I feel like Armie narrating Elio's lines matches the symbolism of them calling each other by their names, like they're so much a part of each other that they're two people living as one.

@@MahaHMA this is the exact quote from the book. Well, i have read the book at least 4 times and i know it by every page. This is after their kiss on Monet's berm as much as i remember. The literal meaning is that the signs he was giving might be small but the reason behind them was huge. So he said he had to put two and two (very small digits) together and come up with a number bigger than infinity, (huge like his love. )

I'm 32 years old guy and every time I read this I'm in tears, it's so powerful: “I'm like you,' he said. 'I remember everything.' I stopped for a second. If you remember everything, I wanted to say, and if you are really like me, then before you leave tomorrow, or when you’re just ready to shut the door of the taxi and have already said goodbye to everyone else and there’s not a thing left to say in this life, then, just this once, turn to me, even in jest, or as an afterthought, which would have meant everything to me when we were together, and, as you did back then, look me in the face, hold my gaze, and call me by your name”

My biggest fear is never being able to feel or have this kind of love Update: a month after writing this I found my own Oliver. People like him exist, I promise. Keep searching. Another update: a year and a half later and he’s gone, not forever but for now and that’s painful enough. Until later, my Oliver Yet another update: since people are wondering and I continue to get email notifications of replies, I feel the need to write something more. I wrote this comment at a terribly confusing time in my life where I felt very lost and alone. I stumbled upon this story and felt incredibly alienated, like I would never find what I was looking for. Unfortunately, whilst I had thought I had finally found my great love which was going to last forever - living and dying with each other, it appears I was somewhat wrong. The boy I feel in love with was truly wonderful and we had the most beautiful time together, the kind of time you could never imagine having with someone, the kind of time reserved only for characters such as Elio and Oliver. However, we were just so young and when you're young forever seems like an awfully long time. In a time of growth for both of us, being so attached and so in love makes it hard to find yourself. So it ended. And now, over these past months, I have felt the pain of Elio when Oliver left, yet I feel gratitude in now knowing that this love exists even if I may no longer have it. And so it goes; He came. He left. Nothing else had changed. I had not changed. Yet nothing would be the same. All that remains is a dream-making and strange remembrance.

I am reading the book right now and walking around the house like a depressed zombie because Oliver is leaving and I have realized I will not be able to find my Oliver in first place.. Forget about losing him.. At such time I realise what Elio meant by not minding Oliver leaving because he met him and that's what matters. That is what holds more value than the inevitable circumstances to come. The fact that it happened.. I made myself cry again brb

i am truly scared that i will never experience something as beautiful, raw, and true as this kind of love. to even have a glimpse of this love in my life would be a blessing. to find someone i can call a big part of me, would be a blessing. to find the stars with someone would be a blessing. to call someone by your own name would be a blessing. there is no one else, but that person who is able to be called by your name.

J. When it happens, you will know it and not know it at the same time; your feelings will overwhelm you and consume you. You will have not felt with anyone else happiness of its kind ever before and want only to be reunited with him for it to surge again. You will not think it a blessing but a curse, your every thought given over to him; what others say or think an irritation - they are bystanders to the only event of any importance in your life - him.

Time makes us sentimental. Perhaps, in the end, it is because of time that we suffer. He came. He left. Nothing else had changed. I had not changed. Yet nothing would be the same. As I sat there working on transcriptions at my round table in the morning, what I would have settled for was not his friendship, not anything. To look up and find you there. For the day will come soon enough when I’ll look up and you’ll no longer be there. If he knew, if he only knew that I was giving him every chance to put two and two together and come up with a number bigger than infinity. This felt special. Like showing someone your private chapel, your secret Haunt. This is where I dreamed of you before you came into my life. I wanted him to remember the morning on Monet’s berm when I’d kissed him not the first but the second time. Can’t stand the silence. I need to speak to you. Grow up. I’ll see you at midnight. “I’m so glad you came”. “Call me by your name and I’ll call you by mine.” For you in silence, somewhere in Italy in the mid-eighties. I wanted someone to look through his books one day, open up this tiny volume of Armance, and ask, Tell me who was in silence, somewhere in Italy in the mid-eighties? Just two words “Cor cordium, heart of hearts”. Are you sorry I came? I’d hold you and kiss you if I could. - Me too Light of my eyes, light of the world. That’s what you are. This was the best person I’d ever known in my life. I had chosen him well. We had found the stars, you and I. And this is given once only. You are my homecoming. When I’m with you and we’re well together, there is nothing more I want. Don’t let him have a life other than the life I know he has with us, with me. Don’t let me lose him. Whom else would I ever be able to call by my name? There is a spot on via Santa Maria dell’Anima that I revisit every time I’m in Rome. I’ll stare at it for a second, and suddenly it’ll all come back to me. I had just thrown up that night and on the way back to the bar you kissed me. That kiss is still imprinted there, thank goodness. It’s all I have from you. This and your shirt. I call this shirt “Billowy,” you wore it on your first day here, it has more of you than me. “I remember everything.” If you remember everything, I wanted to say, and if you are really like me, then before you leave tomorrow, or when you’re just ready to shut the door of the taxi and have already said goodbye to everyone else and there’s not a thing left to say in this life, then, just this once, turn to me, even in jest, or as an afterthought, which would have meant everything to me when we were together, and, as you did back then, look me in the face, hold my gaze, and Call Me by Your Name.

nsquared703 I admit I too was put off when I heard "Oliver" narrating Elio's thoughts at first but when you think about it, it really just follows the whole theme they've established in the movie. Calling each other by their own names symbolizes Oliver and Elio merging into one being and the ultimate love they have not only for one another, but also for each their own self, so Oliver telling Elio's story only compliments this and adds another layer to it. I think it's a nice touch.

This film made me not want to watch other movies anymore. I just can't move on. I am still broken and devastated. I still feel the longing, the sadness, the desire to see someone you haven't seen in a while. The ending still got me crying and overthinking. I am so in love with Elio and Oliver.

The love in the book and movie is insane. The fact that Elio and Oliver with both remember that summer, the hiding it from other people and the acceptance from the family. Anyone who watches this movie (gay, straight, etc.) craves this love from someone. That summer that these two shared would break both of them and it will always be with them.

I have something similar living in the U. S. This happened in July on a summer night at a suburb close to Chicago. I met a guy at a friend's party who was visiting from Mexico on a tourist visa. He is really handsome and very manly, I was crushing on him really bad at the party but didn't know if he was into guys. We exchanged phone numbers and told him I could show him around the city. We started chatting for several nights and then one night we went to McDonald's and he said let's go to the park, this was around 10pm. At the park we sat there eating and talking about life, my life In the suburbs, his ranch life in Mexico. The conversation continued until 2:35am and then he held my hand and we stared at each other for a long time and then he kissed me. After that we hung out every day, went hiking, took him to some awesome places in Chicago. He was visiting on a visa, so I knew the day would come when he had to go back to Mexico. I tried to make the best out of every single day. We went dancing and people would say "you guys are a sweet couple" we went to restaurants, we slept in my jeep wrangler several nights in October hugging each other because the cold was coming and doing other things if you know what I mean, he would get home at 6am lol. We danced like fools in the forest after a few drinks, we took a blanket to a park one night and slept there, the rain woke us up and we ran to my jeep. We could not stay away from each other, I cried with him one night because he would be leaving in November 12. He hugged me and said not to worry that he would come back July of next year. While all of this was happening, my family didnt know I was gay, so this motivated me to come out to my family and they were very supportive and happy for me. A week before he was leaving I took a risk. I bought my plane ticket to Mexico knowing that I would not be able to go back to the U. S in a long time. When I told him about me buying my plane ticket, he was like "are you crazy? You are the craziest guy ive met" and he hugged me for a lonnnnng time and said he was so happy but to make sure I was ready. My mom wanted to meet the guy I was crazy about, she met him and really liked him. She asked him to take care of me, and warned him about how crazy I was lol he told her "tell me about it" He told her that he was a hard worker and that he saw a future with me, that I would be living with him and that he would take care of me. Guess what, I've been with him for 4 years and it was the best risk I have taken. I live with him at a ranch in Jalisco, with the most beautiful landscapes and his two dogs. He had been through a lot and seeing him sleep in peace on my shoulder while in the plane going back to Mexico was the best feeling. I felt peace knowing that I made the right decision.

It's incredibly real and holds nothing back. It's such a simple story...but has this spellbinding quality. They are planning a sequel which is great news...but I think this is going to be a tragic story when it's all completed. Mr. Perlman's speech is the only comfort to the raw pain that heartbreak causes. It's just so amazing.

Time makes us sentimental. Perhaps, in the end it's because of time that we suffer. He came. He left, nothing else had changed. I had not changed, Yet nothing would be the same. As, I sat there working on transcriptions of my round table in the morning. What I would have settled for was not his friendship. Not anything, to look up and find you there. For the day will come soon enough, and I'll look up. And you will no longer be there. If he knew if he only knew, that I was giving him every chance to put two and two together and come up with a bigger number than infinity. This felt special, like showing someone your private chapel or secret haunt. This is where I dreamed of you before you came into my life. I wanted him to remember the morning on Monet's berm, when I'd kissed him not the first, but the second time. Can't stand the silence, I need to speak to you. Grow up, I'll see you at midnight, I'm so glad you came. Call me by your name, and I'll call you by mine. For you in silence. Somewhere in Italy in the mid 80s. I wanted someone to look through his books one day, open up this tiny volume of Armance and ask: Tell me who was in silence somewhere in Italy in the mid 80s? Just two words "Cor Cordium" heart of hearts. Are you sorry I came? I'd hold you and kiss you if I could. Me too. Light of my eyes. Light of the world. That's what you are. This was the best person I'd ever known in my life. I had chosen him well. We had found the stars, you and I, and this is given once only. You are my homecoming, when I'm with you and we're well together there's nothing more I want. Don't let him have a life other than the life I know he has with us, with ME. Don't let me lose him. Whom else would I ever be able to call by my name? There's a spot on via Santa Maria del Anima that I revisit every time I'm in Rome. I stare at it for just a second and suddenly it'll all come back to me. I had just thrown up that night on the way back to the bar. You kissed me. That kiss is still imprinted there. Thank goodness. That's all I have from you, this, and your shirt. I call this shirt billowy; you wore it on your first day here. It has more of you than me. If you remember everything, I wanted to say, and if you really are like me, before you leave tomorrow. Or when you're just ready to shut the door of the taxi and have already said goodbye to everyone else and there's not a thing left to say in this life. Then just this once, turn to me, even in jest, or as an afterthought which would have meant everything to me when we were together, and as you did back then. Look me in the face, hold my gaze and call me by your name.

At first it was jarring, listening to Armie's voice when it is Elio's point of view, in the audio version. I have decided that it could not have been more perfect, because as we hear Armie's voice it reminds us that it's Elio thinking/remembering Oliver.
