Dan's effort to find a great arrow is fun and instructive. The Hooter Shooter is an interesting contraption, but I am not a big fan of how it leaves the bow flailing around after the string is released. The "Rocket Man" gentleman who is commonly featured on Ranch Fairy and Hunting Public videos is an intelligent human. In one of their tests, they discovered diminishing returns when increasing the helical percentage. Fascinating. Archery is the best pastime - by far.

Two ElkShape ABT videos in a row for me. The switch out to an Ultra View and longer sight tape and then this one. I want to build my own arrows this year to go with newish Prime Black 3, that I got last August for $650. This will be the first season using it. It’s set at 65 lbs and a 29.5 inch draw. My current arrows are Carbon Xpress Mayhem SDS from the factory. The arrows are 511 grain with a 45 grain outsert and 100 grain head. They’re 11.25 gpi. I am actually looking at those Victory RIP TKO Gamer or Elites in 300 spine which is 8.8 gpi. My cousin uses the GT Black Label Quantum which are similar gpi and I want something similar yet different to compare notes. So the Victory RIPs look like a great option. I want to get my arrows in the 475-525 grain range with a lighted nock. Probably close to the 495 grain total weight. So with a 29 inch arrow I need to put 200 grains up front. I should be close to that 15% FOC mark. I did look at those exact Easton arrows and since most 4mm components suck, I decided to stick with 5mm. Side note 📝 my 36 year old brother still has Magic cards and plays Dungeons and Dragons, when he can since he has a 5 year old daughter. Which comes first always.

I epoxy them in and spin them before they set. I love them all so far. Because I used epoxy, I cannot change out tips or broadheads. Oh well, I'll just buy more arrows! LOL

For recording flighttime on a budget i would rig up a light next to the target that goes on when you press the trigger of a hooter shooter and film that + the point of impact. By counting the amount of frames between the light going on an the arrow hitting you could get some pretty accurate readings, especially with a camera doing thousends of frames

I’d think the easiest and cheapest way would be to have a very fast microphone at both the bow and target. If you try and do it just from the bow or target you will have some error due to the speed of sound at varying air densities and pressures. The next best way would to use a light system similar to a chrono or trap at a drag strip but I’m sure the cost would be much much more

For flight time measurement. Shoot slomo video, some phone cameras do 1920fps and 960fps is pretty common. Use static lighted nock, count the frames from launch to impact and you have the flight time.

I've found I really prefer a regular insert. I shoot my standard size Vforce, VF TKO, and Easton 6.5 arrows at 100 plus for practice and 3d shoots and really can't find a need for a skinnier arrow with finicky components. I tried 204 arrows and didn't like halfouts or insert/sleeve setups, and I tried VAP SS, which were nice, but had front end components bending after a bit of practice with them. For hunting distances I don't see the "wind cutting" smaller diameter mattering much, since both size shafts would still have a big broadhead and big fletchings, and a broadhead makes a bigger hole than the arrow shaft, so no real world advantage there either.

It’s funny that you told the guy who has never shot he would like the v3x because that’s what he chose and that was me a few weeks ago. Had never shot before either. Shot 6 different bows and the v3x 33 was hands down the best shooting for me. So I bought it and I love it.

Brandon McDonald did a very good comparison video comparing time to impact between different arrow weights. The time to impact proved insignificant between weights. However, trajectory to target was the major issue. Listen to the podcast Brandon McDonald did with Pedro from Stag Culture regarding arrows. A different perspective from the "fairy". Trajectory and good arrow flight seems more important than momentum in the real world hunting scenarios. Penetration is usually not a problem even with lighter arrows with proper tune. Also, arrow noise seems to be a critical factor as only the animal that is arrow is intended for tends to react in a herd situation...this is certainly a rabbit hole... Thanks for this video. I am seriously considering the Easton 4mm axis...however with ethics outserts and stainless collars for my moose arrows.

You were on thr right track for measuring Flight Time with video. That's the easiest way to do it IMO. Look at the audio waveform between shot and impact and count the number of frames, then convert to seconds. The higher your video frame rate, the better the test resolution.

When I first started hunting back in late 90s I used some Bemam micro diameter arrows. I remember they shot flat and they were very accurate, and I got several pass throughs on deer and elk. The only problem was that the arrow used an outsert system that was garbage. They would bend when shooting the compressed carpet targets at my local range. They would regularly come off in the target when removing arrow. They where hard as hell to broadhead tune. I used them for about 3 years. Still not over it. I would be willing to switch back some day when MFJJ says there are like so many great options for insert/outserts and broadheads work great too.

Time of flight device(s). Buy/ Build a pressure sensor, if you can figure out how to hook it up even a retail scale could work, and attach it to a block target. The pressure sensor works as a switch in an IoT device (i.e. argon kit, they give personal uses 100 devices worth of free cellular last I heard). The code is looking for the scale to give a reading and it stops the timer, given this it could probably also be set up for impulse time if you really cared about it? On the bow side of things, find a place to put some switch that lets it know that it's been shot, the mechanical shooter would be handy in this situation and hook it up to another IoT device and once the switch is hit, it starts a timer. Wouldn't look pretty, but could probably be accomplished for $200.

I would love to see a video on like a 550 grain arrow that has a very low foc like 11 or whatever, and a 550 grain arrow with a super high foc like 19/20 and see the speed degration if there is any, penetration difference, groupings. I shoot the 250 orions with the SS, insert and outsert by ethics, with a iron will broadhead and Tac vanes, 3 fletch. Total arrow weight is around 636, 637. 380 grains upfront, With 25.2 percent foc, which is what I’m getting from gold tip. Super high weight and foc, and I tinkered with a bunch of stuff and built the lightest arrow shaft and put as much weight in the front as I could, while still being able to shoot 100 yards, for a follow up shot or something on elk which is what this arrow is for and my groups at 100 shrunk a couple inches. The arrow is flying slow but I can still reach 100 yards and a little farther with 71 pounds 28 inch draw. Abt!!

Something to think about. I don't know which vane you were shooting, but in one of the clips the back of the arrow was spinning in a circle. Ranch Fairy's latest video he talks about how more helical on the back can contribute to that when the front of the arrow isn't super heavy. Rocket man stuff.

Just measure FPS of two arrows, have a set distance and solve for time. You don’t need anything expensive besides a chronograph. As long as you have speed and distance, you can figure the time it took to go any distance.
@josephr1198
@josephr1198 2 жыл бұрын
Works in theory, in practice you gotta account for drag/air resistance. Faster arrow will have more drag. Easiest way to do it would probably be via camera then overlaying the footage, going by sound would be less accurate since sounds got to travel back.

You can use x-impacts with nexxus 75gr titanium outsert/collars with a little tinkering. I use 250 spine x- impacts, sand off a tiny amount off the top so that the 350 size nexxus titanium collar will slide on. It's a tiny bit smaller than the x impacts so that's why you need to sand a small amount. Use boning cool melt Glue. Sand the inside of the Shaft and clean it. Using the cool melt Glue will allow you to tune the Inserts after installation so they spin true. If you don't like them you can boil water, stick them in it for 3-5 seconds and use pliers to pull it off. Super easy just time consuming.

Their 4 fletch configuration was not very good IMO. 4 AAE Max Stealths? Those vanes are tall, long and heavy for a 4 fletch configuration. No wonder they did not group very well. Arrow flight would have been much improved using something lower profile in the 2-2.25" range. 2.25" Xvanes in a 4 fletch would be lighter than 3 AAE MAX Stealths. About the same weight if you include a 2.75-3" long wrap. Seems they ran this test in a way that would back their position that 4 fletch is the wrong way to go. It probably is if you are using Max Stealths. BTW, did you see the new video with the Turner's? Bodie is running a 4mm shaft with AAE 23 Hybrids. Those hybrid vanes are very close in spec to the the 2.25 xvanes. Don't give up on 4 fletch just because these guys do not like to run them.

I went with nexxus arrows last year and aluminum insert/outsert. Wish I would have went with the titanium option. Took a nice whitetail and the tip is all bent to shit, so it’s going on the euro mount.

My thoughts are if you aren’t getting pass through with 5mm you need to take a step back and we work your whole set up. A good penetrating arrow starts off with a really sharp fixed blade broadhead. In my opinion 16-20%foc is optimal. 550 grains with a fixed broadhead and around 16% foc is a killer

@montuckyman4982
@montuckyman4982 Жыл бұрын
Nope. Just put em where you want them. Unless you want them on the front of the arrow . In that case, step away from the fletching jig now!🤣. But just keep them from touching your face if it bugs you or make so you can touch one to your nose. Whatever you like best. Not a single archer in the world can shoot the difference in steering between 1" and 4".

Just need to use position, time, and velocity equation. X=Xo+1/2(Vo+V)t, just solve for t. Vo=start velocity, V=final velocity, Xo= start position should be 0, X final distance. t will be flight time

Speed= distance/ time sooo if you know how fast your arrow travels and are at a set distance. You can calculate the time your arrow take to hit the target. Aka Time= distance/ speed.

To test flight time, the high speed camera would be best. Watching many years of mythbusters it seemed that’s what they used most when testing flight time and velocities.

I know the FOC benefits. But please ABT with some Victory Xtorsions with HIT inserts. By far the toughest and best arrow I’ve used. I’d put pigs equal or above elk in toughness because of the compact frame and I have an arrow right now I’ve looked for on 3 occasions. I’m going back with a metal detector to try and find it.

I love the the Victory Vap TKO 4mm I just wish they would come with a stronger outsert system. I’ve had good luck on game and shot my first elk with one but you will soon get a wobble with those longer aluminum ones they use. and yes I have used the Easton Titanium 55 grain but on a big hog I shot it blew through but on the recovery of the arrow it split the sidewall on the arrow. The Titanium sits flush to the arrow and on hard hits will split the sidewall. Just my experience.

I always chamfer the inside shoulder of the arrow to prevent insert shoulder induced splitting. I will buy inserts for the next spine heavier than my shafts so that the insert outer diameter is slightly bigger than the shaft, so that I can tightly wrap a single layer of high strength spectra fishing line from behind the slight insert overhang to back about a 3rd of an inch. Then coat the line wrap with epoxy. May be overkill, but no splits since. I still have the old Kinetic that I first tried it on, and it just won't die.

@@techstuf4637 The issue I was having with the Titanium by Easton that it sit flush so once you put a broadhead either fixed or mechanical it made such a longer system on the end that worked as a leverage that on certain hits it would split them. Not always but ruined a few.

For Josh, and Easton if they'd listen. ANY inital bend or eccentricity, .001 .0001, in shaft OR nock OR insert, will have much greater effect on the dynamic spine at launch than spine consistency around the shaft. If there's clear stiff seam it can dominate, but if there's any bend in the system the end result of nock tuning will be a combination. So even if Eastons react to nock tuning it doesn't mean their claims of spine consistency isn't true.

Valkyrie broadheads man. I use the Ximpact with the Valkyrie system Ti broadhead. Money! Does use a aluminum collar, however, I've never had any issues with them bending due to how far the pin goes into the shaft. Snyder Core copied this design from Brent.

So what is y’all opinion on the new swacker technology??? Not the actual mechanical broadhead itself, but the idea of the arrow having the male threads and the female threads being in the broadhead itself… that would give you an option to do what I’d call a fixed insert-outsert system where there could be a collar for the outside that is permanently attached to a male threaded post that goes into the shaft… would be durable as crap!!!

You need a broadhead on the front of that hunting arrow. I honestly don't know how much a 4mm arrow will help with a 3 & 4 blade broadhead either. Maybe with a 2 blade it might help ?. I can't imagine there is a big enough difference between 4 5 or mm arrows with a broadhead on. White tail it definitely doesn't matter. I'm not a elk hunter. But damn it I wish I was
