For the younger generation Requiem is, but she’ll always be known for The Exorcist, which destroyed me. I was 13, had just lost my best friend, and didn’t sleep for two weeks. I never want to see it again. The thing about this interview that surprises me is she admits to things I’ve read over the years. The set was supposedly plagued with injuries, bad luck, Linda Blair actually broke her back, yet Ellen went on to play her role in the series The Exorcist which aired on Fox. To any fans the series first season was very good, and IMO that same bad energy was there. I never watched it alone,. 🤣 There’s a total GEM she was in called ‘Resurrection’. I highly recommend it. She’s a healer in it. Oldie but goodie.

Didn't scare me at all! I thought it was silly; the kid was annoying and whiny, and there are no such things as demons, so it didn't frighten me. The wooden head turning looked so fake and ridiculous. The kid lip-syncing those voices was nuts. I watched it as a kid, a teen, and an adult, never once got scared. I guess it's all based on the things you are programmed to be afraid of. I was raised with no religion, so not scary to me at all. The green stuff she spat out didn't even look like pea soup. There have been so many effing possession movies, I can't count. None of them are scary because they are all stupid and they all suffer the same flaws. Why isn't your god ever more powerful than the demon who's possessing whomever in the story? And why do they bring in priests as heroes when they can never fix it? They are just MEN who have costumes on and could be pedophiles for all we know who just say their magic words and throw magic water on the kids. It's just dumb. I would never trust a priest alone with my child. NEVER. And I know demons aren't real. Stop believing movies have real shit in them!

In late 1973, maybe early 1974 I was working for the F.B.I. in Washington D.C.. Many scenes were filmed in Georgetown, I believe the movie opened up first there because of that reason. I was 18 years old.. On early Saturday morning I borrowed my roommates car and stood in line for a few hours to buy 4 tickets for one of the evening shows. We all watched the movie later that evening and it scared the living daylights out of us. You could smoke cigarettes in the theatre back in those days. After a gruesome scene, people were lighting up like crazy. A week or so after that I had my worst nightmare of my life. We also recognized a lot of the places filmed in the movie because we were living there.

Still to this very day I cannot watch that movie without being chilled to the bone. I saw it when it first came to the cinema (I was actually too young to see it) I talked my aunt into taking me. Whilst we were waiting for the movie to start an usher was going around handing out leaflets about real exorcisms. I remember reading it and thinking oh my😮 then of course the movie started and being the kind of kid I was (I loved horror movies I was a vampire freak) I was very intrigued and excited as the movie began, but then as it continued I remembered what I read in the leaflet and the horror for me set in. Needless to say I was absolutely petrified to go home and sleep in the old Victorian house that I grew up in, in my dark room. I remember my mother was away for the weekend which was why my Aunt was over, I didn’t want to tell her (my Aunt) how scared I was, because she would’ve been very cross with me as she didn’t really want to take me to see that movie. When my mother got back from her weekend away I ended up sleeping with her for two weeks LOL. I’d never ever slept with my mother before even as a little child so this was quite out of the ordinary for me to do. I’ve read and heard a lot about things that went on during the making of this movie and I now realise that the reason why it’s scared me so much was because it was based on reality and the way it was made was just so incredibly forward for its time. It was a brilliantly casted movie there’s no doubt about that and it’s one that will go down in my horror movie history.

It wasn't based on reality because there are no demons and people do NOT get possessed. It's bullshit. No one has ever been possessed by a demon. No such thing. Crazy people have half-killed and KILLED children by believing in this horseshit which is very dangerous. They've performed exorcisms and driven their own kids insane and killed or almost killed them with this crap. No one should ever pull this clap-trap on a child. EVER! Some time later, in school, a class she was in got into a discussion about films they found most frightening. and why. Eventually the students asked those questions of their teacher. My daughter came home and told me that he had said, "The Exorcist. The parts with the doctors, and the machines, and there are no answers, it is everything a parent fears the most." My daughter said it was one of those moments when she realized how much fear parents live with all the time that their children are, correctly, ignorant of.

I have watched this film many times. It always scares me. If I watch it in the night I'll start seeing things, so if I want to watch again, I do it in the day. This film is not about scaring people, it is a fight of a mother to save her daughter. I think that is what most of the horror film makers miss. It is relationship. This film sets a strong relationship between characters. And it works. Ellen is wonderful, she plays humor so well. If I keep writing about it I may want to watch it again, let me conclude by saying that it is a film where each moment to moment work is strung together to make a beautiful piece of art. Thank you!

The Exorcist is a film that, IMO, has grown more and more in stature over the years and so has Ellens’s performance in what must have been a very difficult role. She essentially grounds the film in reality. Without her superb acting and the brilliant work by Jason Miller the film could never have reached the heights that it did - the cerebral heights that make you think and give you a knot in your stomach. As for the Oscar that year, well, they gave it to the wrong person - Jackson’s win was a joke. But neither Ellen, Woodward, Streisand, or Mason was spectacular. The deserving winner was probably Liv Ullmann for “Cries and Whispers” but, with the ceremony taking place just a few months after her disastrous “Lost Horizon”, she was not nominated.

I could sit and talk or listen to Mrs.Burstyn for hours. She is such and eloquent woman, who really knows and understands what it takes to create a character, become that character, and connect with the audience. Now I first saw the Exorcist when I was 7 years old. I lied to my parents about what movies were on what screen at the Drive-in Theater, just so I could see the Exorcist, and I learned very quickly that I made a HUGE MISTAKE! Hearing her explaining all of the sinister things that occurred during the filming and hearing her herself say that even they felt that they were playing with fire, shows me that she can accept that things you can't explain can occur. But again she speaks with such eloquence and heart you instantly just love to listen to her. I saw her in Requiem for a Dream with Jennifer Connelly. Ellen Burstyn was BRILLIANT in that as well. She is a phenomenal actress and an incredibly talented woman. Again I can't wait to see her face off against the evil in Exorcist Believer, and hopefully in Exorcist Deceiver. Maybe the 3rd will be called Exorcist Revealer, or Exorcist Revealed? Should be epic. I heard a rumor that she may not be back for the next movie, meaning her character may not survive? I HOPE that is WRONG! She NEEDS to be in the trilogy of these movies!

@@garyglaser4998 People always refer to that or just effects, yet there was definitely more. The Spiderwalk is after all in the book. It's not like they were just sticking that in there. I was really reflecting on other parts that really slow the movie down. I understand why Blatty wanted the initial medical examination in there because out of nowhere suddenly the mom drops out " It's just like the doctor said. It's nerves . . ." But it kind of just gives you the info in a way without slowing the movie down with that whole part of her behaving strangely at the hospital. Also, I don't think her (Linda's) acting in those scenes was all that great. To me, like with most stuff added back into movies, you usually see why it was taken out.

A fabulous interview, with a fabulous actor. I had the privilege of meeting her on a set, and she was among the most gracious and kind women I've ever met, that same quality always shining through in her many films. On the casting of her in Exorcist, I believe that she was by far the better choice, although I dearly love Anne Bancroft. I think that Ellen's "softer" persona was far better for the part of the mother as opposed to Bancroft's often more "steely" approach. Can't wait to see the reboot. If it does even HALF the business of the original, it's going to be a blockbuster.
