Elliott Smith
LIVE 7/28/2000
Fuji Rock @ Naeba Ski Resort, Niigata, Japan
When I was working on the documentary "Elliott Smith: Heaven Adores You", many friends and fans were gracious enough to share their keepsakes with us - memories, videos, pictures and etc. During the production, one of Elliott's close friends and collaborators gave us an old VHS tape that had a performance that they had acquired and kept for a keepsake. I had it transferred from VHS tape and digitized for potential inclusion in the Heaven Adores You project, but it never made the final cut. With the blessing of the tape owner I am uploading the full performance here. This seems to be previously unreleased footage. I hope you enjoy it.

@@JonShade-fy2gm Overlooked I think it a better term than underrated. Generally, Elliott was critically acclaimed when people did take the time to rate him. His subject matter made much of his catalogue too inaccessible for most radio stations... So sadly he was overlooked by many. But those who know, know, and within the industry he's a legend. It's painful to see all the far inferior guitarists on the Rolling Stones top 100 guitarists list. He rivals several in the top ten. On acoustic, I think he was one of the most consistently amazing performers. Like he could outplay Neil Young with his feet. Great drummer, great pianist also. Anyway feels like his music has had a small resurgence lately. Is it just me or is he more popular now than at any point since the release of New Moon, or maybe even since Faboth.

@@JunkBondTrader I 1,000 percent agree with your every word. He was incredible, such a unique genius musician and songwriter. I was just listening to King's Crossing today -- one of my all-time favorites of his, and each time it's as fresh as when I first heard it. Just as unbearably beautiful. I fell in love with Elliott in 2000 and I can't even begin to express the impact he's had on my life. Lots and lots of musicians and bands I adore, but aside from George Harrison, no other musician means as much to me.

@@JunkBondTrader "Anyway feels like his music has had a small resurgence lately. Is it just me or is he more popular now than at any point since the release of New Moon, or maybe even since Faboth. " as time goes on more people are finding his music including the younger generation. some of his songs have been in newer and highly popular tv shows (rick and morty, mr robot). and younger popular musicians have mentioned elliott which also introduces him to more people (phoebe bridgers has admitted to basically stalking elliott). i discovered elliott when i was 16 or 17, around 2016, on a music sharing site from someone who probably discovered elliott via rick and morty. i have turned a few people on to his music in turn. his fandom continues to grow to this day. i think anyone who has a deep appreciation and love for all sorts of music and hears about elliott will become a fan. the algorithm on places like youtube and spotify also helps people find music that is new to them. if you're a fan of sufjan stevens or nick drake or phoebe bridgers or whatever. theres chance the algorithm will stick some elliott smith in the autoplay.

Having a good band behind him brings out a different side in Elliott - he looks, and sounds, so assured and confident here. As much as I love how fragile and stripped-back many of his albums are, would have loved one more in this style too. Damn. :(

I'm pretty sure he was not. But he had also played messed up for the majority of his playing life, and was likely more 'in his element' while high. The show people often point to where he's supposedly farked, at Henry Fonda Theatre, is one where he's likely sober. I read that it was much harder for him to sing and 'make his fingers work' when he was clean... There's no in between...
@Jointanatomy

He had to be clean because he was in Japan. Japan is very strict regarding drugs. And i love this vid more than the Beatles ever made me love them.

I'm thinking he had to at least be on Amphetamines and benzos since he was perscribed them. Like someone said it's highly unlikely he was shooting up because Japan is extremely anti-drug. But scripts are different. Heroin would make him a little slower and mellow so I'm thinking maybe he was on dextroamphetamine or some sort of amphetamine here.

This is my favourite of Elliots shows that are available on youtube. People get caught up in his songs being sad or depressing, and forget that he was multifaceted. Look at him smiling, laughing and joking. He wasnt depressive, he just genuinely cared and wanted to express real emotion in his music. He looks great here. Hes truly in his element. Thats the image im going to burn into my brain when i think of him as an artist. ❤

Then you see Scott, the drummer laughing in the next view :p I forget when but I remember once Janet Weiss mangled a backup vocal during a song and Elliott couldn't help but laugh it off. I mean, Elliott could empathize with making mistakes live haha. He's always making facial expressions live, like wincing when he misses a note... furrowing his brow when someone yells "Free bird", rolling his eyes at dumb interview questions. What a perfect way to spend a Saturday morning... Watching Elliott and Co rip through some cool songs. Wish I hadn't been so young when he was still alive. It's hard feeling so close to him and knowing I'll never be able to shake his hand and thank him for saving my life through his music. But I digress... Lol. What a great show

Thanks so much for sharing this, Kevin. I wish Elliott were still with us today and that his death had been properly investigated. There are no words to express the deep sorrow I feel about this grave injustice. He gave so much of himself through his music and helped so many to live. "Heaven adores you" helps to keep his memory and music alive. I feel deep sympathy for all who loved him, his mother and father, and all those whose lives he touched. Such genuinely compassionate souls deserve eternal remembrance. Kind regards.

廃盤に?マジか。。。

I love that sign at the front of the audience that says "WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE". Elliott Smith was one of a kind and a true musician who knew exactly what sound he wanted to make and knew what type of musicians he needed to surround himself with. The bass player is great and helps reproduce the sound of Elliott's music in studio form with his backing vocals. The keyboard player is amazing especially on songs like Son of Sam and Everything Means Nothing To Me. And the drummer is very inventive and knew how to compliment the rest of the instruments while still keeping it simple. Then, there's Elliott who even 20 years after his death has never ceased to amaze.
