Basic understanding of TCP /IP
TCP/IP and Subnet Masking
Purpose of Class
This class teaches students what DCHP is and the core concepts of Dynamic Host Control Protocol.
Class Notes
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
DHCP is a Server Service
Separate from DNS
Can be found in Windows Servers/ Linux/ Unix and Home or Small office Routers
DHCP Servers Assign:
Dynamic IP Addresses
Static Subnet Mask
Static Default gateway
Static Primary and Secondary DNS Servers
Scope is the pool of addresses that the DHCP server can assign from. Such as192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200
Lease is the length of time that the DHCP server will reserve the IP address for the client.
Clients will try to renew the lease periodically
Lease length can be manually configured on a per server basis
Reservations are IP Addresses that are reserved for systems that need Static IP Addresses
Steps for Getting an IP
DHCPDiscover -- Client Requests an IP from Any Available DHCP Server
DHCPOffer -- DHCP Servers offer IP Addresses
DHCPRequest -- Client Acknowledges which IP Address it has accepted
DHCPAck -- DHCP Server Acknowledges Client has accepted IP Address

Hello Eli, I have been working with computers, shall we say, when they were made with Vacuum Tubes. Well, almost.. You seem to have this network calculus down. I am the Break / Fix person you mentioned as yourself in another video. I mostly did POS systems and refresh projects for Retail customers. I really never had to worry about TCP/IP because that was always handled by Level 2-3 support. I have been out of work since January and recently went on an interview where I just looked plain stupid. I really should have studied this content rather than wasting my time on Electronics.. I do have a BS in electronics but how often will I need Quadratics or Calculus to fix a computer, like NEVER.. I just wanted to thank you as in just a few days I have a better understanding of Networks and the basics network infrastructure. I am also absorb a little SQL and Data Base fundamentals. Thanks again Eli. Durf. .

Thanks for the Video Sir. I am new to Networking but I have heard that Default gateway is the actually a Router and It assighns the IP address to all the devices connected to the Network(Home Network) Then what is the kind of IP address that DHCP provides and as Default gateway is your Router then how DHCP assighn the Default Gateway. I am sorry If I sound dumb but please explain. It will be a big help. Thanks

Hi Eli, got few questions on DHCP. In all my questions I am trying to relate to On Field implementation, so questions also might be wrong 1. How the DHCP Packet travel to the ISP ? how means first it need to bypass the local gateway, and local gateway will be acting as a Relay ( if my understanding is correct ), aftwards how ( DSLAM or many routers not sure) the packet will reach to the ISP Router. Basically the question here is what is common/best topology is used ( keeping in mind factor like firewall/hacking) can you give a example of any ISP vender of your country and as a user how you really connect. As in between user and ISP you can get different devices of differnt vendors... 2. I saw a video of a firewall (linksys), where the firewall was also capable of providing an IP as DHCP was running. How the IP provided by that firewall and ISP differs ? is the IP given by firewall is routable ? if routable is it because of the conecpt of NAT ? if because of NAT will there be any impact on network ? 3. Any device which is capable of responding of your request is called a server. Question here is, if a ISP is running a DHCP, does is have to be a edge router ? Can you please post a video of edge and core router. It would be really great. Thank for posting those beautiful videos :)
