Thanks for your video. You have shown a good basic overview of the scan tool. However, as an automotive technician of 34 years, just owning a scan tool, does not provide all the information you need unless you know what the data means, what is correct data and what is incorrect. The following information may be helpful. If you are to diagnose problems correctly in this particular case, other things that should be taken into account would be both short term fuel trim (STFT), long term fuel trim (LTFT), readings of the air mass meter, coolant temperature and other live data. At 5.30, the LTFT & STFT are in negative, which indicates that the fuel trims are being lowered due to a rich mixture. If nothing else is done apart from the O2 sensors being replaced, the rich mixture has not been diagnosed and in the future, the O2 sensors may need to be replaced again, due to the actual cause not being repaired. The scan tool has simply thrown up a code due to the voltage readings being out of parameters. Honest technicians are interested in diagnosing the fault, not just throwing parts at a vehicle. It might be worth asking "Why did the O2 sensors fail? Why was the mixture excessively rich? Was it just due to old age or incorrect fuel, coolant in the exhaust system due to a blown head gasket, leaky fuel injectors, or many other reasons that would cause those codes to be shown?" Thanks again for your overview of the scan tool. I am not trying to give you grief, just point out some other areas to be considered. I hope that the above information has been useful. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up with the great work.

MiracleMAX Could you list the causes for rich fuel trims and why old age ??
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 жыл бұрын
What you stated is true. In my case the O2 sensors have never been replaced(14 years), and as we all know, nothing lasts forever. The computer is compensating for the rich condition as you stated. It's also possible that I have a fuel injector that's not closing all the way, luckily they're easy to pull out and test.

O2 sensors definitely wear out due to contamination and just general break down. No doubt they needed replacement. Hopefully you can find the source of the problem. Good luck. Keep up the good work!

Hey Greg, I agree there are some mechanics out there that don't care. However it is not always the case. I have been a tech for 34 years and a college teacher part time for 14 years. I refuse to teach full time as I feel that all teachers should have current experience. Without trying to promote my own channel (sorry electronicsNmore) I have the motto 'making the complex simple' where I aim to find the cause of the problem and not just replace parts. Unfortunately, mechanics that just replace parts are not techs and truly interested in either their customers or their business.

No kidding about the ripoff. When my check engine light kept coming on, less than a year after I bought the car, I took it to the dealer so they could pull the error codes and see what it was. (I suspect it was just that my gas cap wasn't sealing tight enough, causing the wrong pressure inside the tank and thus the check engine light, which I've seen happen on other vehicles.) They wanted to charge me $90 (!!!) just to plug in their code reader and find out what the problem was. I basically said screw that, and took it up to Autozone where they tested it for free.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, most auto stores will test for free because they want to sell you parts. :-)
@00Skyfox
@00Skyfox 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the nice thing is no purchase is necessary to get it tested. If the dealership wants to charge $90 just to plug in and read the little screen, once the 2 years free routine service is up I'll probably be going somewhere else for repairs on whatever I can't do myself.

@@00Skyfox - at a shop/dealer you don't just get a code reading, you get diag for that code (unless it turns into a major diag then you should be quoted for the additional time to see if you want to continue). Contrary to what so many believe, there is no magic computer/reader that will tell you what is wrong with a car. The system will set a code when it detects an issue but the codes only give you an idea where to start looking. It doesn't tell what the problem is, only what it being affected. You still have to determine what is causing the issue. Often times a code will set in a system but is being caused by another system. Example: On some GM vehicles, the vehicle will be running fine but the ABS/Traction light(s) will be on. When you turn off and restart the car, the ABS light(s) will be off for a short while but comes back on. The brake system will be working fine. The ABS code will be "Stability Control Disabled" (can't remember the number off the top of my head). Now tell me what that means or go to your parts store and ask them and they'll likely try to sell you a wheel speed sensor. The first time I ran into this I had no idea what it meant. Everything from the ABS data showed to be operating properly. The description of it only said the traction/anti-skid was not available and that it was an informational code not intended for diagnoses purposes. After a lot of research I found out that the ABS controller will set this code and turn on the ABS light(s) when it detects that the engine controller is counting up more misfires than the ABS thinks is safe. The engine controller doesn't care about misfires as long as it's below the limits for emissions so it won't turn on the CEL. That time it turned out that the customer was using E-85 gas and it was causing the extra misfires that the ABS didn't like. I did an alcohol content reset in the engine controller and the misfires almost went away. (Note: E-85 is not good for your vehicles) The ABS was happy. On other vehicles I have found clogged injectors and vacuum leaks causing the same thing. Once had lifters causing it but it also had a fairly loud ticking sound.

I have the cheaper version of that centech (harbor freight) scanner but I actually picked up a bluetooth OBD2 reader that syncs with your phone. They are dirt cheap now. I have an evap error on my car that comes up every few months so I just plug in my reader look at the codes and make sure its the evap error and then reset it. You can also use this reader to get live readouts of things such as intake temp, oil temp/pressure, RPM's, speed, etc... But the problem with leaving this thing plugged in all the time is the OBD2 port (at least on my car) is always hot so when they reader is plugged in its always drawing power and always searching for a connection point so it drains my battery.

I love people who think a code/data reader will tell them what is wrong with a vehicle. So many times I have had someone say they replaced some part "the reader said was bad" but the vehicle is not fixed. Especially for EVAP and O2 codes. I laugh when they lose their face when they learn they will have to pay diag time to find out what it's really doing it plus the repair cost of labor and parts to correct the issue. Sorry Charlie, I don't work for free. Funny how they'll throw their money down a rabbit hole to not fix their vehicle but say the mechanic is a rip-off since he/she wants to charge diag time. Great example: Just this week a 2010 Honda Passport comes in with CEL on. Check codes to find P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire). Monitored the misfires and cylinder 3 was clocking misfires. Found the number 3 coil to be split. Quoted the coil and all spark plugs (the old plugs are very worn and was likely the cause of the coil burning up). Customer has a fit. Said he had just replaced the coil and spark plug and it didn't fix it. He said I didn't know what I was doing. I took a closer look and found he had replaced the coil for cylinder 2 not cylinder 3. That year of the Passport has two V6 engines with different cylinder numbering and of course he picked the wrong engine. I guess he's too smart to look at the engine stickers to see what engine he has. Some people shouldn't be trying to fix their cars. I was going to be nice and wave the diag time since it only took about 10 minutes to figure it out and just charge for the coil and spark plugs. After he showed his arse and talked so much crap, he declined the work but asked me which is the 3 cylinder. I told him he should look it up himself since I don't know what I'm doing. I took the hour of diag and walked away. This is mean of me but I hope he doesn't fix it right away and his catalytic converter gets plugged up from the un-burnt gas going out his exhaust. That would be like poetic justice. Too many people want to demonize the mechanic because they don't know what they're doing or they have had their jack-legged buddies work on their vehicle and end up spending more money to actually get the repairs done right.

Sadly, often times the customer or his/her jack-legged shade tree grease monkey friends can't fix the car or cause more damaged but the actual mechanics get blamed for charging too much when usually the mechanic doesn't set the price. Your buddy might can fix your car for $50 in the driveway where the shop charges you $100. Your buddy just made $50 off of you while the mechanic only made $30 for the same work. The other $70 goes to pay the shop's expenses.

If you mean the engine light (or check engine light or service engine soon light) is flashing then you have an issue where too much hydrocarbon (un-burnt gas) is going out your exhaust. It is usually due to a misfire condition but can be caused by several things. You need to get that checked right away. The extra un-burnt gas will cause you catalytic converters to fail and that gets very expensive.
