Damon had the right idea. Don't use the cure for the sire bond, break the sire bond. Don't use the cure to get her emotions back, flip her switch. When Damon actually gives her the cure, it's the right time to give her the cure. That's the only time she's truly able to make an honest choice for herself. When she's not sired, when she's not without her humanity, and certainly not when she's obsessed with Katherine.

Honestly the way Elena is with her humanity switch slowly turning on is very similar to how Damon was with his humanity switch turning on- the way he was in season 1-2, pretending he doesn’t care about people to focus on revenge. They are both very similar in struggling with keeping their emotions in check because they feel too deeply and can’t handle it. Stefan and Caroline are very good at controlling their emotions (but Stefan not good at bloodlust the way Elena and Damon are)
