Elliot Page says he experienced a mixture of feelings when he came out as transgender on an Instagram post in 2021.
“I felt utterly elated and beyond grateful to finally be in a place where I could accept and love myself and do what I needed to and wanted to,” the 37-year-old actor, director, and LGBTQ+ activist told the audience at the 2024 TIME100 Summit in New York City on Wednesday.
After a soulful live performance by Leslie Odom Jr. and opening remarks from TIME CEO Jessica Sibley, Page sat down with TIME Contributing Editor Sam Lansky to kick off a series of panel discussions featuring the global TIME100 community.
It’s been three years since the actor graced the cover of TIME magazine alongside his pet dog to share-in full for the first time-his journey towards publicly announcing that he is a gender non-binary transgender person.
“That cover, which was shot by a trans man, Wynne Neilly in Toronto, and having that opportunity, it meant so much,” Page said. “It was also very overwhelming, as you can imagine,” he said, adding that he was experiencing trans joy alongside feelings of anxiety, grief and anger.

I do not see sadness, I see fear of none acceptance and a shyness. The idea of exposing yourself to such scrutiny is very brave and scarry at the same time, not far from running into a burning building to save someone...or yourself.

She’s literally in an affirming echo chamber being interviewed by the same trans ally that shot her Time coverstory. But yet, it’s clear she’s not comfortable in her own skin. You cannot mutilate yourself and expect to magically fix years of trauma. She’s also got an eating disorder and depression and anxiety that seems to follow her. Why? Is that cuz of all da hate too? Wait .. that pre-dates her transition. Moral of the story. Accept yourself as God made you.

Gender dysphoria does not disappear after transition, it gets easier, people can live, because without transition trans people generally take their own lives. Based on research it takes usually only bottom surgery to entirely eliminate gender dysphoria, we have been seeing this pattern repeatedly. This is why these people need to transition before pubert, because it increases dysphoria by damaging their body even more due to the wrong phormones flooding in. It has very little to do with happiness per se, it is not some freaking vanity, it is about rooting themselves into their own body, which takes time. This is why transition is a gradual process where the body changes constantly, it takes sometimes 7 years before the real changes can be more evident and have a bigger impact on dysphoria. It is not like one day they take cross sex hormones and next day everything is okay, lol, all of this is a process of integration and healing. When you are sick, you dont change the mind, you change the body that affects the mind.

Your unnessecarily hostile, ignorant and judgemental comment is the crux of what is wrong, and it's nothing wrong with him. It's how he is being treated that's making him miserable. Any person whose hormones are primarily dominated by estrogen and progesterone to suddenly be altered completely to be driven by testosterone- that’s not what this persons natural state is. So it’s going against the body’s nature. That will cause a lot of depression and anxiety and anger etc etc. Page can be free to do it, but hormones have a GIANT affect on everything we are. You can’t just change it and expect to be ok.

But the hospital helps people like me.... to feel better. the world as decided that IF a person's body dyssssmorphiia and dellllusion is tied to g3nder... suddenly it is no longer an illness... but "their truth" .. which doesn't help anyone. there is no difference between me, and a trans.. the only difference is how the world will tell me i am sick, and the other that they are correct. and if you look at statistics it's clear how that doesn't help them at all.

can you provide any source on that? i've been on testosterone for 6+ years and i would say the experience has been massively positive for me. no sudden, mysterious depression, anxiety, or anger, just feeling comfortable in my body, and a bit more acne than i had before. if trans people who take testosterone suddenly got depressed/suddenly changed personalities or whatever, you'd think we'd notice, but since there's such a insanely low regret rate among trans people who transition medically, i've seen about 99% people talking about how much better going on testosterone made them feel (myself included). you're clearly talking out of your ass

@@Yeodoongiiie have you tried doing research into the regret rates among trans people? or any research at all? though how "regret" is defined, and how "transition" is defined varies between studies, the "regret" rate from one amsterdam study including almost 7,000 people over 43 years was less than 1%. how am i not telling the truth? not only do i have direct experience with transition, and have met probably 100s of trans people in my life, but i've also read the research, which again, does not support anything you're saying about testosterone causing depression. what do you think hormones actually do to the body? when a trans person takes hormones, they are essentially going through a second puberty, that's it. people assigned female at birth naturally produce testosterone already, adding more of it isn't some kind of poison, it's a naturally occurring hormone that is present nearly everyone, unless they have some kind of condition that causes them not to produce it. unless that's true of you, you have testosterone and estrogen in your body right now. the point is that you said "hormones have a GIANT affect on everything we are. You can’t just change it and expect to be ok." and i know that isn't true based on my experience, and the experience of the dozens and dozens of trans people i've talked to, been friends with, known, seen talking about their experiences, etc. it's that simple. i take testosterone, and i'm doing just fine.

this is very very true, the kind of clarity and creativity you can access once you accept yourself and begin transitioning is amazing, like a veil lifts. i'm very happy for him :) "how has it been to develop your voice as a writer?" "it's been an absolute joy that i could not have ever imagined before and by that i mean i always dreamed of being able to write a book or what have you, but it just felt impossible. like, sure there could be spurts of some writing but it was-i do definitely think it was transitioning [that allowed me to write], it was the comfort that allowed me the presence, so much of my mind had been occupied by unhealthy toxic thinking and now I had the space where my consciousness was just flowing, and it was so exhilarating just being able to sit down and write. it's now like, absolutely one of my favorite things to do. being able to create in that way-i just think it's similar to an excitement i feel creatively as an actor [...] and it's incredible to see-i mean it makes sense-but what you're able to do when your mind isn't losing so much energy doing all the things i used to do before that was not helpful."
