I'm crazy about Matt. He's really inspired me to push forward and make new progress. I think it's common in dance (and really all forms of creative expression) to feel like you have plateaued once you have reached a certain level, but this has given me fresh steam to press on and continue to improve. Thank you for your channel and all your hard work. Electro swing is very special to me, and your content is a wonderful tribute to what makes this fresh take on a classic style so awesome. Dance safe!! :)
@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! Much appreciated! I know what you mean. I also feel like that I've plateaued as of late, so really need to learn some new moves. A lot of time getting some inspiration from other creative folk can help in making progress. I think that's one of the great things about creative expression. One such expression can inspire another in someone else. :)

Just started my one year journey today. I learn 3 things. 1) My cardio is trash, need to be in much better shape. 2) I have absolutely no rhythm. 3) I spent today learning the running man for 45 minutes... Going to take a few more days to figure it out. Thanks for the videos, I learned a lot.
@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 3 жыл бұрын
That is great to hear that you started on this. In the beginning it can always seem quite hard. This type of fast-paced dance is a good cardio exercise, so the more you do, the better your cardio will become. For the rhythm, I'd recommend to start with slower-paced songs so that you can keep up. Faster-paced songs can be confusing to follow (I still get confused by some of them). I did a tutorial video on Running Man a long while ago. Maybe it can help give you some tips. :)

Ok, this is awesome. After our last conversation, it's cool to see more of your range and development, and to see you indoors too. (I know this video already existed, I just hadn't seen it until now.) You learned fast, and it does look like you've got experience with other sports/physical exertion, maybe even martial arts? You've got the archetypical brawler's build which can make even smooth and fluid movements seem more heavy/impactful, but you've got great knee/elbow articulation. Your choice of wardrobe is already amazing, mixing form fitting and relaxed cut is a great idea for you. For hand and ankle speed/flow weights and underwater drills are great. In my high school, way back in the 90s swing/ska revival, there was actually a pretty sizeable martial arts/dancer overlap so you saw guys with the training weights doing katas and tai chi, and then having great control and flare on the dance floor later on. Ballsy as hell showing your whole process from the beginning and way to kick ass and keep at it.
@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the feedback and positive comments. I didn't realise my martial arts background was so obvious. You are spot on about that. I did krav maga for 5 years, and I also have some experience with karate during childhood. Martial arts are really amazing for the overall fitness, I agree. That's a great idea about using hand and ankle weights for practice. I've been considering to try that recently, so might have a go at it. And yes, I find that these kind of progress videos are good for inspiration, both for other people to see and get inspired, but also for myself to see how far I've come and to keep going. :)

This little compilation of yours is wonderful, I mean your moves are awesome, so it's nice to see that they were once... less so. Not only does it take courage to show imperfection, but you show people like me whose moves are much... less so that we may also be able to achieve awesome moves some day. One question though, how often and how much did you practice? And how did you learn the moves?
@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I was hoping for exactly that - for this compilation to inspire people to learn as well. :) I learnt how to do most of the moves from tutorials here on KZfaq, and the rest is practice and occasional experimentation and trying to put the different moves together to make them flow. In the first few months I practised loads, it was at least 1-1.5 hours each day. After that it wasn't quite everyday, but I still tried to do them on a regular basis.

@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I learnt it from various tutorial videos here on KZfaq, and watching other electro swing and shuffle dancers. If you start with the basic moves and practice them every day (or regularly in general), starting from slow speed and then going faster once you become more comfortable, then you'll make progress faster than you can imagine. The moves I'd recommend to start with would be: V-step, T-step, Running Man, and Mr X. Once you get a hang of them, you'll be able to apply them as the bases of more complex moves and combinations. Charleston Step is also recommended to learn, though I'd advise to learn it after you get a hang of those other ones, since it's a bit more complex and tiring on the feet.

What are the most important moves to practice at first? For example should I be prioritizing v step over my running man?
@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'd say V step and Running Man are both good starting moves. There's no reason to prioritise one over the other. They're both good beginner moves and both form a basis of many others to come later. T step is another good starting one. I generally tell people that V step, T step, and Running Man are the best moves to start with. Nail those 3 and you can have an easier time with the others. :)
