I'm going through a career change and decided to carry on the family trade by training to be an electrician. This video is so clear and well-structured that it has helped me more than my tutor ever could. This video has made it so easy to understand for someone who struggles to study. Thank you

As a 28 year electrician 12 years with a masters license here in America I find your practices very interesting. We don’t send our transformers to ground the way you do. We verify the circuit is dead to our MDP by voltage readings, Not continuity. The cables you use are interesting to me as well because we run conduit for all main lines unless it’s bus duct up a high rise or through a production facility. I wonder if the NEC adopted some of the ways you do things if we could actually make it cheaper and more efficient for the end customer. I only found you a few days ago but I’ve enjoyed your content keep it up.

Great stuff as always Mike! One thing that JW had mentioned which I think is important (you sort of mentioned it), is that even on an approved voltage indicator with a digital display and the indicating lights, the indicating lights are what is supposed to be relied on, not the display. Looking forward for your 3 phase video 😁

It still amazes me the number of people that either use a Multimeter to test for safe isolation or just don't bother at all, they just flick the switch off and trust that it's done the job😢. Another great video that hopefully people will take notice of.

Good video. Nice to see you showing the lockout was one step back from the kit you intended to work on. I look forward to the 3 phase video.

heck yes, I proved L-N and L-E on a system a couple of years back, small house, being redone, didn't prove properly and got a massive 'lock on' belt through N-E (reversed polarity plus switching in the neutral :\ ) That will teach you more than any amount of lectures :(

Great video RC! Like how you have put a deliberate error in there for people to find 👍😉 I would add to be aware of if it is a double pole isolation, that also breaks the neutral as is the case in your video, or if it is a single pole isolation that breaks only the live. If it is single pole, then the test for dead procedure will not pick up a borrowed neutral fault, until the neutral is broken. Under this situation, after the isolation and initial test for dead, I would break the neutral as live working, and then test for dead again. This is more likely in a commercial / industrial installation however, a similar scenario exists for a PEN fault to a domestic premises, where a two pole tester may show the installation to be dead, when in reality there is still power. In this case a sweep with a non-contact voltage pen would show the live wires, or you need to find a true earth for the two pole tester.

Excellent advice but just one point of correction GS38 requires that we prove our voltage indicator on a known source or a proving unit rated to the same voltage as the voltage we are testing. A known source can be the incoming side of the main switch . Other than that fantastic advice and video nicely explained and well presented 👍

You are a fountain of knowledge. I have the t6-1000. I was looking at the new prv240fs proving unit. Just double checked and it only goes up to 240v. Might have to look at the tried and trusted Martindale one.

Good clear video. Only thing I would say is you need covers on your probes as I believe GS38 states maximum of 4mm of tip should be exposed.

Some new builds are now getting full 3-phase due to the requirement for new homes to accommodate an electric car charger and for heatpump installations. But normally a street has 3 phase along it and one phase to each house, divided equally. Because we have 100A 240V as standard into homes we can usually cater for quite a lot of load on one phase.

No devices, no gimmicks will save you from live current but some mild creative thinking might. Instance, your elbow on the side of the enclosure while working one handed on a wire harness you've never laid eyes on before. Your forearms might suffer but your chest is safe. Just one example but eh, you do you. Not like your gonna listen anyway.

@@residualelectrical Agreed, point is don't rely on safety gimmick but also don't rely on some safety tip your read about somewhere. I would say think and try to experiment with but that's also a dangerous venue. So instead my message to you brave souls is, god's speed.
