1. For more information on modules and modularity concepts - please watch this great video: • Modularity: ED Part 01
I used it as my inspiration, and decided to go one step further and use actual in-game ship models, to get as accurate as possible.
2. Here is a link to my module size spreadsheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
This is my internal document, I didn't intend to make it public, so I provide it 'as is'.
3. When placing and sizing the modules I used the following rules:
- There are 5 different module size categories:
- hardpoints
- O optional
- S core small (life support, power distributor, sensors, optional restricted)
- L core large (power plant, thrusters, FSD)
- H hatches (bays)
- For thrusters it looks like FDEV takes 2 one-size-smaller thrusters together to make one larger thruster module
- Optional modules need to have 100% of their volume unobstructed by other modules or structure, because they house universal components.
- Core modules do not need to have 100% of their volume unobstructed because they usually don't occupy all the available space and their mounting can be 'tailor made' to fit.
But whenever possible I try to go for highest available volume.
- Fuel tanks need to be able to contain liquid hydrogen at 70.8kg/cubic meter. This allows to calculate fuel tank volume based on specified capacity.
- Optional components need to have direct access to the cargo bay, so that cargo and SRVs can be transferred in and out of the ship.
- Whenever possible I try to take into account external hull design - doors, hatches, vents, windows, etc.
- Once all the modules are in place - the remaining space is allocated for thermal core, crew compartments and ship's structural frame.
4. Crew quarters layout
- lvl1 - big rooms on both sides of M Hardpoints - common area, galley
- lvl1 - small rooms at the aft - technical rooms and access to modules
- lvl2 - rooms on both sides of the cockpit - pilot and co-pilot private quarters
5. Structural frame takes a lot of effort to model, so I had to skip it again for this ship... Although I think it gives this additional final touch, and without it, it just doesn't look that good. Therefore I have some ideas to try out to see if I can model the frame faster, so I can reliably make it for every ship (hopefully).

Love the logic used to place the essential components and then work around them to figure out living space. Very interesting. It's always fun to see what people think the interiors would look like. Nice work.

One of my gripes with the way many people design sci fi spacecraft is that they tend to be basically hollow shells of living space with all the things actually needed to make them work tiny and squeezed into the walls. This concept makes it feel much more believable and like theres some proper advanced heavy duty technology under the hood.

The circa-1984 Elite game came with a nice _Space Trader's Flight Training Manual_ booklet which had chapters describing the Cobra Mk III interior, layout, and components. A slightly different version of this manual existed for each of the many home computer systems of the era (mostly because illustrations had to be changed to match screenshots). It's an interesting reference if you like the lore (or the nostalgia). A partially curated generic version is still available - www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/manual.htm

Love these videos. I know it will probably be a long time before we see one on the cutter but I was looking at the mass of a cutter's internals and optionals in a rough fasion, just holding some blocks up to a few blocks, and noticed there was A LOT of extra room on board a cutter! I am waiting patiently till the day you work through all the ships and then reach the cutter so I can see your idea on cutter internals! OwO

It seems like the Cobra got 2 extra S1 slots. You could put them in the "crew space" in the wingtips, or into the crewspace-cargobay transit area. P. S. Cobra Mk. IV fitting idea: 2 S4s in place of the fuel tanks and Crew Space in the leading edge (there is a bit of space, and those parts are a bit bigger on the Mk4), bottom 3 S2s > 2 S3 (they should fit no problem), small hardpoints + new 2 S2s > top S4 (there is also some extra Crew Space, and Cargo Hall for the new S4s), new fuel tanks wherever they fit.

@@JahonCross Actually now that I think about it the vast majority of ships have proper stairs on the nose landing gear. And on certain ships you can see the actual door although it's poorly modelled. Lots of ships in Elite use forward landing gear as an entrance ramp. It simply serves both purposes at the same time. Think about it like this: though we never see the pilot's families, one has to assume that most of these ships are also the permanent homes of their owners and their family. These ships, in that sense, should feel a lot like the Galaxy Class Enterprise D from ST:TNG, a craft that is designed around many things. Exploration, transport of materials and people, combat when needed... But also, a long-term home for not only its crew, but their families. The smaller ships should feel far more personal, more like a semi truck, a vehicle that can be lived in, but isn't really *home*. The bigger ships should feel like they are designed around long-term, larger scale habitation.
@EmeraldView
@EmeraldView 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ravenfellblade , wanting to get a sense of size of my Elite Ships. I already compared my 1800 sq ft home (built in the 70s so it's largely a box, lol) to the Sidewinder in a 3d modeling program. And without the roof (just the living space) , two stories 39' x 24' x 16' (Length, Width, Height) , it fits within the Sidewinder from the back of the Sidewinder, centered in their middles. It still leaves plenty of room on either side of the Sidewinder and doesn't even make it half way to the front of it. Only a small portion of the top of that rectangular box peeks out from the top of the Sidewinder. Nevertheless along the back edge it's as tall as a two story home (sans the roof/attic) Now obviously in a Sidewinder, you're not going to have as much living space as an 1800 sq ft home, since much of that space will be taken up by ship systems and equipment and cargo bays. But it just goes to show that even the Sidewinder is quite large compared to a typical home.
