ELK HUNTING: GIANT COLORADO ELK charges into 40 yards after coming unglued!

After locating a group of elk on the opening day of the 2019 Colorado Muzzleloader season we can tell one of the bulls is a giant by his voice. We get sidehill with consistent wind and its time to start elk calling. If you are wondering how to call elk this is a perfect example with some great elk / wapiti sounds. I start with soft cow calls while using the Montana cow butt decoy in an attempt to lure them out of the timber.
I get them fired up using the matriarch cow call and the herd bull is consistently responding with a bugle until I cut him off with a challenge bugle. The bull elk comes unglued and charges into 40 yards screaming the whole way!
The bull comes charging into 40 yards before the shooter finally takes him out. One thing is for sure this was one of my top call-ins from 2019 and my heart was pounding!

That looked like a lot of fun! We are headed back to Colorado this October, hoping to redeem ourselves after I missed 3 times last year, on camera, lol. I am now a new subscriber, hoping you keep showing us how to get it done!

Good hunt but them elk on private land are dumb!.... lol if you called that much here in Idaho the wolves would eat you and the elk would have run 30 min ago..... BTW good shot..

Magwa Magwa private is definitely a different story that’s why I mention it in the beginning of the video :) that being said the elk in CO love being talked to especially in dense timber areas. They are probably more vocal because we don’t have wolves or griz :)

@@magwamagwa45110 Rather have Wolves or a shit ton of coyotes ???? In Douglas Co WI, our coyote population was thru the roof a decade ago & our deer population went from too many deer - to the dumps.!!!. The does were only having 1 fawn & those rarely survived.... The only thing that can even come remotely close to controlling the overbreeding coyote - is the wolves / the human has failed at that task..... Its a tough ball game to play....

@@ferrari_guy3570 we didn’t hunt front the truck actually we left the road on a UTV and hiked the last mile or so. I don’t know if you watched the video but the hunt is all in the call in…it was epic even for private land 👊

I didn't see any orange in that clip. Even on private land the guy doing the shooting has to wear 500 square inches of orange or pink in the state of CO. Maybe he was wearing it but I sure didn't see any.

@@HoltzOutdoors Yes I know but you said the hunter was less than 40 yards form the bull. If he/she was in orange then I probably should have been able to see them since the bull was clearly visible. I am a 5th generation CO native and it is one of the worst kept secrets that many guides on private property do not enforce the law for orange. Not saying that is what happened but I sure didn't see any orange. Just sayin....

@@retirednavy8720 shooter was wearing orange he was just sitting on the ground in the sage bushes when I said he was 40 yards from the bull he was but by the time he shot he was around 60-80 yards from it. He tells me the whole reason he didn’t shoot when the bull was closest is he didn’t have a lane through the brush lol 😂 also I am not a guide

Why on earth would you want to ask such a stupid question ? He bought a tag , prepared all year for this hunt , and doing all that according to your brainless logic , he should then stay home and wonder what the elk are doing ?? Its real simple karen , if you don't like to hunt , then don't . Stay home in the kitchen and bake cookies , thats women's work anyway .
