE trucks for another 6-8 years.
