Full Hyundai Kona Electric review: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
The Volvo EX30 is everywhere right now… and for good reason. It’s the biggest launch in the brand’s history and it has the potential to create a real stir in the electric car market. A multi-award winner even before it landed with customers, the baby electric Volvo certainly arrives with a strong reputation.
But is it really as good as it seems? To find out, we pitched the EX30 against its nearest rival - the Hyundai Kona Electric 65kWh. With 319 miles of WLTP range, futuristic styling and bags of equipment, the Korean machine is a firm favourite here at Electrifying.com.
The Volvo is a bit smaller than the Hyundai, has a 64kWh battery, 295 miles of range and looks pretty swish. It features Volvo’s controversial minimalist interior with no central speedo readout and almost all the car’s functions on the infotainment system.
Join Nicola and Nicki as they compare the two and deliver the electrifying.com verdict. Do you agree with them? Let us know in the comments below.

Greetings from Norway….the land of the EV’s. Great video, but I must make a couple of comments. The new 2024 Kona (which I now own) is made as an EV to start with, with the internal combustion engine as an option, unlike the previous Kona which was first designed as a fossil car. As for the annoying warning chimes, I turn them off every trip and takes just 6 seconds. I have saved the settings page on my “Favourites” star button on the steering wheel which I access at start up. It’s so simple and straight forward. Another feature not mentioned is remote parking with the use of the “smart key”. Parking in a tight spot? No problem, get out of the car and move the car backwards and forwards by using the smart key. This is a completely new car with only the name “Kona” remaining. It’s an absolute joy to drive, and as for charging speeds, not sure what all the fuss is about. I charge my car overnight in my garage to 80% which gives me 350km (218m) in winter which is plenty for my daily use. In summer at 100% I get nearly 600km (375m) urban driving with minimal use of climate control. Another important feature the 2024 Kona has is the “Over The Air updates” (OTA) which is a must these days. I have driven many EV’s for 8 years here in Norway and I must say that the new Kona is fantastic value for the money, and one of the best cars I’ve owned.

The Kona is still on an ICE platform, maybe they designed the sheet metal as an EV first but the underpinnings of the car are still underpinnings of an ICE car, which then got a battery and motors shoved into it in the case of the Kona electric.

So, update. I've just received my 64kWh Kona Ultimate. I have to say that I'm astounded by the refinement and build quality. Having the physical buttons is just a godsend. Everything is in usable reach and intuitive to boot. OTA update gave us wireless Android Auto and Car Play to appreciate the not-too-bad Bose OE system. The tech is amazing and once you've figured the shortcut key can be programmed to vehicle assists, you can turn the driver alert warnings and speed alarms within 2 seconds, as part of your pre-ride ritual. Living in hilly rural area, it's great to get all that regen. Life on the twisties doesn't invoke much body roll or lean, so I'm impressed. Ride isn't crashy and I'd say it's nicely damped on our overbanded, potholed roads. A comfy family cruiser it is. The cabin, finished in white leather is light airy and roomy. Rear facing child seat fits spot on and the reclined position means that my youngest doesn't stamp her feet on the backrests, unlike on my X5. Relegates my my X5 for local journeys when carrying our mountain bikes and kit and the wife's countryman for pottering around. Wanted a car that was slightly bigger than the Countryman to swallow up the kit for 3 mountain bikers and a bum shuffler, and this delivers! We've only had it a day. but I'm growing to love the EV life. Also going to quite enjoy the massive fuel savings with Hive charging.

Yeah, the Kona EV has always been seriously under-appreciated. As a company car TM3LR driver for the last two yrs, if it was my own money I had to spend, I would go Kona without a second thought. The Volvo is Chinese, not so different from MG4 etc., which brings it's usual compromises.

Rightly, the presenters recommend smaller wheels for performance (as do many reviewers for many cars). However, all the manufacturers' websites offer larger wheels for higher trims with no option to get the smaller wheels from the base trim. Why is this? Should the reviewer community pressure the manufacturers to offer this.

You're like early iPhone vs Android users. 😅 On another note, my opinion is that cars with all the features buried in the touch screen should be forbidden. It is not allowed to even have your phone in your hand while driving, but it's allowed to look away from the road and search for essential features buried in the computer. Also, does the sensor beep when the driver is fiddling with the control screen? And not looking at the road?

I have a Tesla Model 3 and to be honest I no longer look away from the road to locate the switch/knob/button. Most settings are done and changed before driving. Sat nav can be set prior to driving or using voice. The temperature setting is within a finger reach to tap plus or minus, or again use voice. I thought it strange that stalks and buttons were gone from the Tesla but it made sense and it works out to be far easier.

The look at the screen in the Volvo has got me thinking. It would be interesting to take a group of cars to a test track to see how easy it is to do common functions while driving at around 40mph without cruise control. Somewhere with lane markings like Millbrook could be ideal for that sort of test.

That's where the voice controls come into play, with google voice and the system is getting another update very soon OTA with Volvo already said things are changing with updates coming soon. Ultimately this is just the same as mobile phone manufacturers doing exactly the same for your mobile, so no issues there. Saves touching the screen, yes I agree at lower speeds it's slightly different if in busy traffic but very little traffic and motorway driving a different ball game. Also all the other tech available on both like lane keep assist, lane departure etc all helps.👍

Drove the EX30 at the Everything Electric show in Excel Centre London. It is small ! The back is very disappointing and the single screen is truly awful. For the styling the EX30 looks great from the outside, but inside it is a bit meh ! Very light steering that really makes you feel totally disconnected from the road. Nippy it is, worth the money it is not. The Kona feels like an altogether different car, familiar comfortable and as a driver you just feel in control. Loads of space in the back seats, the boot feels bigger. It’s pretty nippy and plenty fast enough. It may not have the styling of the EX30 but it is worth the money. It just feels solid and roomy.

A fan of the EX30 design and offering but just BEWARE that the cheapest version does NOT have a HEAT PUMP so expect to have at least a 30% reduction of the range when running in colder climates, which is very poor considering the max range is 209 miles!!! So getting only around 140mile range for a £33k electric vehicle is shocking and no excuse and heat pumps should be standard on all EVs.

This is one of the best fun comparison video's on the channel. At the end of the day it all boils down to the use case of the cars. Both have plusses and minuses as far as performance (Volvo) and practicality (Kona). Ultimately what are you going to use it for? To cover most bases for me I would have to agree the Kona would be the more likely option. But I'd decline both at the moment as I do not have the ability to fit a wall box where I live. Would I hire one? yes and the Kona would win again for its practicality. On todays British roads there are very few occasions that I could enjoy the acceleration of the Volvo but it would be fun to try although the tyres might wear a tad more. Top job girls and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the video. The Kona looks like 2 car-engineers had order to create a new car; one was responsible for the upper part and one for the lower part. Unfortunately, neither knew about the other and so two suggestions were made, which were then simply glued together. It´s a pity because the upper part looks really good... =/

Please do a Smart#1 and Volvo EX30 comparison in the coming months
@Tsenngu
@Tsenngu 3 ай бұрын
I had the old Kona the 22 and i had high hopes for the EX30 but the number of issues with the volvo smells just like fisker...totally unfinished while the kona is a tested and tried car and it just..works. We also have an 8 year old Kia niro recharge hybrid and that car except for services has cost us a total of 1000$ in a full brake change this year..and the kona cost me 0 bucks in 50 000km. I am not buying another stupid non software ready car (had ID3 as a company car and we returned 36 of them since they were shitty and stood more still then driving. Right at the moment i would def pick the Kona and frankly i live in a HEAVY snowy area in the winter with extreme cold and tons of snow and i have never ever needed 4x4 to get around and neither ever needed studded tires. If the price is equal i would any day go for the kona. Now daily driving an MG4 electric and had 1 single update of the whole car and it is great. So for me no EX30 with all the issues it has.
@VMYeahVN

I think comparing EX30 to Fisker is really inaccurate. Fisker actually has major functional issues, and that company is about to go bankrupt. The EX30 just is stylistically plain/boring like a Model 3 interior. That's not on the same level as Fisker's nonsense at all.

Some time ago I walked into a Volvo dealership to enquire about buying one. I was told that a heat pump was only available on the top of the range model. A heat pump wasn’t even an option on anything less. Next stop Hyundai. Heat pumps are INCLUDED in the prices of the Kona. That was it. I ordered a Kona. Since then I have learned from Electrifying that the Volvo has software issues so deliveries are being delayed. There can be nothing worse than a high spec car with software issues IMHO. Good review ladies. Right result. 👍

This the same Google automotive system as in the EX30 (only the GUI is different). The Kona before got in 2 years only small updates in the workshops, not to compare. Voice control , Google maps integrated in the car, some nice apps from the google store and so on. Best system (only Tesla is really good, maybe a little better.)

A fun review, thanks. We do not have children, but do have dogs. So we are not really concerned about space in the back row. In terms of looks and a rethink in how a car should be designed the Volvo wins hands down. I am still not happy with a UI/UX which has everything in the iPad stuck inelegantly on the dashboard but the rest is wonderful. Of the other cars you can get on this Geely platform the clear winner for me are the various Smarts. For around the same sort of money I could get a Smart Brabus #1. If you look at BMW’s sub brand, I could probably get a Mini Countyman. Both have more pizazz than the somewhat bloodless Volvo design.

Ahhhh, so that is how babies are born! 😂 I do like the Volvo, but I like Volvos, so not surprising. The lack of buttons and HUD is a shame, but maybe as you say living with it for a while, it is not an issue. As for the speckled interior, hmmm looks a bit like the new Dacia Duster's bumper, probably need to see it in the flesh. Bings and bongs... It's like having an elderly relative (not saying which of my relatives 😁) in the back telling me I am going too fast, too slow, too close to the car in front, etc. Brilliant review, I am thinking of these two cars and I am leaning towards the Volvo after this, maybe at the entry level mind, but I think Tom said wait for a year until they sort out the software bugs.

Kona should have had a tidier design, with a central or side(winged) charge port… the offset one spoils the look! But it has a much more sensible and useful interior, and probably that bit better range and warranty? Size wise, the Kona for me also has the edge. Volvo is a tad on the small side (though neither could be described as big cars). So, here I’d go for the Hyundai. That said, if Volvo go on to make an EX60 I’d be very interested to assess that car.

No way can it be a family car. Maybe a single person or no kids couple’s car! What I would really like is an EX40 on this ev platform rather than its current ICE chassis. So much more practical space. I think we make too much of the screen though. Thousands of Tesla drivers can’t be that wrong surely? I’ve had the XC40 recharge for two years. The google android based infotainment system is horrible. Often crashes, lags for no reason, has to be rebooted often, remnants of android for phones occasionally rears its head and updates seem to have slowed it down. The google voice detection is good but often for no reason, it will understand what I’ve said and then say it’s not connected (no signals randomly occur in the same places that previously it was fine). Oh and once it randomly lost all my saved radio stations! They did add car play but it took a looooong time from when they said they would. It’s a reason NOT to buy the Volvo! The Kona could be a good replacement but the bing-bongs are an immediate no-no so while I enjoyed the video, I won’t be considering either car!

Nicola -- THANK YOU for actually pronouncing Hyundai similarly to how it sounds, as opposed to how the condescending marketing team has told you to because they assume English speakers are idiots. Neither of you mention a heat pump. I think that's one of the major points you have to cover in any car -- 310 miles of range turns to 200 miles in the winter without one, though front and rear heated seats mollify that well. Frunks are direct indicators of front hoods which are too large and should be derided. The Kona has an excuse -- it's a gas car converted to EV. (I sure hope we see the end of those soon -- front wheel drive in an EV?) The HUD does not just look neat -- it makes the car much safer. I don't understand why that's not on every new car.

Hello Dai. Yes, Brits typically pronounce hyundai as the name Dai which has Welsh use as the short version of David or Dafydd and is in common use. So saying day for Dai isn't natural for us. Using a different pronunciation for car brands is common compared to their country of origin eg BMW and VW. Let's not make a big deal out of this.

I tried both of these last month, as need to change company car early next year. The Volvo is very stylish and the Tesla like interior is great, but it is actually a pretty small car and not cheap in the bigger battery version. The Kona is more middle-of-the road on everything but you get a lot more spec for spec for similar prices. I’d take a Model 3 over either, but then I looked at leasing rates on our company scheme and the Kona is over £100 a month cheaper than the Volvo and £200 cheaper than a Model 3. Given the Kona is an all round bigger car, I’ll probably order one, especially as I can get the top of the range Kona for way less than the Volvo.

IMHO the biggest downside for EX30 is the range. 295 miles of WLTP mixed range (=200 miles highway range) isn’t great by today’s standards. In comparison the new ID.3 GTX has 372 miles of range. Volvo has worse drag coefficient too, meaning that the difference in highway range is even larger.
