The Optisan Optics EVX FFP has been my favorite scope and has seen daily use for over a year. It has resided on several rifles and has never left me wanting and never missed a beat.
So can the SFP Helix from the newcomer, Element Optics, knock it off its perch as my go-to scope on my daily shooter? Does it have features, like a resettable zero stop, that I will deem essential for all future scopes? Are the turrets as crisp as the designers and pro-staffers say they are?
What we have set out to do is show you what we are seeing. This is our first optics review. We created an “eye chart” for scopes, and took photos (using a SideShot Phone Mount with a 50/50 prism and an iPhone 11 Pro) of the chart with both scopes at 30 meters. Those unedited photos are presented to you, so you can make the comparison for yourself.
We’ve also included some slow-mo video (using an EagleVision Mount with a 25/75 prism and a GoPro 7 Hero Black) of some wine bottle shooting we were “forced” to do shortly after we set the Helix up on Saber Tactical’s new Chassis for the FX Dreamline. These clips were shot at 20 yards.
While our intent with this video is to provide you with the information you can use to make good purchase decisions, I am prepared to say that if FFP is not a deal breaker, then the Helix is the scope to beat in this price range in terms of build quality and visual (through the tube) appeal. If you want a sub $500 scope and it has to be FFP, the Optisan EVX is still the optic to beat in my book.

Being an owner of an Optisan EVX 6-24x50 F1 myself, I simply had to watch that review! And I must say you've done a very good job. Bravo, PJ! I love the fact that you're using meters and that obviously you are a Mil shooter - so am I 😉 I am pretty impressed by the Mil reticle of Element Optics and the fact that the parallax is in meters. The parallax on the Optisan has always been a bit hard to adjust to the right distance, especially when filming through the scope when it matters most. Thanks for sharing, now you got me thinking about an Element in FFP 😉

Hi. What you guys think about the clarity of lenses between optisan an element optics? I have the optisan evx fp1 6-24×50 and I was thinking about changing it an element scope. The thing to don't like about the optisan evx is the parallax. It it too laggy you cannot measure the distance on parallax.

It’s a simple matter of not having both of those scopes available to me. The EVX I have in FFP doesn’t film well when compared to the SFP Helix. Good scope, but it’s easier for the camera to work with the simpler SFP lens arrangement.

The trick, if there is one, is to use the camera to focus the reticle, and then do the rest with the parallax wheel. It helps to use a camera that allows you to manually set, or at least lock the focus.

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I just purchased the Helix yesterday to go on my new FX Impact MRK11 gun. Haven't had the chance to use it yet. Been raining constantly since I bought it. Can you explain in one of your videos what and how to use the parallax ring on the scope? I have to wear glasses all the time. Would that be used so I wouldn't have to wear glasses to sight something in? Sorry. Kinda new to the air gun scene. I bought an FX Streamline a few years ago. Very nice and accurate too but doesn't hold as much air as the Impact. Using a hand pump is pretty tiring so have a small compressor on order. What do you use for a compressor or recommend. So for so many questions.
@WiscAirGunners
@WiscAirGunners 4 жыл бұрын
There are two adjustments you will want to look at. The first is the focus for the eye-piece.It's at the near end of the scope. When you have the scope on your rifle, use that ring to focus the reticle so it is clear. You may be able to make the adjustment without your glasses on. Most people I know who wear glasses shoot with glasses, but you'll have to try it. It' best to try that while you are looking through the scope at a light colored wall. Don't worry about the whole image being in focus, focus the reticle first. Once that is done, the parallax wheel is used to bring the downrange image into focus. When that happens, you should have a focussed reticle and a focussed image. If you don't use the parallax adjustment, meaning shooting when it's blurry, it can contribute to inaccuracy. If you learn to use the wheel and the range demarkations on it can also be used a s a rough range finder. Focus, read off the range on the wheel. I hope this helps. PJ

@@WiscAirGunners Thank you for your kind reply. I might have had my terms mixed up. When I said parallax I was meaning the focus ring where you look into the scope. Sorry, but you did enlightened me properly. I never needed glasses in my 40's and had perfect vision. Slowly with age it got a lot worse. T

@WiscAirGunners
@WiscAirGunners 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't sen the FFP in person, but I do know some specifics. First, it's First Focal Plane, so the reticle will grow and shrink with the zoom. That often means it will be tiny at low magnification and thick at higher magnification. I do have a Titan, and I can say that one is usable at all magnification levels. Second, it's a dirty reticle. That means it has a bunch of hold over and windage points marked below the center line. If I get my hands on one, I'll publish testing results.

@WiscAirGunners

I have a SideShot and a EagleVision. Both are very good with the GoPro Hero 7 Black. The EagleVision is easier to move from scope to scope. The SideShot is not permanently mounted, but it does have a ring that goes on the scope that makes installation very sure and quick. The SideShot is a 50/50 prism, and great is open fields. It was designed by prairie dog shooters in Utah. The EagleVision comes in 50/50 or 25/75, which has an advantage if you shoot in the woods. I can recommend both. I have both, and I use both, depending on the application. If you go EagleVision I have an affiliate link, and it helps the channel if you use it. eaglevisioncam.com?ref=1297

Question: In your videos the Helix retical seems almost invisible where the Optisan seems very clear. What can you say about that?
@WiscAirGunners
@WiscAirGunners 4 жыл бұрын
Kurt Cira the EVX is FFP, so at maximum magnification the reticle is proportionately thick. The Helix is SFP, and the reticle is, well, just right for me. I have bad, old man eyes. I need cheaters to read menus and use big fonts for texting. I use the “fast focus” as they call it to focus the reticle for my eye, and the parallax wheel to adjust the down range view. I choose to set up the GoPro to match the down range focus, and it just looks past the reticle. I could set the reticle to be less sharp for me, and you’d see it more clearly, but I didn’t in this case.
