This is an awesome video. My gs is still learning the rear end awareness to do the left and back up a bit to keep heel position. I can see the gears turning in her head as she turns, stops, backs up, stops, etc...each step is a process still. Hopefully with enough reps she builds muscle memory and it starts to look more natural.

What I like about ur training method is that u break the exercise into small parts & then join them together !! This helps us to understand how to do every part of the exercise in detail. I have a question. U said that we can hold the leash ( while doing heelwork in either of our hands). Can u please demonstrate what should be an ideal hand placement ( both hands) While doing heel on leash ? Of late, quite a number of training with IGP background tend to keep their hand farther than the dog's left ears and heel as if they r doing a "march past" !! This looks a bit odd. I have seen a few trainers at the Crufts literally 'sticking ' their left hand on their thigh pockets too !! Am a bit confused. Can u please make a short video on how should a participant walk & keep his hands while doing obedience exercises heelwork exercises , both on & off the leash ? I feel this video will help a lot of people in improving their own heelwork during obedience competition.

Thanks! I believe you can have your hands the way I'm demonstrating in the video and you can have both hands in the center holding the leash. Like the women in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eaqEkrGQpuCop4k.html

Dear nate, thank you very much for your great work. I find your videos and your personal way of explaining difficult issues in a simple way really wonderful! I live in Germany and have a 6 month old PWD dog and have been training with your videos since the beginning. She manages to keep eye contact for a very long time now, so I wanted to teach her focused heel. I am just starting with her learning to walk in the center position and look at me. But how do I get her to keep looking at me when I want to reward her? When I say yes, she immediately looks at my hand and watches how I fetch the reward from my bag and give it to her and she only looks at me again when she has eaten up in peace.
@NateSchoemer

My pleasure. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. That's okay because she knows she has to look at you to hear the marker. If you want duration without her looking away for the reward, you can use verbal praise.

@@ivanhacks e-collar is not the only form of correction that can be used in this training !!and to think that the correction would have to be heavy-handed in order to get the point through to the animal, just shows you do not know how to properly use correction in the first place. I'll also add that the e-collar is not a magic wand ,to fix all of the problems that you think you can't do otherwise, it's just a tool and should only be used so in a way to form a bridge of communication with the animal

The key is to start training food refusal BEFORE you meet strangers. Just like you dont teach recall off leash near a busy street. Common sense. Baby steps. Teach the dog he gets NO food that you dont give him. Reward leaving food on the floor, table, where ever. You dont have to correct the dog at all. Food on floor, cover with hand if he goes for it. Ask for sit and look to you. When he stops going for the food on the floor, reward with treat from your hand. Its his choice to obey you and leave the food alone to get reward, or keep trying for it and get nothing. Not hard, but build on it constantly in many locations.

@@ivanhacks keep making assumptions. I myself actually strongly advocate for the use of e-collars, I use them to train the wolf dogs that I work with off-leash, I did not say the e-collar was bad.. I said you're mind set proves you do not properly know how to use it, and should not be doing so.

@@ivanhacks you dont have to jerk a dog around or use an ecollar to get obedience or teach food refusal. IF you have a resource guarding food agressive dog, maybe, but what the hay! You can teach a puppy food refusal with ZERO correction and only positive reinforcement.

Hi Mr. Schoemer, i have a german shepherd and 7 months old. it's very eager to get the reward while doing similar exercises. sometimes my wrist is in his mouth :) is there any way to fix this?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
If he's aggressively biting at the food, then a trick is to hold the food in your fist. if he tries biting at the food, then the hand stays closed. Once he's being gentle, then slowly start to open your hand. Instantly close it again, if he starts to bite too hard. Repeat until he knows that he needs to take the food nicely. The idea is basic cause and effect. I hope this helps! In addition, the way you hold the food will make a difference as well. Check out this video and jump to 5:25 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aqmDoruAtryspYU.html I hope this helps. Cheers!

Most dog’s low food motivation is caused by a few things: Either the dog has been overfed, free-fed, given very high value food such as cooked steak, or sometimes just feeding out of a bowl can cause this. As a result, the dog just doesn’t care that much about getting fed as a reward. A common technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner. Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time

Nate when using luring, do you use the treats on top of his regular food for the day or substitute some of it for training purposes?
@NateSchoemer

I take from the dogs daily rations, so I don't overfeed. The vital essentials freeze-dried dog food is what I use when I'm training my dogs. Since they are already trained, I don't have to use as many treats. However, with a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with Stella and Chewy's freeze-dried coated kibble. It's great food and most dogs love it! You can see most of the products that I use with my dogs here: www.nateschoemer.com/store I hope this helps! )
