What should have been a fairly simple replacement of the element in a desolder pump, went wrong. Can we sort it out?

Thank for this video I just pull out my unit as as luck would have it, it didn't heat up. I will be ordering a new element and with the help of your video I will be able to get it working again. Thanks again ....from the US.

Dude many thanks I have now fixed my gun, almost binned it due to no temperature control after replacing the heater element. Thanks again for the advise buddy.

These Chinese pumps have a problem with wrong size resistor for current limiting in the PCB. Once, when working, the PCB blew right in my hand and the smoke escaped. I found the schematic drawing somewhere in the internet, and it turned out that current limiting resistor for the zener diode in the PCB are just 1/4 W size but upon calculation it is evident that it should dissipate about 1W of power. No wonder, it blew and took the zener with it also. So, I replaced the zener and the resistor with larger (2W, or two 1W in parallel, do not remember now) one, there was still enough space for that. Now I am more confident about it not blowing again in my hand. True, my unit is not the S-993A but the S-997P. But I think the PCB is probably about the same.

That is one benefit of the station types - the temperature display!

Thanks for the info, I have the same de-solder pump. I've ordered an element just in case. I should have it by the 31st of Jan. LOL.

Very wise. Despite the element failures, it's a very good tool indeed. I use it frequently.

I think I'm right in saying these units are sold to work at 220V? My house mains is NEVER below 245V and often peaks at 250V. I have a couple of 220V items (hot glue gun etc.) that I run from a 218V supply as I can't imagine they'd last long otherwise. How do you get on with your vacuum gun in that respect? If my assumptions are correct could that explain the failure of x2 elements so far?

WELL DONE! Super observation, I had missed that. Yes it is marked 220V, so that will be why elements are not lasting well. I will arrange for a step-down transformer.

My pump has died - the heater is fine. How did you remove the temp control knob to get the PCB out? Does the knob just pull off?

I've never tried but I would expect the control to simply pull off. You will have to be a bit careful though since access around the edges of the control is a bit limited.

when you remove the pcb the knob fall off, this is the best way.

I disassembled mine to replace the cord (swapped it to the Brazilian outlet standard) but am having trouble re-positioning the temperature dial so it corresponds to the actual temperature. My multimeter thermometer doesn't seem to be able to help me with that (temperature jumps way too much), do you have any tips so I can sync my dial with the actual temperature of the gun? Thanks in advance mate!

The multimeter sensor is probably a type K thermocouple, which should easily be able to manage the 400C or so that this heats to. Perhaps try a different meter / thermocouple. Getting good thermal contact is important, perhaps fit it on with something like a jubilee clip. But I thought the temperature dial only fitted on in one place? May be wrong.

@@video99couk I believe my thermocouple is not getting good enough contact with the hot tip of the gun, which is why I am having problems when it comes to getting accurate temperature reads. Regarding the dial, it has a hexagonal fit so it does not, in fact, fits in only one orientation. If you don't mind the question - with your gun turned off and the dial locked in the absolute minimum position - does it sit with the 350 indicator right underneath the little plastic nub indicator from the gun? Thanks in advance!

My first de-soldering station cost around £800 pounds in 1992 It was from RS components but I think it was really a Pace. Things are so cheap nowadays, I guess that's thanks to internet marketing.

I have an RS soldering station which is also Antex. Desoldering stations are much cheaper than they used to be but the quality is only adequate on this one.

The thing i would want to find out is the reason the original element died in the first place. Is the temp controller board a bit dodgy, or bad soldering on the pot. I like a solid reason when my stuff goes poof lol.

The first element definitely went open circuit. The second element meters out fine now, but I'm assuming that it has an intermittent internal connection, probably a partial break in the element wire. The board doesn't seem to have any bad soldering, but the lack of through-plating is a bit poor. You can see why it's cheaper than a Hakko.

Yeah from your video i got the point why my heat element has been dead right now even i rarely use it. It is logic because the my board didnt controll well my heat element so it got overheated.
