Just a few tips for anyone sitting their AM2s close to the post date of this video. The metal conduit is a 90 from an enclosure to a through box, then a double set from the through box to another enclosure, so over egg your measurements, and pay attention to the tolerances. The maximum demand for the installation was pre filled out for my exam. The pvc conduit requires a 'bubble' over a preset piece of conduit to a 90 (20-25mm), and you can use a coupler, so my advice would be do the bubble and use the coupler, it's in the spec! You are allowed to ask for more conduit if you mess it up, to a maximum of 3 times, then you will be given a pre bent piece! However this may impact your result. Pay attention to the DOL (random conductor not connected on the start circuit) and make certain the phase rotation is correct. When doing the inspection a testing, you are allowed to put right any mistakes made during the install phase. The key from the lock out kit has a hook in your bay that it belongs on, NET have deemed that a 'safe' place. Be acquainted with using a £20 multimeter as NET deems this a better tool for fault finding rather then £600 worth of Megger/Kewtech/Metrel. And as always, read the spec!

Thanks for that. How did you go about conducting the global IR test? Switch off the RCBO and test the whole board? Did you take out the L and N conductors when testing the RCBO separately or can you leave them in? Any help would be appreciated.
@ainsleiparker9068
@ainsleiparker9068 Жыл бұрын
@@detroutspinners9933 When doing my dead tests, I already had the conductors from the ring dismantled, so to save components vulnerable to damage, I conducted my IR test at that point. Obviously, in your schedule of inspection, circuits vulnerable to damage are a prerequisite, so you would know to list them and not try firing 500v down those conductors. I personally tested it circuit by circuit to make sure no voltage was ever present where it shouldn't be. If you think you have messed something up, don't panic, the instructor is there to help you, not hinder. If you're not sure, ask the question, there is no harm in asking, and 9 times out of 10, you'll know the answer but the nerves will be getting to you. It's really as simple as just do your job, you know what you are doing, and it is no different to any other day on site, Good luck!

@@ainsleiparker9068 thanks for the detailed reply, I wasn’t aware that you could test circuit by circuit - I’d heard they told you to test the whole board. If you can test them individually I’d rather do that, seems easier. Also, how did you go about testing the heating and CO2 alarm circuits? Test them with the FCU off? Did you test the second leg, i.e after the fused spur?
@ainsleiparker9068
@ainsleiparker9068 Жыл бұрын
@@detroutspinners9933 The heating, I tested to the SFS, I don't know how it is ok to test it to that point, but anything from there is fused so I guess it is no better than saying that any appliance with a plug top does not comply to 7671. When I tested the Co2, I just tested the conductors between the DB and the Co2 alarm with it disconnected. Again, when filling out your schedule of inspection, all circuits vulnerable to damage you will list, so that would be the boiler, the ring, the Co2 alarm and the lighting circuit.
@detroutspinners9933
@detroutspinners9933 Жыл бұрын
@@ainsleiparker9068 so they’re ok with you not testing after the SFS on the heating? And you tested the CO2 alarm with the fused spur switched on and conductors out? I thought they wanted all covers on? Apologies for the quizzing, I just want to make sure I get it right. One wrong move and it’s game over apparently!

Did my AM2 in the late 80s in Enfield when it first came out. Failed first time on the testing because I had never done testing before, this was back in the days of wind up Meggers. I actually walked off the test as soon as the instructor wheeled out a trolley of multiple testers in front of me. I thought 'I'm wasting my time here' My boss wasn't too happy. I did a pre course before the next attempt and sailed through it.

One thing I do when installing accessories, sockets switches etc which I think would be good to teach at college, a socket for example, wire up then push socket into back box pull back out and re tighten terminals, the conductors in terminals move as they are pushed into the back box the amount of accessories I have opened up and the conductors have fallen out, I wished I had re trained in plastering, all you need is a hawk, trowel and a criminal record, the hassle in this industry now as a trade the rewards don’t match.

Great content as usual - question regarding R1+R2 on the Motor circuit. Assuming test centre doesn't allow manually provoking the contactor and you undertake the test in 2 stages as demonstrated, I'm guessing the assessor will expect you to un-null the MFT and then re-null it in conjunction with any Ceenorm/Probe adaptor they lend you before taking the readings of the contactor downstream leg?
@ainsleiparker9068
@ainsleiparker9068 Жыл бұрын
My assessor asked me to stop splitting hairs and just record my findings, I had nulled my leads and questioned the R1+R2 readings I was receiving as 2.5mm twin from point A to point B should not be that high, and in a real world situation, I would be investigating why? I think all they want to see is that you have the capacity to look at your findings and know it is ok and know that if you think something is wrong, recheck what you have done and make sure an idiot error is not in play. When conducting my dead tests on the DOL, I tested from the source to the DOL, and then from the DOL to the motor, and added the two. It takes a couple of minutes more to do it that way.

Best path is to do your apprenticeship before you do your degree. Think of it as personal development. 4 years isn't really much time but it's enough to decide where you want to take your career. During a degree, there will be time between semesters when you can continue working for either your previous employer, another employer or through an agency, if you're worth your salt. Or you could take a gap year, volunteer or study abroad. If you're at university doing this degree then presumably you're seeking a top tier job, so think carefully and be sure that the work you do between semesters is relevant to your career path, ie, in a relevant industry and not just bar work. Chances are that this will dictate your career path. Best of luck.

Has anyone heard about 'GROUNDING' to your bed for health reasons? Health mats that connect to the earth in the electrical system. Would it be better to run a separate earth wire to a rod outside away from the property either to the bed or ground mat in your living room? Potentially, connecting to the mains earth wire could be dangerous with a defective circuit with largish voltages appearing on the earth. Maybe a video on this could be helpful for people who are thinking about doing this.

Some notes; most centres ask for you to connect the cables in connectors or wagos through the DOL starter. Don't forget to put the sliders across for global IR. Disconnect the rcbo fully and do IR on the ring final separately All faults are switched in so they won't be visual like screwing down on insulation.
