If you didn't know: The 2 points that the dots line up to are called the foci (foe seye). To explain what these are: first get a piece of paper, a piece of string (not closed), and pin down the ends of the string. Now, take a pen and draw with the string. Keep the string tight while you circle the 2 pins. the pins are the foci. foci tend to very poetic in math, and very useful in it too. if you want to hear a poetic thing with foci: lets define a smooth ride on a wheel. its where any point that we choose stays at the same height when any given wheel is on it's "perfect" road. the perfect road is the road for which a "smooth ride" is accomplished for any given point stays on the same height. If we were to get an ellipse and choose one of it's foci as this axel, the perfect road is a sine wave! (the up and down movement of a point moving on a circle)
