This time I will tell you about the world of "Electronic Sports". I chose to say the world consciously. Because if you are out of this world it is normal for you to feel like an alien. The opening ceremony you will see on the video is from the world championship of a computer game called "League of Legends". But there are tournaments for games like Dota 2, Counter Strike, Fifa, Heartstone and my favorite StarCraft 2. If you would pass by these players you would thought that they are some tourists, but they are the most famous faces of this world. They are the athletes. Their coaches prepare them by playing computer games 18 hours a day. Their journey starts in the dark rooms of their houses and continues in the stadiums. Although the first known video game competition was held at Stanford University in 1972, and even in 1982 we have followed a futuristic espor competition in Tron, I think South Korea is home to electronic sports. The best thing they did after the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 was to wrap up the country with broadband internet networks. Young people who were left unemployed after the crisis also gave themselves to computer games. This topic got so serious that they even founded an electronic sports organization affiliated to "Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism" in 2000. At that time, the number of tournaments were made 10 per year were increased to 260 in 10 years. The number of players playing the League of Legends, one of the games played today, is 67 million a month. More than the number of people living in France (66.9 million). In order not to stay French , we have to recognize this subculture (A Turkish saying: if you stay french to a topic means you do not have an idea about it).
