It is a new concept to the teachings in our school.In school it has been informed the students as movement of electrons is current or electricity.In your explanation you are telling about the electric field and free electon is cause for electricity.In this situation Dyality electros are functioning as wave and particle. and particle so still need explanation.What is the function of proton and neutrons in the copper wire or Aluminium wire Is there free electrons in the Aluminium wire as in copper wire.We were taught as copper and aluminium wires are good conductor of electricity. It is true that electric field travels at speed of light. A point to add on to that is the electrons in a highly conductive material (Silver, gold, copper and aluminum in that order of decreasing conductivity) is not bound to a single atom but more delocalized over a certain distance. This facilitates the movement of electric field to reach the speed of light in a conducting wire.
