In this disturbing true crime video Kevin Hicks delves into the tale of the murder of 14-year-old Mary Clifford by midwife Elizabeth Brownrigg. Brownrigg was a notorious figure in 18th century London, infamous for her heinous acts of cruelty towards her servants. In a haunting recount of a dark chapter in 18th century London the story unravels the gruesome details of Brownrigg's heinous acts of violence and reveals the depths of human depravity that lurk within seemingly ordinary facades.

I mean what exactly do we think is happening RIGHT NOW?!? We live in a world controlled by men, which has effectively groomed entire generations of young girls into being sex workers today. Grown men in their forties and fifties (all the way up to a hundred) who are happy to consume their "content", while pretending to be faithful and devoted, fathers and husbands!😂 This is WHAT men are. Disgusting and predatory. If history tells us anything at all... it's that men in general should not have power of women of any age, as they will always abuse that power.

I was getting molested by my mom growing up. Im a woman. My dad didnt take it seriously and neither did law enforcement. A lot of men unfortunately dont take woman on girl abuse as seriously as they do when its a male perpetrator due to the strength difference between women and men. I had assumed with people being more strict in the days of antiquity, that this problem was only a new one. I guess not

Mary Mitchell and Mary Jones might have wanted this horror to be forgotten. Still seems weird that there was no record of them afterwards. Could they have changed names at that time due to the crimes against them?
@CandiceGoddard
@CandiceGoddard 2 ай бұрын
@@deed5811 It's not weird. They were members of the lowest social class and probably illiterate as mentioned in the video so unable to record their own histories. There's absolutely no mention of MOST people from the same socio-economic class and even though the girls escaped, it doesn't mean that anyone would have particularly helped them and made a record of their lives because quite frankly what would have been more interesting in the case would be the gory details and the motives of the killers. When I was at uni studying archaeology the first thing we were taught was to not interpret the past according to our own standards or morals, but try to get into the mindset of the people at that time. With all due respect, people like you seem to have a very delusional interpretation of history. These people were socio-economically beneath most domestic servants in a medium to large sized household and atrocities like this were not rare. In the same time period, which was the early industrial period btw, lots of poor families sold their children into apprenticeships knowing that many would not survive their teens. There are stories about how teenagers died being ground up in early machinery or having their limbs torn off. Old people who could no longer work would commit suicide so as not to be a burden and mothers who were out breast feeding rich women's children would enrol their own babies in death lotteries, hoping the children would die as the pay out was sometimes more than their yearly salary.

There were multiple attempts over the centuries to improve English society by reorganising it, from the Peasants' Revolt, through to the Levellers, and on to the unionist movement inspired by the Tolpuddle Martyrs. I think the lack of action is due to many things. There was so much abuse of the young people in the situation as we have heard of. People who were aware of "groans and screaming" could not do anything of their own accord. The workhouse and constable had to be fetched and even then victims were hidden and perpetrators escaped. Like the countries populated by hundreds of millions of people no one sees the ones that go missing.

Hi Kev! Yet another riveting story mate. It always amazes me how people, can treat other people, in such a horrific way. Those girls really suffered! As per usual, this presentation was obviously meticulously researched. I waited to watch this until I got home, so I could watch it on my big TV rather than my phone. Keep the great stories coming please! My best wishes as always to you and Julie. Dave.

You know, I'm an agnostic - but if it means that nameless monster has been screaming in agony in the depths of hell for the last 257 years, I will gladly believe. And if it means that Mary Clifford, Mary Jones, and Mary Mitchell, a young woman with more courage in her bones than a million men, are now somewhere in a peaceful, contented place, perhaps reading, chatting idly together and basking in the spring sunshine - then I will believe in a heartbeat.

So, you will believe in God, if it means there is a hell for bad people to suffer in? That makes no sense. Whether or not you like something doesn’t make it more or less real. You believe in something because you believe, not because it suits you. Also, I would hope the idea that your loved ones could be in Paradise would be more motivational than people you’ve never met suffering. You scare me, sir

This is one of the problems I have with Christianity. The idea that someone can commit crimes for a maximum of about 70 years, and (compared to what Hell is supposed to be like) have a limited human level of cruelty, yet the perpetrators are then condemned to unimaginable horror for *eternity*! And then many folk will think this is just?! Wow... Just wow... Tbh with a heart like that, I would wonder if you would be likely to join them....

Ironically, slavery was finally outlawed within the UK itself in the beginning of the 1800’s. It was seen as barbaric to treat humans as property. Yet for children & youths, human rights seemed non-existent still

I don’t care the child marriage traditions and girls becoming moms at young ages. They’re children. Thank you so goddamn much for your continued dedicating to remembering and honoring the very humanity of these girls. Just girls. Not even young women yet. Girls.

You really are a world class narrator your narrative could only made me visualise the brutality and sufferings of the poor girl. Being a lover of English language I have recommended your video to my students so that they can also learn that "every word makes a picture in the listener's mind".
