Take away for me, to never use a mechanical Broadhead ever again was confirmed. Complete shocker for me was how poorly the single bevels performed. QAD still a top performer.
@rschwarck44
@rschwarck44 22 күн бұрын
The single bevels in a target/ cardboard expends energy faster as it is trying to continue to rotate, but given the medium it is going through is preventing that cause energy loss and therefore reduced penetration. These tests are nothing more than entertainment they do very, very little to provide any sort of definitive results that you could rely on for shooting actual animals.

Single bevels don’t even perform when they do hit what they are supposed to, they create no wound channel

@@16tkoger I've shot dozens of whitetail with a #45 longbow shooting a very slow 160fps and I've blown through many mature buck shoulder bone with single bevel zwickey broadheads. No other head gives my longbow that type of penitration and blows straight through like a scary sharp single bevel. I've hunted for years strictly using tradition equipment and I'm speaking from 100% experience on live animals.

Yeah. The only thing I can add about this video is that a shoulder blade taken from an animal will never be the same as one in a live animal. There's no way to test better than this. It's just a fact.

Great video and confirms why one should stay the hell away from the shoulders. Not one of those heads would penetrate at elk hunting distance, as this test is 10 yards... No reason to shoot tight to shoulders, plenty of room rearward to double lung. On Elk or whitetail...

Always good to see broadhead testing. Very hard to get close to the real thing but you all did a great job! I was very surprised with the results. This last elk season I shot my elk through the thinner part of the shoulder. Arrow got broke into three pieces as it ran off and then fell over in about 50 yards and never moved! Setup was AXIS 5mm 29 inch single right hand bevel Cuttthroat 125 grain broadhead. Mathews phase 4 75 pounds with 28.5 draw length. Arrow weight is around 470. Shot was at 19.3 yards and the broken piece went all the way through the elk.

Shot a 90lb whitetail doe this year with 100gr exodus, deer was quartering to real hard, entered halfway up the neck and exited at the hind quarter. Complete pass through almost 4ft of deer, and she folded up where she stood. Of the 5 deer I’ve killed with the exodus over the last two years 4 have went down in sight. I’m completely sold, and for a fixed. Blade they tune and fly like an absolute dream. I’ll never shoot anything else

I have shot a lot of heads over the years, and even had a website dedicated to testing broadheads years ago. I now shoot two blade heads that I can sharpen myself. I have not seen much difference on animals when it comes to single vs double bevel when it comes to performance. If I were to shoot a replaceable blade head it would be the Exodus. I have gotten away from mechanicals all together. I tend to shoot very close to the shoulder and none of them work well going into heavy bone. Enjoyed the video

Great video/test guys! I have never been a fan of mechanicals,, too many variables of what can fail/go wrong! As a sportsman, the "instant kill" is always the objective, and that means using the best "tool" for the job. That being said,, then there's the debate over 2, 3, or 4 blade - fixed, or replaceable, blades?? Also the question of what grain, and width? What lbs. test bow do you prefer,, and what size/kind of arrows?

These type broadhead tests favor short ferrule broadheads as they don’t have as much blade length drag going into the cardboard. Single bevel with a 500-600 grain heavy arrow is the ticket.

@MrDarwhite
@MrDarwhite 21 күн бұрын
@@bornandraisedoutdoors Have you considered the way a single bevel cuts? It separates flesh, but in cardboard, it stops that arrow very quickly because it's more than simple straight friction. It's trying to pry that cardboard apart as it cuts. They penetrate in real elk, especially in a heavier arrow. I shoot a 200 grain Grizzly Stik Maasai. My 2023 elk was quartering hard to me and I hit him very close to the shoulder. It passed through his lung, liver and hay packed stomach. It then went out his far hindquarter and stuck into a stump behind him. No surprise there. He had no clue what happened. He started walking again and died 35 yards later. The broad head still shaves. There are a LOT of great broadheads and I was also impressed with the exodus, but don't take away my Maasai's please :-)

Still have to get through the hide and muscle before you encounter bone and the mechanicals are going to suffer even more. Finally, when you hit heavy bone, the Ashby stuff comes into play, so arrow mass and f.o.c. are factors along with a stouter broadhead, say 200 grains.

Sevrs are good heads if you have a decent setup. I used them in the fall for Whitetail and had 30" of penetration on a full frontal shot on a doe that whirled, and severed both elbows of the buck I shot. They're decent heads and I'm sure the 1.5s would get a pass-through on an elk. Just depends on your setup. For mine, the blades took no damage as well.

One thing that is not taken into consideration here is what is on the other side of every single animal shoulder blade that has ever been shot!? Ribs! Now I know there are gaps in between those and it's not going to happen every time but imagine hitting both. =Not good for any head, but looks like The Exodus might be the best. Thank you guys for your time with doing this test !

I think this is a good test. I liked that the rig was not super solidly mounted and moved a little under arrow impact animals move under impact. I have a tough question for your next test maybe. What is the total length or volume of cut you can get into a soft target? I have long feared the shoulder of elk and intentionally planned to shoot for mid lung to stay away from it. Will that Iron will with bleeders spin around 6 times as it passes through a critter adding additional cutting that negates the advantage of having a more conventional 3 or 4 blade design. My thoughts here is say your shot is slightly back and it's a one lung/liver hit what wound is going to be larger, stay open better, and hopefully put it down faster. A shot through a few layers of cardboard and into a beef liver might be a good way to check this out. I think lots of people have a pretty good idea of what broadheads penetrate enough to do the job well but a side by side look at a wound track after it has had to overcome something to dull the blades a bit. I know people who have killed plenty of elk with muzzys slick tricks, and thunderheads, i have my doubts on their ability to pop through a shoulder but i think they would probably do a great job of creating a large plenty deep wound for the back half of the lungs. I love seeing options that there are options that may poke through the scapula and deliver a lethal injury when something has gone a little wrong. What happens if that the elk whirls the other way at the shot and it's slightly back instead of forward.
