We got a call for a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Elephant Hill with a broken front suspension part. We headed out to check it out. With the front end being mostly plastic we couldn't safely carry it out. So we got it moved so traffic could continue on and we ordered parts. The next day Mike and Shawn headed in to replace the parts as I headed up on the mountain by Old LaSal to get a truck and trailer out. After replacing the front cv shaft on the truck and getting it unstuck I headed down the mountain. On the way I got a call for another jeep with clutch issues further into Elephant Hill. So I called and let Shawn and Mike know about it after they got the one jeep back together to go find the next. So I went to the shop and loaded the buggy up and headed in to help them. By the time I had got there they were at the base of the big climb. So I helped another disabled rig make it up then helped them. It was an eventful couple days but everything went pretty smooth. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Well we knew Rory was good, but driving a vehicle through there without a clutch takes a special kind of skill! I’ve driven on highway with a failed hydraulic clutch system, so starting in gear and clutchless up and down shifting, not a real problem, in my car, one I’ve done thousands of miles in, and even that was not totally straightforward, jumping in an unfamiliar vehicle and driving it through some of the toughest terrain clutchless, wow! I doff my cap to you Rory!

@@davestevens4263 Kinda me too. It was on same Elephant Hill trail. Rory and Shawn went to get a white jeep Cherokee, all that was holding the front end was a steering linkage. So they removed it and winched the front axle up on the mater trailer then had to back up to the Jeep and pull it up and set the front end on the axle. I didn't know why the front wheels were turning but the rears were not in that switchback turn. Thinking My 4 x 4 can't do that. So, if I want to learn more about that rig I had better subscribe and hit the black bell. I have learned a lot of terminology and the How Too's. Where's the suspension say that? Guess the other trailhawk that was with him on the original run, plus every single return trip couldn't handle it either? Where's all the hate when a stock wrangler breaks down doing some lite offroading? Same clearances, just different driving styles and creature comforts. And are you suggesting that 90% of the trail to that point was paved road? He nearly completed the trail if it weren't for the mistake that caused the breakage.

Elephant Hill is fine for stock vehicles...let me guess you think all trails require 40s, tons and double locked? He was doing fine until he took a bad line with too much panic throttle. I don't know a single wrangler owner that upgraded their rigs that aren't constantly fixing broken parts.

@@FearlessTrailhawk People who don't get out and do these trails just don't know what it takes. The Trailhawk looked like it had very low clearance compared to many vehicles in these videos, but it has the same clearance as my son's Xterra, which did just fine on this trail. I was in a Sequoia which also did great, although with 5 more inches of clearance. Elephant Hill is a fun trail, and if it's done right, many stock vehicles can do it.

The dude with the Grand Cherokee definitely has the right attitude! Ignoring all the issues which have plagued the newer Fiat Grand Cherokees it looks like a good overlanding rig for mild trails. With a Wrangler if he wants to stay with a Jeep or even a 4Runner for more moderate trails I think he would have even more fun. I would be hesitant to take that Grand Cherokee on anything with rocks with its ground clearance, at least not without full skids but even then it would be scrap city. Nice recovery Rory & team! Moab's best.

Rory just a note on Jeep WK2 and the new WL like that one there is a neutral button on the mode selector switch that you hit with a pin to put the vehicle in neutral for towing, so it won’t destroy the electronic rear differential and transfer case. It doesn’t appear as though he has air suspension or if he does, he hasn’t moved it to Offroad to to give more ground clearance. Some of the early sales of the WL they didn’t have the air suspension parts so they were sold without it.

Almost 2 hours from Moab (each way) to the bottom of Elephant Hill. Going up and then down, not difficult; coming back up a challenge for unprepared drivers, stock tires (not deflated), & no lockers & no lift. Makes a difference when Rory's crew is there to 'mend vehicles' & get them out. It's a gargantuan public service that takes all day & these guys should be complimented to the hilt. Last year we pulled up two lite trucks that couldn't make the last steep push; (we were coming down), & put our nose to hill, connected a rope to each vehicles (we backed up) and pulled them out, one at a time. Rory doing it from much further down the hill, is a much more difficult task. Amazing the moves TM makes going round the tight turns & corners. The public so lucky to have these 'ace' gentlemen around.

Are you sure the THs tires weren't deflated? Because i was kinda there...they were at or just below 20psi. I partially agree though, i am not a fan of those stock tires on 18" rims, can't air down much more than 20 with having issues burping out air when it folds over rocks. (Especially with the extra weight 9f the 4xe) But it would help you to understand the traction system on the new jeeps...it locks the rear when in certain traction modes. This new driver just needed to be more patient, otherwise he'd been up and out just fine with no issues.

@@FearlessTrailhawk I apologize if that was you, or you were there. My intention was to speak to the audience re tires, lift, lockers & ability to get out. From the view in the video I couldn't tell but just guessed, and I should have clarified my words. Some 12-13 years ago we began to annually go into Devil's Kitchen or Bobby Joe (or one near by) (with the exception of 2 years Covid). Last year though seared into me, what happens when people have the wrong vehicles & are not prepared. 3 from Virginia went through Beef Basin, dropped in, got to SOB Hill (& they told me later) they spent 7 hours getting 3 vehicles through that spot, and ended up camping in the dark on the road. The next day they struggled to the bottom of E Hill and spent 2 hours getting 3 vehicles up, but the first two couldn't make the near last 'big climb" and so we pulled them up. The third had a longer body and gunned it and made it. All three scraped badly on the ciimb out, we waited nearly two hours and two Navtec drivers waited at the bottom (trying to get up) while this took place. So I apologize, this was still in my memory, I'm happy the jeep was able to get fixed and get out.

@@stephenlewis8143 That sound like a very different trail and situation. I've wheel either the KL and WK2 platform for over 5 years. Elephant Hill is not out of their capabilities. I was the white stock+tires WK2 that was shown briefly. The WL was with me. He is a newish driver and i was doing my best to reign his heavy throttle foot in. If he'd waited 30 seconds for me to get out of his way and spot him up the ledge, he'd not have smashed his control arm and would have driven out all on his own. His air suspension was also quirky after the trail fix and was stuck in normal ride height, but it righted itself once he got back up to the top of the hill and allowed him to raise it up the 2" for offroad. Imho, that climb out is actually one of the easier sections of the trail, it just has the mental aspect of the drop offs. And i'm not seeing anyone saying that stockish JK was out of place...when it has roughly the same clearance as the WL.

@@FearlessTrailhawk I hope you looked at my previous note, I meant to apologize. The route from the bottom W side of EH changes over time, & the last steep pitch changes also. For newbies, they either don't remember or don't know re the platform that greets the driver once they top out. They can then backup and then go up the last pitch & then in minute or two top out. I'm no expert, but I've been in there enough, and I've seen vehicles (that in my view) should not be in there; they scrape at most any instance & they have to stop and put rocks down for the slightest lip climb. SOB hill can be another big challenge for vehicles & we have aided some at that spot (mostly just talking them through options). Speaking of what vehicles can make it up, over, through the rough spots to Devils Kitchen & then back up the w side of EH. A lot of vehicles could arguably do it, & many would sustain degrees of damage & so it's best in my view to have a safe & sustainable drive & capable vehicle on the route. Years ago, the last climb, lots of loose rock and dirt; without lockers, for 2dr. Jeeps or lite trucks they would stall out on the climb. In the last 2 years (post Covid) the route has been pretty 'clean'. If you think stock vehicles on 30 or 32 inch tires can make the route to Devils Kitchen & then have no problem on the 'route back' and then up EH, then have that opinion if you wish. You obviously know what your are doing and most others also. In hindsight I could have just complimented Rory & left it at that. Happy Trails.

@@stephenlewis8143 I saw the apology, and i appreciate that, but as i'm not a local and was not familiar with all the nicknames for each section of that trail i had wrongly assumed you were talking about different trails and not EH. So that was my bad. My point was that despite your belief that neither of us should have been there because you seem to believe that this trail is above our capabilities simply because of a single driver error that resulted in a trail break (i know very few wranglers that wheel regularly that haven't had a trail break). I assure you that it is not. Both of our vehicles had adequate clearance and were prepared for the trail. (no, i don't make a habit of bringing a spare...everything...on every trail for 'just incase'...do you really carry an entire spare jeep in the back to replace any part that possibly may break?) We only stacked rocks on a single 'turtle' rock on the way to the squeeze, that was it. I was also trying to say that, in my multiple runs of EH, the exit climbs back out are more mentally challenging because of the ledges and otherwise a much 'easier' section of trail once one understands where the trail is and how to not drive off the edge. And its not simply "just my opinion" that stock vehicles have no problems doing the entirety of EH trail and loop, that is my experience, on multiple occasions. Yes, its not as easy as a jeep on 40s/ect....but heavy mods are not needed for most trails...just a good driver mod and line choice. But i lead stock rides frequently so its much easier for me to understand stock capabilities than some of you guys who have modded your rigs and can't fathom stock rigs doing the same trails as upi. Yes, its slower for us, but we still get through the trail with no damage, unless in this clear case of operator error. I'm sorry if my stock-ish jeep doing the same 'hard' trails as you has offended you. And i apologize if my defense of stock rigs has triggered a trauma response from a bad experience. I will leave you alone now. Have a good day mate.

If you haven't had the opportunity to go to Moab yet it's about 80 miles from Moab to the start of Elephant Hill. The last time we were there you had to get a free day permit because they only allow so many vehicles per day. Neat place to visit.

I've done Elephant Hill in a Wrangler. Some models of Grand Cherokee previous to 2024 are very capable offroad but I don't think I would take one on Elephant Hill. And he wasn't climbing the steepest part either. I've driven a number of vehicles into the shop with a clutch that wouldn't disengage- pick the highest gear that you can start it in, start it in gear and drive until you have to stop then kill the engine.

When the clutch gave it up on me, I had over a twenty mile drive the rest of way home though many intersections. That's where you find out if you can drive a manual transmission vehicle. But it depends on how the clutch failed.

The grand models changed in 22...lol. It wasn't the steepness that did him in, it was his impatience and lack of throttle control lined up into a bad rock. Otherwise he would have driven up and out just fine...like he did after it was repaired. Elephant Hill is stockable, just not as easy, you have to pay attention and pick your lines in a few places. Just because you think 40s and double locked is required... doesn't mean it is. Heck, I've even done it in a 2019 Cherkoee...no damage or breaks....and now a couple times in my WK2. 🤷

@@FearlessTrailhawk I've done it in my JLU Sport with 33" tires and 2" lift, basically Rubicon height. There are one or two steep spots climbing out that will challenge a stock vehicle, and we hit one or two spots further down the trail going in that would challenge ground clearance of a Grand Cherokee. My daughter has a Grand Cherokee and we've taken it on some challenging trails but not Elephant Hill. My Wrangler has better articulation than a Grand Cherokee but I still had one wheel off the ground in one location.. We picked a slightly better line and made it with no drama.
