The Elkhorn Tunnel in Southern West Virginia, Is a Tunnel I have been trying to get to for a long time now. and finally got the opportunity... I have been waiting for either the fall, winter or early spring to check it out. I wanted no leaves on the trees so we could get the most view of it as possible. In this video we are just going to tour the blower unit and show you one catch thru it. I was able to catch a few trains there but will post them as separate videos in the future, I sure hope you enjoy the video as much as I did visiting it...

Thank you Cris, I am with you on this. So glad they are still there to see, hard finding steam era things. People love to just throw things out cause it has no use any more. I think this would be a good piece as a museum entrance. So I hope if they ever get ruled of it, they just don't throw it away as scrap.. really appreciate you watching, and leaving this great comment

@@TriGogglin Me too I wonder if there is any archive of it or one of the others, also how was it operated, I guess automatically when the train occupied a section of track rather than a guy stationed there all the time.
@TriGogglin
@TriGogglin 2 ай бұрын
At one point it was coal fired steam power, then went to electric, so probably the steam days someone would have to operate it, but the electric, may have been automatic
@cedarcam
@cedarcam 2 ай бұрын
@@TriGogglin In the days it was steam powered yes some guy would have to be there all the time. I just searched for more info and see it was only in use from 1950 until 1959 when steam locomotives stopped running on this line. There were no video results just some photos mostly after it was out of use.

But whats funny is we always leave our state to see something cool or go on vacations. When we never see what's in our own back yards. But West Virginia has the most beautiful places to travel thru, it's truly a scenic state. So glad you enjoy the places I take you stay tuned I have some more coming up. I rode through this tunnel when I was a kid several times on the N&W passenger trains. Great days! The top of the Elkhorn grade is in the tunnel. The locomotives in your video were pushers that cut off a couple miles east of the tunnel at Yards, VA. You are very close to the West Virginia/Virginia State Line. Those pushers will go back down grade about 30 miles to Farm, WV where they will wait on the next Coal Unit Train or Intermodal Freight Train to help them up the grade. The new grade at the tunnel I believe is 1.6%. The grade to the old tunnel was 2.5%!
@TriGogglin

Thats awesome you rode through it.. I did get the the yard just south of the tunnel.. I figured the lite runners were pushers to a degree.. cause I caught them on a different train not long after.. thanks for all this info did not know alot about the area.
