This is now checked off my bucket list, been wanting to go here for some time now, and so glad I did, only wish I would have gone sooner it is a fantastic place. The Natural Tunnel is more than 850 feet long and 10 stories high, Natural Tunnel was naturally carved through a limestone ridge over thousands of years. Other scenic features include a wide chasm between steep stone walls surrounded by several pinnacles, or "chimneys."
The South Atlantic and Ohio railroad constructed tracks through the Natural Tunnel in 1893, and the first train passed through the following year. In 1899, the Natural tunnel was purchased by the Tennessee & Carolina Iron and Steel Company. The railway originally carried passenger trains; today, the line is still open but now operated by Norfolk Southern, also used under trackage rights by CSX and is only used to transport coal.

So glad that I could share it with you so you don't have to battle that hill or the chair lift, that would also be a steep drop on those. Did you see my mate Grumpy Roo Bear? Oh that's right his on the other side...lol Such a huge shame I'm not going to be able to see it this year, thanks to your government departments not wanting to do anything. Yes the camera doesn't do the gorge any justice, but it's amazing how nature had carved it's path through the mountain, it's almost like a spot west of Sydney, call Jenolan Caves, it's not as high as this one. A pretty area here too, there is a coal mine about 40 miles North West from here, which is in a gorge too, and the coal is transported down the mountain to a rail siding, I can't remember the name of it. I was there in 2009. I will have to dig out the photo's from the other side of the tunnel, where I was, I'll post it on one of my Funday Friday video. Nice to see the Drive in is still going too.
