One of my favorite ever!! In the 60's we listened so much music from Brazil but as well from Italy and France besides our latin American singers and Spanish, of course!! as well as American and British. Such a great mix of sounds!! One of the most beautiful songs from Jobim is Double rainbow! A must!

He usually sang what he did, not as a singer as those great solists that you reacts at but as a composer that was admired and came out with his songs. He as an international icon. Elis Regina is a history teller, one of our bests. She is a chameleon, can sing what she wants, she sings with swing, with passion, with joy, what she wats. And as I said, Tom is one fo the greatest.

It´s mataphoric for the whole experience of one´s life. Pure poetry and magic, a marterpiece. The arrengements are from César Camargo Mariano, who was Elis´s husband. He also plays the piano.

Tom Jobim began to compose the song, only on guitar, in March 1972, at his farm in Poço Fundo, Rio de Janeiro. The inspiration came after a tiring day working on “Matita Perê”. Once, Tom mentioned in an interview that he composed the song at a time of great sadness. The artist was hopeless, drank a lot, complained that no one listened to his music and said he was depressed. At the time, he suffered from health problems and reflected on the completion of his projects, which conflicted with his lack of interest in everything.

However, just like it happens with, say, the Girl from Ipanema, the Portuguese version mostly refers to other imagery and is even more beautiful than the English translation, which has also been recorded by more than one performer. But this Portuguese version with Tom and Elis is the definitive, classic recording.

Just a few informations: The lyric in English you were reading is the English version of the song... not the literal translation from Portuguese... but they have the same mood. "São as águas de março fechando o verão" = "They are the waters of March closing the summer". During March, here in Rio, Brazil, it's usually rain a lot. Tom Jobim, the composer, was from Rio. And, of course, the summer ends in March in the Southern hemisphere.
