In WW2 my father, Leslie Barton from Liverpool, was a Captain in the King's Own Royal Regiment.
In my teens we lived alone together. Occasionally he told me about his experiences during the war. He shared wonderful stories of comradeship between soldiers as well as harrowing accounts of battlefield.
He told me about his wounding on the beaches of France during the Normandy Landing. A bomb exploded close to him, his batman was killed instantly and a piece of burning shrapnel made a huge hole in his side. He said he remembered looking down from a distance above at his wounded body laying on the ground by a tree. He said the memory of that experience changed his life.
It took two years in hospital for my father to recover enough to walk again. During his convalescence he taught the other recovering soldiers in hospital, electricity.
The surgeon left a piece of shrapnel close to my father’s spine which he said was too difficult to remove with the risk of being paralyzed. This shrapnel caused my father pain walking the rest of his life, but he never complained about it to anyone - ever. When I was young he played football with me like all fathers do. It wasn’t until I was older I understood how painful that must have been for him to do.
In my early 20’s I took my father to France and we spent the day looking across the peaceful beaches of Normandy together.
My father died of cancer in 2000. He choose the simple wooden cross of a soldier for his memorial as he said he felt in his heart he was a soldier until his last.
If he had been alive today we would have laid a wreath at the town's War Memorial, as he did every single year at Armistice.
My Father loved Elgar's music, especially "Nimrod" and "Pomp and Circumstance March No.1".
This is for you, dad.

I just lost my dad a month ago very suddenly from a brain aneurysm. He was a orchestral conductor, and I know this was a favorite piece of his too. I’m not a musician, but I’m wanting to teach myself piano and eventually learn this piece for him. It’s great learning about your dad too, he must have been incredible. Our fathers might even be bonding over a mutual love for this piece right now. Thanks so much for sharing 💕

Beautiful, somber piece, first time ever hearing it admittedly. My grandfather, Neville Fearn, was part of the Sherwood Rangers during WWII and likely fought further down the beach from your dad in the Normandy invasion. Amazing group of men to have endured through that experience. Anyways, I'm glad to have found your channel and am now a proud subscriber!

Greetings from Japan. I always enjoy your channel! Thank you for sharing your story and this sweet piece. While listening to your playing and reading the discription, I was remembering about my grand father who passed away last year. He also survived WWII and always told me how he was lucky to survive from torpedoes and how people in Philippines and his subordinates were nice to him even in the war time. I left my hometown 4 years ago, so I wish I could hear my granpa's stories more... I feel so nostalgic now... Anyway, thank you Paul, love your piano!

It is vital that we never forget those glorious dead who sacrificed there all so future generations could live in relative peace and freedom..This piece always brings them to my mind and I think it is a magnificent gesture that you play it in memory of of them, no matter how far throughput this world their final resting place may be. I have a peculiar but pleasing thought that these musical notes will vibrate in the air both far and wide and whisper to each and every one lost in man's bloody wars that we do indeed remember them. Thank you for sharing your various videos with us. You are a true inspiration..

Sorry to give you a thumbs down on this, Paul, but your interpretation really isn't to your normal standard. It sounds pedestrian and disjointed to my ears, especially with the drawn-out quavers (eighth notes) lasting almost as long as the crochets (quarter notes). This very stereotypical English music needs oh-so-much legato! A feeling of flowing, like a broad river anticipating its imminent release into the sea. BUT, thanks as always for posting - and I hope you'll take this as intended, constructive criticism.
