Luckily for this conversation santana smoke , you are talking to someone who DID LIVE THERE before The Aylesbury and Heygate Estates. NO there were NOT "Flats" but old-fashioned "2 up 2 Down" Terrace Houses, which you still have in some Northern Towns, and it made a wonderful COMMUNITY. As I said our houses were knocked down to build those damned 1960's Estates and before they were built we could go out at 3am without a care in the World and the newsvendor left his MONEYBAG in the street overnight for people to buy his newspapers while he collected the money the next morning. THAT is how safe that area was.

I am sure you're tight but I lived in that 24 Flay block until 1983 right on top of Walworth Road overlooking The Market and never had any problems at all though over those 29 years in my birthplace,I heard of 2 murders including "The Bell" Pub. Then,I knew nothing of The Richardsons from Camberwell.

I never heard anyone then or since reminisce about it though I HAVE heard endless Adults reminisce about East Lane Market and the old flat I left in 1983 was @ "2.40" on the left. 3rd Floor on the side. The very thing Hitler was afraid of has crept in by stealth - Marxism. Everything has been dumbed down in the name of equality and fairness. Gone are the wonderful people and communities shown in this film. What could have been built like, and transformed into something like Knightsbridge or Kensington quickly became an area no one would want to live. High rise was a fashion mistake that failed decdes ago. Everyone knows it is leading to dystopia.

Haha. Mate. Britain was riddled with snobbery. Anyone who couldn't speak it well wouldn't have been allowed on TV. There would have been floods of complaints.

All i can think is after the war they needed to replace all the dead londeners with new faces, even if they were from a completely different culture. As long as they pay taxes the government couldn't care less about community and the indigenous Londeners.

The area was 100% White British when I was born and lived there other than The Irish Community and the odd restauranteur or Ice Cream Man and my 24 Flat Block was all British. NOW? NO White/British in the Block so from 100% to 0%. I would say that is a pretty significant change:) I moved 40 years ago in 1983 just 11 miles to The Suburbs that were mentioned.

Hi. Before this year and Covid, I , often went back, nostalgically, to East Street and, of course, it's totally changed as The Elephant has. They compulsorily purchased my Great Aunt's 5 house to build THe Aylesbury which combined with THe Heygate was, then, the largest Housing Estate in Northern Europe, but luckily we were moved to that small 24 Flat Block nearby where you could enter freely. Now there are 2 Security systems and some grilled balconies..

My first job thru' the Summer 1970 holidays was working for 7 weeks at Gamages ( as large as Selfridges) between Leather Lane and Hatton Garden.Then I worked there every Saturday morning in a different Department as Weekend relief...

I lived@ 2'41 overlooking that market with Old Kent Road(MILLWALL) at one end and a bust High Street at the other. Some flats now cost £1,000,000+ at The Elephant and Castle. and he was right to be HOWEVER now they are knocking ALL those "new" Estates down and building nicer residencies though most are not affordable so ANOTHER wave of Londoners are forced to move.I moved to Bexley which is 11 miles away 40 years ago in 1983 like so many others.
