You can hear the fear in her voice and how much she wants to come out then the relief when she does. It is so hard to watch yet her smile once the audience cheers, is so wonderful. Brave young woman.

A very articulate and moving speech that brought me to tears. I applaud her for taking this brave decision to come out.

I can't believe the comments I'm reading. What's funny is that people are claiming that homosexuality isn't a problem anymore, saying that what she did isn't brave and she only did it for publicity. Meanwhile other comments are talking about how homosexuality is a sin and a mental disorder. Other people are making disgusting jokes about her sexuality, probably because they can't take this seriously. These are all reasons why she needed to make this speech. As long as there are comments like these, we need people that fight for LGBT. As long as there are comments like these we will also need feminism. These things exist for a reason, people. And it's not about being gay. It's about being human, and having the right to live. I'm not gay but some of the things she said meant a lot to me. This isn't about her being gay, it's about knowing that you have just as much right as anyone else to be here.

You can just see at 5:19 that she is willing herself to go through with it and not back out. Bravery is a beautiful thing to see on someone so vulnerable in the moment.

She IS brave! ..and it sickens me to see many of the hate comments below :( Guys, whether you like her sexuality or not, there is no excuse for the discrimination, or anyone to deny she's speaking the truth. Even if she wasn't speaking the truth, she would know, not any of you. Don't make excuses to say "Ohh she's faking it" "She should stop crying, nothing to be brave about" Etc. I feel that only the LGBT community will know what it's like. Society doesn't oppress people for being straight or teach that it's "unnatural" to be heterosexual. You don't "hide in the closet" for loving someone of the opposite sex (meaning, you don't hide FOR that reason. Anyone can keep their feelings about a person secret). I believe everyone should love who they are, but just remember that the pride and all the fuss over equality doesn't come from no where. Gender roles are not needed here. You should never be told to be a certain way because of what body parts you have. Just be yourself. None of you are to judge her.

To the ignorant people: It takes a lot of courage to come out, more than you think it's worth. A person finding their identity is a huge deal, no matter who you are. Just because you can't make a difference doesn't mean she can't. Even with her speech she can motivate others to be themselves. You are ignoring the significant meaning behind being oneself, it impacts a person's whole life. If you ever cared to understand, you'll at least listen instead of speaking such ignorant words. There are still millions of others suffering, just because it worked out in one place doesn't mean other countries in the world are fine.

Two years later, still as powerful as when I first watched it.

One of my school friends came out to me 2 years ago. He texted me that he needed to talk to me about something on Monday, and I spent the whole weekend stressing out about what the hell it was he was gonna tell me. I thought he was gonna reproach me something, that he'd get in a fight with me and I might lose him as a friend. I bet you already guessed what it is he was to tell me... So we were both sitting at a table and he was kinda avoiding the subject, talking in a light-hearted tone as if nothing was going on, but I could tell something was wrong and I was scared. And then, out of the blue, he throws me "I'm gay", as if he was talking to me about the weather. I froze for a sec. At first, I thought it was a joke. When I realized it wasn't, I processed what I just had heard for a sec and sighed. "That's it?", I told him. "That's what you needed to tell me?". "Yes", he answered anxiously, but looking relieved at the same time. And then I told him "God, I am SO RELIEVED". I bet he wasn't expecting an answer like this one. "I thought you were mad at me for some reason, I spent the whole weekend stressing about this conversation". And I was almost mad at him. "Why are you making such a big deal out of it? I fucking don't care whether you're gay or straight, you're my friend!". Yes, that was my reaction. I was relieved. That's how everyone should feel when someone they love comes out to them. Because it means they don't have serious issues. They're not ill. They're not dying. They're not leaving the country forever. They're not announcing bad news. They're just telling you who they really are. And that is the most precious gift someone can ever give you. If they're willing to tell you, it means that they love you and that your support means everything to them. It means they care what you think about them and worry you might not love them anymore when you find out who they really are. No one should ever feel that way. When someone comes out to you, they're just looking for the support and the strength it takes to be themselves in a world full of hateful and intolerant people. If you can't give it to them, if you can't simply say "I love you no matter what and all I want is for you to be happy", then it's you that are sick, not gay people. To all of you who are reading my comment, all of you who are struggling right now and feel helpless, hopeless and worthless, just know that you all are beautiful people, no matter your skin color, your origin, your religion. No matter your gender identity, your sex, your sexual orientation. No matter your size, your weight, no matter how you look or what your voice sounds like. No matter your disabilities and weaknesses. Don't ever let people make you doubt that you deserve to be loved and happy. Don't ever let bullies take your strength and dignity. Don't let anyone ever bring you down. Your happiness belongs to you and to you only, and no one can take that away from you. It's up to you to accept who you are and embrace it. You all have what it takes to stand up for yourselves and be proud of whatever makes you different from others. Your difference is your strength and your beauty. Love yourself and you'll see people will love you too (and if they don't, it's their loss, not yours!).

Why are there so many stupid and ignorant comments saying this like, "Oh wow I could've pounded that so hard.", or, "It's a shame she's a lesbian." Was she ever going to let you fuck her anyways? It makes me so angry how some people didn't grasp the message she was trying to get across, and how that's the initial thought that comes to their minds. Even if she was straight, the fact that she is gay doesn't break the fact that she's an amazing, intelligent human being. Her speech was so moving and authentic. I've loved all of her movies and she's not just an amazing actress, but an amazing person. Well, good on Ellen Page for this. She definitely delivered a great speech. Just a shame that the comments (and associated "thumbs up" on those comments) for this on KZfaq reflect just how petty, ignorant, and intolerant many people still are.

I didn't start crying until about halfway through, because her eloquence and love are so shiny and beautiful. Then it got more personal and I cried more.

Will never forget watching this for the first time just over two years ago as a young little 17 year old. Finally came out to myself on that early morning before school. Remember crying to myself in the shower just after, a moment that changed my life forever really. One of the best moments of my life and I haven't looked back. Still watch this video every once in a while. It gets better.

My dad told me if I ever became a lesbian he'd "step and stop it". He criticises me because I "defend lesbians" and because I "dress like a boy". He thinks that people have to "dress of their gender" because it's "normal" and it's bad to be "different". Now I fear that my sister will not grow up with the resentment of his racism, homophobia, transphobia and arrogance, like I have. I am also confused about my sexuality but I am also afraid.

One of the best speech ever in favor of LGBT in my opinion. IT WOULD BE TRULY EASIER TO LIVE IN A WORLD WERE PEOPLE AREN'T HORRIBLE AND JUDGMENTAL TO EACH OTHER. I identify myself as a bi with a certain propension into boys...I haven't "come out" yet, but I don't really feel like doing it..I mean, I desire a world were homosexuals, bi and lesbian people can answer at "who's your crush?" with "oh, this boy/this girl" with absolute naturality and ease, but yet I still fear doing it. I still perceive a veil of hate towards people who aren't straight, and the bigots who claim not to be homophobes but then always come off with the fucking "but..." are still really strong in my opinion. I lied about my sexuality more than once...more than twice...and nobody truly know who my TRUE crushes were (and are) and even when I had the chance to CORRECTLY answer the crush answer I had internally panic attacks considering to let them truly know and I always answered "nobody" or "this girl" (but the fact that I even have some girl crushes doesn't make me feel like i'm truly lying [ex. I like alot Rihanna's, Beyoncé's and Lana's physiognomy]). But still NOBODY knows that i'm BI, and the flashback of my mother slapping me thrice about 9 years ago, because I was typing on the PC that I loved one of my boy classmates, stops me even more...now I'm about to turn 18 and I don't really know how she feels about it, but I still have another flashback that when I was a little kid, I was in my bed asking my dad if he would've loved me even if I was bi/gay and he said "Yes, of course. How can you even think of your dad not loving you?" Today my biggest crush in on one of my boy classmates (who's taken -.-) but who cares...you know, the "How is it called when your crush likes you back? IMAGINATION" is almost a fact that applies to like 80% and more people of any sex/sexuality so it don't really bothers me.

People are saying who cares, but i think her doing this brings out the courage in other young people to do the same. It's leading by example, showing young and sometimes older people that it's ok to be gay. It's not a disease, it's who you are and nobody should be ashamed of who they are. I was a kid when i watched this video. I was playing Beyond Two souls and searched more about him. This very video, was the first time in my life i saw a queer person in any kind of media that wasn’t in a derogatory way. That changed me forever. Honestly, I just come back every once in a while to rewatch this speech.

She is articulate, and witty, and oh so earnest. In the end, she demonstrates how to make good use of people's kindness to find that strength within to do right by yourself, and then also to help others find the same. What we have witness, people, is a kind of magic. It spreads. The highlight of her speech, personally, is not in the part where she says "I'm gay". It's her entire speech that is so precious. Every word of her rings true. It's like Roger Ebert and Ellen Degeneres said. Be kind. We must be kind to one another. We are only here for a short time. We must be brave, and joyous and kind.

Equality isn't just about lgbt rights. It's about treating each other with respect because we're all human beings. Human rights, not just gay rights. A lot of you are missing the point. I encourage you to re-watch this and really listen to what Ellen is saying. The part that struck me most, as a straight, American female, was this: "If we took just five minutes to recognize each other's beauty instead of attacking each other for our differences.. That's not hard. It's really and easier and better way to live." This world would be a whole lot better if we all made an effort to be less horrible to one another.

So many people are complaining about her getting an applause when she announced she was gay. You guys dont understand that she isnt getting applauded because of the simple fact that shes gay. Shes getting applauded because she finally got the courage to come out. Its hard as a celebrity to come out as being gay, because maybe you wont get movies, youll lose fans, etc. She did this because she thinks more people in the LBGTQ community will have the courage and strength to come out as well. This is an issue though, because this is adding on to the lives we lose every day because of suicide and even murder. People are dying because other people cant accept the fact that others are gay. I went through a similar journey. I came out as lesbian at 19 years old, but even though I knew I was attracted to women, I never felt like I belonged in the lesbian community. It took a few years, but now, on Trans Day of Visibility 2023 that's just passed, at the age of 23, I've finally come out as non-binary/transmasc. It hurts when people say I was brainwashed, why can't I just stay a masculine lesbian, that I'm mentally ill, all the stuff that people also say about him all the time. I've learned that some people will feel entitled to your existence, that somehow if you stop identifying as a lesbian, then suddenly you're doing a disservice to all lesbians. Well I'm not your property, and neither is Elliot. Non binary/trans people aren't a trend. We should celebrate that our understanding of human gender and sexuality is ever-evolving and fluid as we find the words for feelings that people have always felt.

Ellen Page was already a wonderful person in my book, but watching her give this speech brought me to tears, especially the shakiness of her voice as she spoke. People say it doesn't take courage these days to come out, but when I came out it was in a written note in high school to a lesbian friend, when most of my circle was also gay, or bisexual, or supportive, and I still felt like I was going to die doing it. I could never have done this.

I've seen this video multiple times, and everytime the emotion gets over me. Now seeing the title with his chosen name made me cry of happiness. Im so proud, he's so brave.
